Sweetwater gets no more of my $$. Bought an Ibanez Premier $1500 guitar from them, and it showed up with a tone knob that just wobbled all around. Yep, the 55 point inspection card was filled out, but somebody didn't do their job. For now on, I want a guitar in my hands before I make a purchase. I am thinking about this SE McCarty.
I have to say this is my first PRS. My Daughter bought this for my Birthday and I’m in love. I’m a Strat player and the feel of this guitar is fantastic and sounds great as well. Love the slinky feel. 😎👍
Man I tell you, out of all the prs in this piece range this one connected to me in an unknown almost celestial kind of way. Hard to explain , and I've seen tons of videos but this model is exactly me. Already ordered it.

@@emj9927 The double cut I tested sounded better, but they're the same. Loved the sound, my only gripe was the sticky neck, but I think would smooth down with use.
2:40 I believe the scale length is attributed to later measurements of some of the early LPs that turned out to be 24.594" rather than the advertised 24.75" spec due to manufacturing tolerances of that era. Great demo, Darrell!
Just bought this at a Sam Ash store closing. I played this guitar for 8 straight hours and could not find a bad note or anything wrong with this whatsoever!! This guitar just sounds rich and full and has tele and strat tones as well as Les Paul joy. The pickups are coil tapped and make playing clean passages perfect. Easy knob layout and just use your ears. This guitar could cover a full gig night without a back up. Just perfect. Easy to set the string action and neck playability. The bridge and tailpiece is amazing hardware!! Never have I been happy with any guitar out of the box as I have with this sweet sweet guitar!!!! It came with tens, they played easy but I am a .009-.042 guy. It was easy to replace the strings and intonate. A little nut filing to get the right string height over the first fret with no buzz and the rest of the neck becomes a dream to navigate. It is so clear acoustically that when you plug it in, you discover it’s loud strident tones that can be dialed off with a very usable tone cap/ pot set up…. It is the guitar you can afford and love and just play. Best damn thing to happen to me in guitars for quite awhile. You will not regret buying one. Perfect!!!
Im waiting for the DGT SE review from you, if they ever arrive in Canada! So far the DGT has been reviewed as more consistent quality from the McCarty SE.
Beautiful guitars can be had at the $1000 range and this is one of them! This 594 looks like a $2-$3G guitar! Under 8 lbs and the contours are awesome attributes! Thanks for showcasing this fine instrument Darrell B Guitar!
I am in the works of saving up for this guitar right now. Keep the vibes high and remember to do something today that you can thank yourself for tomorrow!
I like the way PRS does their guitars…everything that touches the string is brass…tailpiece to bridge saddles to tuners…Mr. Smith says it makes a difference!!!
I love that guitar, I've been torn about what to get and this keeps coming out as the front runner based on sound, looks, electronics and price. I think PRS nailed it!
Yep. That's my next electric girlfriend. There is no doubt about it. The SE line has made a believer out of me. I have two custom 24s and a 22. Love all 3. The pickups are very consistent and balanced. PRS do an exceptional job on these student edition instruments.
I've been a life long Les Paul player, but I just ordered the double-cut version in Charcoal Grey. It'll be my first PRS and I'm really excited for it to arrive. I hope it's half as good as I've heard it is.
I pre-ordered my SE DGT Goldtop and it's phenomenal... closest to my cores yet but had NO IDEA they were going to release these. Almost bought the S2 last year but really wanting that exactly model you are playing but regrettably have to wait :( great playing, great review!
Love that intro! instead of November Rain its September Shower by Cannons N Daises. Really need to find a guitar store that has some of these PRS SE guitars in stock. Every video I see of these makes them seem really good for the price. Thanks Darrel for another great video!
Have over a dozen electrics from Fender to Gibson, DeAngelico, Sire, Epiphone and of course, PRS. My favorite of the bunch is the PRS Starla made in Indonesia. Like it much more than my S2 Custom 24. PRS must have found a bag of magic dust somewhere, because these new SE models, especially the pickups, are pure magic.
I have a Fender Telecaster FMT HH that seems to have similar specs and also has split coils and real Seymour Duncans. Give one a try-and they’re still in the Fender catalog.
@@tomneil6830 Actually have one. Like the tones, but prefer the wide thick necks like the Starla and Gibson LP Studios. I just like the Starla a bit more than the Studios.
I bought one of these in the burst finish. I haven’t had other SE’s so I cannot comment on if it is the best SE. However mine had a quality issue that I’ve not experienced before on even cheaper guitars. It got returned. Picked up the S2 594 instead and no issues, just like my other S2.

It is very impressive. I had one of the single cut Korean models that came with a 24 3/4 scale and played it for 2 years. I happened on an estate sale where the poor guy passed before playing a Gibson Std. Ltd. Ed. he had ordered. Even the case was in a plastic bag in mint. I got it for a third of it's current value. I really was sure I would flip it. Best sounding guitar I ever owned and I owned a late 50's Lp Custom and a late 50's Special with soap bars I bought in the late 60's. That said if I didn't have the Gibson I might well go back to the PRS I just heard today :-) Thanx for the demo.
just got a fredrik akkeson used and i am now a prs fanboy. most sustain of all my guitars and also some of the darkest ebony and smoothest tuners i have seen.
I agree. It is the one with the stop tail piece with the adjustable brass saddles similar to the one you demoed and the same flame maple veneer over a maple cap. Similarly, it has perfect frets and outstanding quality control and setup from the factory. I bought it after looking at, no exaggeration, 7 telecasters which all had serious defects from the factory. I decided not to give Fender my money after seeing the SE 245 vintage sunburst for less money with a gig bag.
@@DarrellBraunGuitar The 245 is a rock machine, I got one and a McCarty 594. My 594 has some issues, just fades out on either pick up then just fades back in. Like the way it plays, guess I gotta get it back to Sweetwater for some work.
What I’ve always loved about the 594 is how it hardens back to a classic Les Paul spec that seems to go under the radar a lot. So the story goes Ted McCarty, who became a mentor of sorts to Paul Reed Smith, told him that those now legendary burst Les Pauls actually had a scale length of 24.594 inches rather than the 24.75 we know today, and that inspired this version of the McCarty model. I’d love another 594. I had a core Hollowbody II version which was a beautiful guitar, played and sounded amazing, but it helped me realise that true hollowbodies aren’t for me, so I’d love a core solid version someday. The 58/15LT pickups are my all time favourite at the moment. They were in the Hollowbody and are in my Special Semi Hollow too, and they are so dynamic and responsive, not to mention clear and defined. Every PRS I’ve ever played or been lucky enough to own is right up there with the best I’ve ever played. They absolutely live up to their reputation.
I haven't seen the 58/15 LT S pickups mentioned much in reviews - they're standard on both the 2023 S2 and SE McCarty 594s, as well as the 2023 SE Hollowbodies. It sounds like a significant improvement. It actually didn't register with me until I reread the comment section on Phil McKnight's review of the 2023 SE McCarty 594. And many of the retailer websites are misleading, stating the 2023s have the old 58/15 S pickups, while some say they have 2022s with the new 58/15 LT S pickups. The only site I've seen accurately identify them is The Guitar Store a bit across the Puget Sound from Seattle.
Gotta say I love my se 594 McCarty, I’m a fender tele player , have a couple other fenders, have been looking at a couple Gibson Les Paul and epiphone Les Paul, went to guitar center and played a bunch of them, then tried the 594 se , s2 and core, for my purposes the se was my favorite choice, ,was there a difference ? Probably so but not enough to justify a $2500 plus dollar difference, , so sweetwater it was for the se single cut , and honestly I took a shot by not having it setup, out of the box the guitar was set up perfectly for me, fret edges action every aspect was amazing, PRS got it right, Gibson is a great guitar, but look out PRs got you on this one
Doing some research on a McCarty 594. Everyone seems to really like it. I think I will pull the trigger on the mahogany single cut in cherry red. They are offering a free Plek service from Sweetwater on this model. Thanks for the review.
I’m sure it’s great, it looks and sounds great. I have a core version, and after 40 years of playing guitar on many, many guitars - I believe it’s the best guitar made.
PRS might change the neck paint to satin already. I have been in Long McQuade today and played the year 2023 SE 594, it has a satin finish neck now, and the body is still gloss, really really smooth play feeling.
I have both. They are both really excellent guitars. 2 totally different neck profiles. The Epi Modern is nice slim taper and feels great with the ebony fretboard. Nice and smooth playability. I modded the Epi with Dimarzio 36th Anniversary Pafs. The neck on the 594 is quite a bit chunkier but not too Chunky. Feels just about right to me. I have smaller hands but the 594s neck is a great fit. Fit finish and playability is spectacular. I'm not a huge fan of coil splitting but they both are capable of splitting. I am definitely keeping both. The Prs is about $300 more here in Canada. And the prs comes with the SE gigbag and the Modern doesn't include a case. With the pickups and a case for Epi the cost balances out. Either guitar would be an excellent addition to your family
Thank you Darrell, that guitar is beautiful and the price is more in line with my budget. I just bought a PRS Silver Sky and love it but the McCarty is different and unique so time to spend more money and add this beauty to my collection. Thanks for the excellent review and presentation of the McCarty. Damn I wish I could play was well as you, I'm an infant in guitar skills next to you. 😔
I wish they'd do the singlecut for lefties. At least they did add a couple new colors for the doublecut SE. At first all I could find was black/goldburst and faded blue. I'd LOVE to get my hands on the trampas green one because I instantly loved that color. Eriza Verde looks close but more lime like. Vintage sunburst looks AWESOME though and I love that the headstock matches on that one.
I just traded my PRs Se dgt for the Se McCarty 594. The dgt was a gorgeous guitar but I found the pickups a little too bright and biting for me. Dug the 594 a little more
Nice review Darrell, and hands down the best PRS I have ever heard bar none! A major buying factor for me is the neck, it would have been great to have had some information about the neck profile and radius in the review but I don’t think you mentioned these?
If you’ve never been to Sweetwater, here’s what to expect. You pull up, and see the clouds part, the sun bean shine down and hear the “ ahhh haaaa” !! The place is huge!!! It’s a two story mall, full of demo rooms, restaurants, gear, two concert venues, a recording studio!!! I’m buying an Rv and retiring in their parking lot!
Finally found a PRS I like the looks of. Grabbed a vintage cherry standard version of this guitar. At 7lbs 12ozs its much lighter than my LesPauls. Theres great deals to be had on them right now.
I recently had a 2021 Mccarty S2 and thought the pick ups sucked. Didn't really bond with it so I sold it. I feel the SE line is just as nicely built and look better in my opinion. Hated the beveled look on the S2. May go for one of these instead.
Darrell...any recommendations for a jazz guitar semi-hollow with center block for beginners... Would really appreciate your input. Much blessings 🙌 and keep on rocking. Ty 🎸🎸🎸👍
My PRS SE245, which is the forerunner of the McCarty, is the best electric guitar I own. Better neck and frets than a Les Paul. Outstanding playability.
From what I read the correct scale length for Les Paul's or Gibson was 24 5/8. It was the method used to figure out fret spacing. I guess Gibson used Rule of 18.
Is it a maple cap with a veneer, or is it a maple veneer laying on top of the mahogany body? I've asked around and haven't gotten a straight answer. I think that after 5 months someone might have an answer for this question.
Hi Darell, any way we could get a comparison between the SE Paul’s guitar and the McCarty SE? I am quite thorn which one to pick up. For those of you in the same situation, which would you pick? Both seem to be quite the value for money!
I bought a Custom 22 Semi Hollow SE back '18 . When I picked up that guitar I was like wow! This is perfect! I bought it with no regrets! I've wanted a Les Paul Standard, but price is scaring me off. Then looked at 594 McCarty core, too expensive, with these SE lines I may consider it.
Love the looks and playability if the SE line. My only complaint is that i dont like the pickups. My SE had the 58/15s and they were better than my older SE pickups but still had something about them i didnt loke at all. Swapped them out because i loved the guitar so much. This one is gorgeous 😊
Holy cow, i just received mine today and it cost $759 plus tax. They dropped the price by $190 according to Sweetwater website. My first PRS and I'm so incredibly pleasantly not surprised at the quality, tone, fit and finish, and I absolutely love this neck profile! It's fat and wide, just like my...garbage cans. Seriously though, third guitar has killer tones and looks amazing. For $759 is a no brainer... Which is good for me. Then you for posting ask these guitar reviews Darrell:)
I’m left handed so it took me a while to get my hands on one. I’ve heard many people say they sound weak. I found a lefty in a music store and sat with it quite a while. I wanted so bad to like it, there were things about it I did like. But, in the end I had to agree the sound was weak.
Hello! Love your reviews…question, in your opinion, how does the SE 594 and SE Paul’s guitar compare to the SE DGT? Love the pickups in the DGT. Would like to see prs talk Mr Grissom into a 594 Singlecut with wrap around tailpiece and DGT pickups…hardtail! Yeah baby, yeah! Lol
HUGE thanks to Sweetwater for partnering with me for this video!

I'm liking PRS SE's. Another option in my arsenal.
My SE 594 weighs 6lb 11oz. I got it at Sweetwater and find the light weight very resonant and unplugged it rings out as well.
Awesome video, as always! Will be waiting on your SE DGT review though 👀❤️
PRS might change the neck paint to satin already. I have been in Long McQuade today and played the year 2023 SE 594, it has a satin finish neck now, and the body is still gloss, really really smooth play feeling.
I think a shootout between this and an Epiphone Les Paul Modern would be epic.
I just got the exact one you are playing. It is so freaking cool!
I have this exact guitar. It’s extremely easy to play. And it’s light….my fender strat weighs more. The neck is a little thick but I’ve adjusted.
I think I'll defo be getting one of these badboys asap.
I like PRS guitars. That's why I own one. 🎸🎸🎸
Nice to have this test !
We still don't have it in Europe, but I'll definitely test it... Buy it ?
I just traded my PRs Se dgt for the Se McCarty 594. The dgt was a gorgeous guitar but I found the pickups a little too bright and biting for me. Dug the 594 a little more
I’d like to see a comparison on a core 594 versus the SE
Great playin, great demo!
Great Guitars ! Thanks Darrell !
I just bought this guitar double horn and I am in love
Thanks, you did me in. I have a red Single Cut coming next week
I just ordered the 594 Double Cutaway model.
Just bought one from Zzounds on its way, your video helped me make a decision thank you
Darrell...any recommendations for a jazz guitar semi-hollow with center block for beginners...
Would really appreciate your input.
Much blessings 🙌 and keep on rocking.
Ty
🎸🎸🎸👍
Darrell do you prefer the single cut as opposed to the regular se because it's more similar to the Les Paul's you like so much?
My PRS SE245, which is the forerunner of the McCarty, is the best electric guitar I own. Better neck and frets than a Les Paul. Outstanding playability.
From what I read the correct scale length for Les Paul's or Gibson was 24 5/8. It was the method used to figure out fret spacing. I guess Gibson used Rule of 18.
Is it a maple cap with a veneer, or is it a maple veneer laying on top of the mahogany body? I've asked around and haven't gotten a straight answer. I think that after 5 months someone might have an answer for this question.
Was sent here by one of your personal friends the shaw internet guy 👍 AB
I want one (the SE standard in tobacco). It’s the first PRS, and the first "LP style" I have ever lusted after.
I changed mine with lollar eldorado, and it sound perfectly rather it full humbucker and amazing split coil.
My SE DGT arrives MOnday, I hope it's as nice as yours!
I’m left handed so it took me a while to get my hands on one. I’ve heard many people say they sound weak. I found a lefty in a music store and sat with it quite a while. I wanted so bad to like it, there were things about it I did like. But, in the end I had to agree the sound was weak.
Is that guitar ever beautiful. The guy doing the video sure is happy.
10's or 9's for the strings? Beautiful guitar...
Love the intro solo ❤
I had a lot of guitars, expensive and cheap ones. But this guitar is sobeautifuk and good sounding. I need one like this.
Scale length seems key. The harmonic structure seems shifted. Sg meets a strat sound? Pick ups also sound a bit hot.
Hey Darrell..great video there. Could you make a comparison between this PRS and the Schecter Custom II Solo?
Lol
