So envious of people who can do this. I've been dancing since I was 5.. and I've never been able to do a switch leap well 😅😅
I know a lot of studios that don't like to concentrate on things like switch leaps because they focus more on "controled" movements like fouettes and pirouettes. But I think some places make switch leaps out to be harder than they are. All you need is practice, so don't get discouraged! This video is a huge help.
First rule of dance/life: Don't say "I can't"! I tell my dancers to say they need work or help on ____, not "I can't" or you defeat yourself in advance. Try working a saute off the prepping leg with a switch movement on the working leg (or practice landing w/an easier leap), & once you get that in muscle memory, add the battement, etc. With repetition, that might help you get there. Pay attention to what you are feeling in your body and correct it as you can. Don't give up!
That dancers run tho
Molly it's supposed to be like that. Not real running
i can't get my other leg up! it just stays straight :(
This is the only video on youtube that helped me with this!!!
OMG I remember when I couldn't do these and I watched this video to get help with doing them. Now I can do these and they feel awesome like I'm flying :) THanks video

What's the one that Maddie Ziegler normally does?
That one
Maddie does a switch arabesque leap; her hips change directions
OmfgLivvy12 Russian switch leap
Switch firebird leap I’m pretty sure, just for kix did a vid on it
Russian twist.
Thanxs this was really easy😄

these are so cool but they are so hard! Im working on them now
We have to do leap like these in ColourGuard!!
sure, makes it look soooo easy :o :p
Really good! I cant do switch leaps at all.
I already have it I did it in a solo it's alot if fun
having a great plea'
that looks SO hard!
NICE
@naturallycool100 agreed!
i was just informed i have to do this for a pom routine, and imt haveing a hard time but this video really did clarify it.
@giraffe1spots5 that makes a lot of sense! thank you! i have a problem of lifting my front leg when i do it
That was easier than what my teacher taught me!
her ''marking it'' is better than my full out?!?! wow i am so jealous, wish i could leap like this time to practice
it helps to chasse (sp?) and then do run, run to get more power.
I Love doing these!! if you're right jetes are easier try to chase on you're left and then you'll end up in a right jete after switching. ps. PLIE!!
I had to do a switch leap in Nutcracker this year (I was a Russian) and we did this differently. We did a chasse-step-step-switch. In my case I swung my left leg up even though I'm a righty. It's all personal preference though. If you keep doing it over and over again the leg you push off of will build up enough strength and you will FLY! Trust me. I had to learn a switch from nothing in 3 months and by the performance I was getting 3-4 feet off the ground.
@livetoDANCE11 when I do leaps I jump with my left leg BEFORE swishing and kicking my right. She swishes her right leg up first and then jumps. I don't know which one is right, but I think you can get more power if both legs are down when you jump.
its chasse (w. an accent on the e) and yes u can run, i did a solo and at the last minute i did the "run" and it came out perfect. the run works just as well, you just need to not force the steps into the ground or you'll use up your energy
do you have to be able to do the spilts to do a that?
If you are dominant in your right, do you start your chase with your right leg?
Start with your left leg in front. When you switch you will be in a right leg leap. That's how I was taught :)
these are ssssooooooo easy
@jfkvideos when i do it i can brush my leg front and back but i can't get my other leg high up enough in a full leap split.
if u have trouble doing these and u cant figure out why, make sure you remember to really use your plie, thats helps
i wish i could do switch leaps
A tip for making your left leg go higher would be to develop the muscles in your leg that way it will be easier. Also in my class we chasse twice and then run in a slight plie three times. It gives you more momentum for the leap.
@3hannah98
its more about leg stregnth than flexibility
make sure your legs are strong enough to switch fast enough
2 questions:
1 - Are Switch Leaps always brush or is it ok to developé?
2 - I absolutely love your guys' videos but could you please please please do some demonstrations with a chasé prep? I have to have switch leaps for my audition but we're not learning them in class yet so this is my only hope and we don't use the run prep. :O I would be forever grateful!
@EmmaSkies in my classes we normally do these with a chase prep on the same foot that's swinging then use our other leg for the "step" or leap... it's pretty much the same thing as the run just make sure you point your foot while going into the chase and go up instead of out to get off the floor more... it makes the leap A LOT easier!! unless you're going for movement, then take a wider chase to travel more. hope this helps! :]
i know how 2 do these!!!!=)
How to do a switch leap with an extra half turn or full turn?
Are there any skills?
And how to ensure that your leap is in perfect split position?
Thank your for your reply
oh ok... so do you know what type of dances 'jullliard' does mostly of (jazz lyrical hip hop)? like in football games or anything? i'm trying to figure out what college dance teams usually do, cuz i've seen some jazz, and hip hop and just not sure exactly.
what college do you go to? if you don't mind me asking, and also what type of dance do yall do? like is it mostly jazz or hiphop?
if you want to do the left splits in the air your right leg goes forward first and vice versa
@dancechick4ev yes!!!
soooo ahrd agh I have to do this in recital soon ...help!
@3hannah98 Yup, I agree with @iiijordann you need both leg strengh and flexibility. Try doing plies and rises and carry some weights as you do them(when you feel ready). Build up strengh gradually, so you don't hurt yourself.
Can you do a tutorial of a turning switch leap?
Karlie Place Yeah! Like Maddie used to do.
Are switch leaps and scissor leaps the same thing?
Yes switch leaps are hard
@dancechick4ev hahaha i second that!
hey does anyone know a good song for a jazz solo??
A jete entrelace is in theory a tour jete in which one leg brushes front and the other brushes to the back and opens into a jete while turning half a turn en l'air (in the air)
hmm im trying this and the only problem is i dont have enough power or momentum (i dont know which is needed) to straighten the supporting leg and achieve that full split in midair. any tips?
in general, they look a lot better if you can do the splits.
oooooooooooooooooh. i always thought that your backleg goes straight out before switching. that should make it easier now
@dancechick4ev same! !
@ELITEbananaful Dont say you CANT do it. Say you are still working on it! Anything is possible when you put your mind to it!
@Daliamaya3211 it sounds like you're learning a switch side leap..?
@LeeAnnbabee You are not the only one....i plan to dance at a University and that is all they do! Eeek!
@stephannoettes same here :-)
I can do the switch splits left leg but when i do my right side i cant land. i have my splits only on the right. shouldnt it be easier??? WHY! plz heeeelp
My name is Kaiya and I'm a dancer!
practice plies when your about to leap up
and it also takes practice :]
i am working on my switch leap its sooooo hard
I am trying to learn how to do this leap, does it matter which leg you start off with?
I hope you have learned it by now, but it does not. Whichever leg you leap off of will be in front when you leap.
hey just a tip if anyone cares, if you can't do 'em, i found it easier to do a triplet/step ball change (whatever your dance school calls it) then an extra step and then try the scissor leap. Hmmm =S
butterfly kick?
@Laddi4195 yeah i no same, thats my best switch hahaha soooo hard!
I wish I could do it ;
UGH!
I can sort of do a switch leap i just have a the technique and i land very loudly :p but for people if you want to do it JUMP JUMP JUMP it makes it easier and gives you more time to get the front leg up which is the hardest thing to do.
I have a question. There's this kind of leap that we have to do in dance but I forget what it's called. You do 2 steps backwards, turn and point your left leg, then jump turn and switch to the right leg in the air and land on the left if that makes sense lol. Does anyone know what that's called? :S
i working on them too! i suck... lol! im jealous of people below me who cando them!
To perfect it like all great dancers do, to compare notes on how the move is done, or to learn how they taught it so they can teach it to someone else...
chassé! :)
In my dance studio we call this a scissor leap
I can do every leap.....but this one...I try sooooooo hard...I think the problem is I'm not getting high enogh so that I can finish my switch.....-__________- any suggestions on how to get higher?
I've been told to do a lot of jumps in the air and jumping jacks help? But if you go to justforkix,.com under articles for students they have advice on getting jumps higher!
im guessing a tour jete. thats what it sounds like to me.
@cassidymoomoo chase haha well with an accent on the e
I could do this when I was like 8
you can do a sasse into it. not step ball change b/c that would be jazz.
