  • This includes a track section with Rack and Pinion to climb and descend the steep hill.
This train used to transport copper from Queenstown to the Tasmania West Coast port of Strahan.
These steam trains have however been modified to run their boilers on oil instead of coal.

Thanks for sharing. When we were in Tassie the train didn’t run on the day we were in Strahn . At the height of the covid.

One of the most fascinating, informative and scenic tours available. The history of how they shipped the APT Loco from Scotland I think it was and transported it on barges up the river and then through the wilderness is truly mind blowing. An amazing tour, testament to the guts and determination of those pioneers and a very memorable day well worth visiting to experience a travel back in time. Make sure you have someone show you the actual rack and pinion system on the locomotive too.

The WCWR - West Coast Wilderness Railway have 3 x Steam Locos & 2 x Diesel Locos : Steam : "Mt Lyell No. #1" Dubs 0-4-2T (Abt Rack & Pinion) (1896) ; "Mt Lyell No. #3" Dubs 0-4-2T (Abt Rack & Pinion) (1899) & "Mt Lyell No. #5" (Abt Rack & Pinion) (1938) ; Diesel Locos : "D1 / 22" Drewry 0-6-0DM (1953) (ex-EBR - Emu Bay Railway #22 Drewry c/n 2405) & "D2 / "Lyell" Drewry 0-6-0DM (1953) (ex-TGR - Tasmanian Govt Rly's #V13 Drewry c/n 2406) - Thank u 4 posting this video - !!! - The turntable is at Dubbil Barril where the rack Steam & Diesel services meet - !! - the Steam Loco heavy duty cogs are a permanent feature of the Abt / Rack System Steam Locos but only engage the double toothed centre "rack" rail on the very steepest sections of track where the safety of the ingenious Rack / Abt System is needed 2 prevent slippage, refusals & runaway trains - !!! - Don P. @@IndustrialParrot2816 I’m not sure of the specifics to how they plumb it up but to my understanding it’s a separate engine so the single boiler is feeding two powertrains. You can see where the inside set of cylinders are if you look under the smoke box at 5:00.
