He's so indulgent, excellent reviews and no bullshit, probably the no 1 guitar reviewer in my opinion. For professional guitarists its a blessing to learn about gear in detail here.
Ive always loved PRS since i first bought their first gen Santana SE many many years ago. Open chords are just so full and warm and I just love the hell out of it.
This guitar is £1,849 in the UK, which although half the price of the core model is still a lot of money, so I believe they should be able to offer a case at this kind of money, other companies do. An SE comes in a gig bag, a USA made guitar should come with a case. I agree that it should have locking tuners.
I'd probably feel more comfortable using the S2 over the core. The only couple of really nice guitars in my collection (CS LP and a EBMM Luke 3 ball family reserve) , I hardly play because I'm to afraid to ding them. Each time I crossed the 1500$ price point I ended up essentially buying man cave wall decoration.
Phil, you did something different in this demo. It was subtle. But, you held a note to allow it to sustain. To my ears, sustain is one of the points that differentiates guitars. Tacking on OD, distortion and adding a little EQ basically makes every guitar sounds exactly the same. Whereas, the length of sustain tells me the how well the pickups are representing the wood and the quality of the guitar's construction. If you don't mind, when you do guitar demos to add a spot like you did on this one that allows us to hear the note resonate. Allow the note to extend naturally without vibrato or effect. Even if the guitar does not resonate as well as this PRS, it helps as it will distinguish the differences between the guitars. Then, you can let it loose with all the wild sounds. :) Great job, Phil. Always love your perspectives. It sounds like you put a lot of preparation into making every video and it shows!
Definitely not that UGLY brown. I mean if you like brown then I guess that would be a great example. LOL. For me the Scarlet Red or Whale Blue. The Antique White isn't bad either.
I just ordered mine in the faded blue smoke burst and I can’t wait. I’m a little nervous to see how it looks because some pictures show it very blue and some just look grey and black
Great video Phil! I agree I dont really see why they got rid of the locking tuners. They even got rid of them on the core line of Mccarty models. It just seems like such a step backwards.
I have one of these coming in the mail. Should be here next week. I had Sweetwater replace the tuners with metal, locking tuners. Looking forward to it.
Just got the thin line version of this one in a few days ago from Sweetwater. Phenomenal guitar! S2s are, for me, THE way to go when buying a PRS. However...that new Hollowbody SE might have to be an exception. I was a little concerned about the tuning keys as well, but they are fantastic to use.
Great review, I am leaning towards this 594 over the thinline and singlecut just for the larger neck, agree a 3 way shootout with the core and a standard Gibson would be great.
I have a 594 core, Les Paul Standard and Les Paul DC. Tonally it simply isn’t a Les Paul and it’s not even close so If you want that Les Paul tone this guitar isn’t it.. It IS however very close to a Les Paul DC in tone.
Your reviews have really matured ...like you are relaxed and happy. I want to point that out. Again I have been watching a while and love learning. Thank you!!
Great Phil vid. I missed this one though seen most. I have this exact guitar. Love it. Yes core has even more clarity on pickup up but I play on tiny ampscin tiny pubs. The slight difference wouldn't show. Terrific guitar. Yes I have vintage famous guitars but this PRS is equal or better
Since we are at that price point, I think it would be interesting to see a comparison to an Ibanez Prestige. They range from around $999-$1999 (used/new) so a similar price point. They are built in Japan and generally don’t have lots of compromises. The Ibanez in the next price bracket are probably closer to the upper price PRS (sans private stock, but I’m sure Ibanez super duper custom is the same), but they aren’t that common and just waaaay above my breaking point for spending on a guitar.
Had an RG652 ash body prestige. I don’t think there is a higher quality guitar. From the case to the pots to the binding on the headstock. But it was definitely more for metal. Didn’t have the roar I prefer from my les Paul. They even sounded very different when played unplugged.
I just bought a used black 594 Thinline, it’s currently in transit. I really like the tuners, but hate the birds. Dots and it would be the perfect S2 aesthetically. Probably needs a pickup/electronics upgrade, but that’s easy enough to do and you can probably recoup a good portion of that cost by selling the S2 stuff to an SE owner looking to upgrade.
This how I know I am watching too many guitar videos: I have never weighed a guitar. Ever. Not in 35 years of playing. I have never even picked up a PRS...and I KNEW he was going to say 7lbs. Just by the look of him handling it.
Sorry I can only give one thumbs up. It is a wonderful looking and sounding guitar. Paul Reid Smith does know how to make them. Price point is good even in Canada.
I purchased the Thinline version of this guitar, and it's a great guitar for the money! I heard some dissing on the 58/15 S pickups before I got it, but they are good humbuckers! I don't really use the coil split option on this guitar, but it's nice to have it.
@DigtBrain2 Keep an eye on Sweetwater. They get the 'factory Bs' from PRS intermittently. I got a thin line a few days ago that has barely visible pick scratches for a $150 off. You have to be quick and check it often though.
DigtBrain2 when I bought my Silver Sky new last year I was told it was going to be six months and then I got it within two weeks. I’ll hope for the best for you in getting that thin line ASAP!
Nicholas McNeil I’m not surprised. I think (heavy emphasis on that word) that PRS makes it a point to under promise and then they’re more likely to over deliver. Additionally, the better the dealer you order from, the better the likelihood you’ll get it in good time.
Love it Phill! Are you planning to review some another Tagimas or more obscure brands this year? And if it is a yes what kind of brands you have your eye on?
I’m with you on why would they not just put the S2 locking tuners on it. Worst part is you can’t with out even if you wanted to. Great review Phil. Can’t wait for the side by side with the core! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This is such a good and all-encompassing review that I actually want that guitar, even though I haven't thought about it before, and I'm planning on buying another guitar. And yet, I covet this one.
Sounds really nice! Been eyeing the single-cut because I like that Les Paul body shape. Prices on some guitars just blow me away man! Everyone loves a great sounding & playing instrument but some of those prices are just ridiculous!
the core 594 McCarty has the same tuners for 2020. So if it is cost cutting they are doing it on the core also. however the phase 3 will drop right in on these.
While I was researching, PRS had confirmed that the S2 pickups are better quality than the SE pickups however they’re both made overseas. The S2, while built in USA, has all electronics from abroad.. Doesn’t make it bad… but buyers should know. It’s nowhere mentioned in their catalogue therefore one has to assume they prefer you don’t know.
This new model got my attention for sure. I think I can get the single cut version and sell my SE Zac Meyer and my LP studio and not miss a beat. Thanks for the review!
Great video, Phil, as always. Nice S2 595. Sounds great. Too late for me on the comparison, I just recently purchased a core PRS. I love it. They are great guitars.
Great review. Would love to see a video about your amp rack setup. I need to do something similar and not even sure where to start. Are they all plugged into power all the time? Do you use an amp switcher?
Dear Philip, love your channel and I making you guilty of me getting that guitar as well as getting my wife to give me CE 24 for my Birthday…. LOL I was always a Gibson (Les Paul) and Fender strat, and now I’ve got all the world… It was probably very silly of me because I’m maybe 1% of you as a guitar player… Anyway, you’re getting the blame… lol. No regrets though… The guitars are lots of fun… And yes, you’re guilty of me purchasing Hughes and Kettner head amp. Love it, even my wife does (the look especially) By the way she is an amazing Grand piano player so you can imagine how annoying I can get when she’s playing Chopin and I spoil it with my guitar playing…
Same price you can get a Sweetwater exclusive Fender American Professional Strat with a roasted maple neck, locking tuners, limited finish option, and custom shop 69 pickups, and a nice hard case
Smart ploy for the likes. I am thinking that alot of people want to see the A/B test. Imo they sound quite different; especially on the treble side. Also, would like to know this vs. Paul's Guitar SE with the SE TCI pups. I have the 408 but just love the new releases.
Great review. I liked the sound before the TS was added. I think the guitar and amp had plenty of mids and didn't need a TS. Also, of course in single coil mode it didn't sound like a Stratocaster. It has a shorter scale length than a Stratocaster. But it was good to point this out. If I want a Stratocaster sound I'll play my Stratocaster, with the added bonus of a whammy bar.☺🎸🦄
Not that my sample size is exactly huge but every person I know who’s gotten a 594 in any form has at least liked it, most love it. I’d like to get one in Blood Orange.
been looking at a wolf prs style guitar, great quality build $400. also the harley benton prs style $200 ! With some mods it would play as well as a prs at less than 1/2 the price! unless your collecting, expensive guitars are a thing of the past.( Imo.)
Nice guitar! Sounds great and looks beautiful! Not a fan of the tuners either but they work. Love your amp shelving setup! I'm gonna have to look into that at my house! Another project right?! I have one PRS due to curiosity. I bought a used but mint older Korean made Chris Robertson model a while back and I have to say it's a nice guitar. The pickups, to me, are it's weakest point but not bad at all. My older USA Peaveys and older MIJ strats still get more attention but I like it enough to keep it. Great vid! Enjoyed!
I was looking at a McCarty, but I don't care to spend $3800 even though I could swing it. There are just so many other things I would rather spend that money on. The price on these is much more appealing.
So many companies make amazing guitars at this price range, I don't understand why PRS wants to remind us of all the things we're not getting. No case, no locking tuners, cheap inlays (preference)... I mean, c'mon, they couldn't even throw in the real 85/15 pickups??? Maybe I'm just being unfair and unrealistic though. Thanks so much for the review!
Matt i don’t think it’s worth more than 1500$ when you can get a schecter for 1200$ that’s gives you more guitar for your money like the sls elite or apocalypse from schecter
I was close to buying an S2 594. It plays like a dream and the quality is definitely there, but the pickups just weren't there. Didn't care for them at all in comparison. Played one and a Core back to back. That was my first mistake. How hard to just get a set the core 594 pickups for it I wonder?
Hello. Have you heard of any issues with the brass thumbwheel studs holding the 2 piece bridge on the s2 594 thinline ? Specifically both the brass thumbwheel studs bending towards the nut resulting in the bridge not being parallel to the body ? I have an new s2 594 thinline. Seem to be getting a little run around from the dealer on getting this taken care of.
Great Review PHIL. Have 2 PRS models and can’t say a bad thing about them. Your amp rack is very interesting. Is that a bought system, or did you fabricate it. That system would really suit my gear. Thank you.
Please let your buddy Paul know that maybe a "Junior" S2 McCarty series is in order. Locking tuners, stop tail bridge and no neck binding. Could do the Junior and Junior Deluxe. Same bodies, necks, same electronics and pickups. Maybe some more colors on the Thinline Junior version?
Been a Gibson Les Paul player for the longest but these S2 594 McCarthy guitar is making me change my mind. So debating between the 594 Phill is playing or the SE The Pauls Guitar
I had a nice codura gig bag from years ago. I used to hang it on the coat racks in the dressing rooms on gigs. Very handy. Much better than a case as far as keeping your instrument away from idiot drunks. When flying the stewardesses would put it in the first class coat rack and keep it safe. I loved that as it kept !ssh0les from trying to jam items in in the neck.
These should have something like the double tap system Fender does. Those sound just like single could when tapped. That's the only weakness though! But what about tuning stability?
The PRS web says the "S" pups are "sourced" to their spec. Half the reason I wanted a 594 in the first place was the 58-15 LT pickups! I would upgrade tuners as well. Even at 1/2 price, $1700 is still a lot of money, about what I paid for my LesPaul Classic!
'S' Pups are not made in house by PRS and the same Pup's you would find in SE's - that's part of the cost cutting. I love my 594 and have the 58/15 LT's in both that and my Hollowbody ii and they are glorious!! Being an S2 though means its been made by PRSwith the same care and attention to detail as a Core or CE. The woods are all treated the same and cured the same way. Using half the thickness of Maple and because of the different carve, that cuts out a LOT of the cost because the shape is easier for all the hand sanding and finishing. I think the S2's are great at the price and very competitive with other guitars.
@@BAMozzy69 Thanks for the info! I'm a little older than Paul (I'm 68) and I've followed PRS from the start. I never really wanted one till the 594. I did buy a 'Bernie Marsden' SE (Beast clone?) and I like that a lot after I installed some Duncan/Bonamassa 59' pups I had. That $4k for a 594 is tough! I may just sell 4-5 and bite the bullet and do it! 8) Thanks... --gary
I assume the tuners can be replaced easy enough if you can find ones with the same footprint. I'm looking at getting a thinline myself because I prefer the toggle to be down by the knobs and I'm not into fancy tops.

@@stratmagic6893 Yup, I do play my guitars, I play them a lot, but sometimes I buy the wrong ones.
That is too true. An S2 594 single cut is my next and last. They are amazing guitars. I was very impressed when I tried one out.
YES THANK YOU FOR THIS REVIEW. BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG AND THERES NO S2 594 CONTENT 🙏😭🙏
THX Phil. This was a great video and greatly expected too. I'm not going to hide that i'd love to see the A / B comparison with the core 594. So i 👍!

I have an S2 standard and it rarely goes out of tune. Locking tuners can always be added. Cheers!
Sweet guitar. Was planning on ordering one soon. Thanks Phil for another great review.
its a beautiful guitar with a great sound . Thanks for a clear and good description of this guitar
I know there’s so much to your videos, but I really love your playing Phil! You’re honestly one of my favorite creators on here.
Sounds amazing with the tube screamer
new studio set up looks great
Comparison with your LP lite would be perfect. Same style, thickness, price. Betting the 57 pickups would be better
Love the new look for the office/studio
The S2 Single-cut 594 will be my next guitar. I just need to figure out what finish I like the best. Thinking the blue is standing out right now.
Definitely not that UGLY brown. I mean if you like brown then I guess that would be a great example. LOL. For me the Scarlet Red or Whale Blue. The Antique White isn't bad either.
dpdockery mccarty sunburst
@@bluesthing7490 I have the scarlett red and it is great. Neck is bigger than all my other guitars but I like it.

Great video Phil! I agree I dont really see why they got rid of the locking tuners. They even got rid of them on the core line of Mccarty models. It just seems like such a step backwards.
PRS have stated that they want to take the McCarty line back to a more vintage spec.
Pennies become Washingtons, Washingtons become Lincolns, Lincolns become Jacksons and Jacksons become Franklins. They are saving money.

Phil do you know if this would fit in a formed Stratocaster case? Thanks - great presentations!!
Would love to see the A/B. I think the S2 is the best value.
What color is that. Really thinking of buying one of these and I love the color of yours.
Such cool riffs! You sound like Truckfighters 🤟🏼
Why Kluson-type tuners and not locking? Isn't that part of what makes it a McCarty?
