  • Here is a play along on the new RCI Starlite kit. The audio is from Baton Rouge Feb 28 1975. This is a good version, despite Rob's voice being pretty rough. The solo sections are taken at a very brisk clip!
    About the kit:
    26x14, 14x10 (12 lugs),16x16, 18x16 RCI Starlite Super Duty acrylic shells, with Ludwig classic lugs, mounts, claws and t-rods, repro pointy badges, vintage Ludwig rail mount. Snare is a mid 70's 6.5x14 Ludwig 402 Supraphonic.
    RCI has been making high quality acrylic shells for nearly 20 years. RCI Super Duty shells are made in America. They feature a welded (not glued) seam, 45 degree glass cut edges, and are scratch and impact resistant. They are very resonant and feature exceptional projection and tone.
    Check out their website here for more info. www.rcistarlite...
    Thanks to Romano at RCI for making this dream kit a reality!! 🙏🏼❤️

    Wow George you really captured Bonham in this live version. Bonham really added some marvellous little changes to this song, showing just how good he was as a drummer. Dont think anyone except you George couldve pulled this off. Awesome job. Bonham was one of a kind for sure.

    The live 1975 performance on Zeps DVD was awesome. I remember hearing Bonham nailing those floor toms towards the end of this song and my old stereo speakers bottoming out the bass on the 18 floor tom.

    This is my favorite LZ song. Always has been. Your snare stand looks like it could topple over at anytime. I love that fact Bonham had two crashes, and one ride. That's it, nothing more.... (well, until later). Also, how effing strong does that cymbal lug on the kick drum have to be in order to hold a huge 24" ride that is getting beat to death!!??

    What do I know, right? I’m just a bass hack. I do know that I’ve listened to Dallas 3-4-75 version of this tune possibly over 500 times since its release in 1990. With all the other N. American soundboard tapes that have leaked since then, I’ve heard them all…and your kit here sounds very similar to John’s actual one. These Vista’s have a “tubby” sound about them. You seemed to have em tuned good n tight, again like John did em. Hey I loved watching this video George. Excellent job I have to say. What live version were you going to here? I thought it was an EC version but I think I hear a U.S. version here.

  • @DaveClark-ib6sp
    @DaveClark-ib6sp 4 месяца назад

    Do you guys actually think this kit is tuned to Bonham's? It sounds nothing like Bonham's. Do yourself a favor. There is a drum kit mic kit with only 3 mic's. It has 2 overheads to pick up the whole kit AND the room along with one on the floor for the kick. That will give you a true Bonzo sound once the kit is tuned correctly. Bonham only used Vistalites because Ludwig paid him to. It was in his promo contract. If it were up to him, he would have never come within 10 feet of those plexyglass drums. Nothing sounds like his maple green sparkle. That's why he used them as his main studio recording kit. Listen to the Bonham outtakes on RUclips, that's what BONHAM sounds like. I had 1 of 100 Ronn Dunnett Bonham Ludwig stainless steel reissues. That's what he sounds like tuned properly. Never use close mic's to capute a Bonham's sound in a room. Every room is diffrent so that 3 mic package will work in every room if and only if the drums are tuned properly. Start there and master that because no matter how much you play you'll never sound like Le Bête on a kit that isn't tuned like the master.

    • @BONHAMOLOGY
      @BONHAMOLOGY  4 месяца назад

      I'm not going for a studio Bonham kit sound here when I use these drums. I believe that these are tuned very similarly to the way his Vistalite kit sounded. I'm sure you're aware of the sound of his kit from the many bootleg recordings from 73 and 75. Yes, that is correct that he preferred his wood shell Kit in the studio, and a three mic technique definitely achieves a Bonham type studio sound. I've made many videos that only use a couple over heads, bass drum and snare. Also, I mix in very little of the close mic'ing on the toms and snare. It's mostly the overheads and bass drum. however, it's a myth that he wasn't close mic'd in the studio. There are photos and studio track sheets that show the kit was often close mic'd. My recent video doing the Bonham "engine" was just 2 overheads, bass drum and snare mic...very little of the snare mic mixed in. Fair enough if you don't like the sound of the Vistalite, I didn't like them very much at all for a long time. But after playing them, I appreciate the different tonal qualities and can understand why Bonzo used them live, because of the clarity and volume.To me, they're another aspect of his sound and style, and he obviously experimented with different shell types. Who knows, it's likely he would have gone back to using a wood shell kit at some point. But I respectfully disagree that this doesn't sound anything like Bonham's Vistalite sound. This sounds very similar to Earl's Court for example.

    I had an RCI starlight kit and a 76 vistalite. The RCI were better made and better sounding shells.The 18x18 FT was the most awesome FT I have heard of any material. It focused and punched like a 16", but had that massive gong drum like rumble. I used aquarian super-2 clears (like Remo vintage emperor 5mil+7mil). Evans emad on kick.Fatter tone than cs dots.

    Smart move playing with the boots to avoid any copy strikes. This is definitely one of the shows where Plant sang with a smoker's voice!
    That kit sounds like it could knock a train off the rails. Did Bonzo have any control rings or some other dampener to control the resonance?

      I play along to the recording, through GarageBand and record my tracks into there. I then mixed the tracks in audacity, and add the music track minus the drums. I use Moises to take the drum track out of the song.
