The price is steep no question, but this one ticks all the boxes for me. It's a killer ;-)
I would really like to see Seiko adopt this 30.5mm dial size in place of the 28.5mm dials they've been using in all of their automatic SPB level pro divers for decades. The ISO required lume at all hour markers has created a huge problem for their design language, with the SPB 62MAS series *really* suffering in particular compared to the initial 2020 releases which didn't have lume at 3. Larger diameter dials would create enough space there for a little lume block without having to shove it into the minute track like an afterthought. The 40mm bezel here shows that a larger dial wouldn't create a problem, still plenty of room for the bezel. They'd just have to re-engineer their cases for the larger size going forward.
Totally agree! Would love to see 30.5mm dials in the future from Seiko.

doesn't always mean a larger watch. My 36mm vintage grand seiko has a 30mm dial. Tons of presence, makes wearing small watches much easier.
I jumped on the Uemura 80th blue limited and it's a true masterpiece! Maybe my favorite in my collection now. But man if this one was out first.. Just gorgeous. Great video as always.

@@EscapementWatch I have no regrets. Every time I think I want an Omega or Rolex, I wear the 049 and fall in love and can't imagine why I'd even bother with another watch. Just had it out on a dive too. SO cool seeing it underwater with a bit of lume. There's just a small amount of FOMO when I see this one though. Might be the first time Seiko did better with their press photos than the real product

You did make the right choice. I like this one but the dial texture goes unnoticeable and the cream Lum is not for me.
Very nice watch, and I really enjoy your videos - thanks for all the good work! I'm not sure how much it affects the amplitude number, but don't forget to set the lift angle to 53° on the Timegrapher for most Seiko automatics. 😊
from what I've seen....It affects it about 6-15 amplitude each degree off

I'm only here because I went to my local AD and saw this and couldn't believe the price. I'm well versed in Seiko divers(although I cant keep up at this point) and Grand Seiko. I was on the hunt for a new fun/beater piece. I asked to see this, and when it was handed to me and the salesman told me the price, I almost fainted. Aside from the 8L movement, this watch has all the hallmarks of a $500 Seiko. I'm not making this up. I wouldn't have asked to see it, if I knew it was one of their higher end models. It looks and feels like a blacked out King Turtle. I honestly thought it was just another new "limited edition" affordable black series divers. I'm telling you right now, I've held this thing in my hand tonight, and you've got to be off your rocker to spend that kind of coin on this watch, or you just got disposable income(which is perfectly fine haha).
I have it. Love it. EDIT: I guess mine is the JDM version. It comes with a very nice Olive colored hand made NATO buckle strap and the face has no texture. Identical otherwise.

I think with less than 50mm lug to lug if your wrist is more than that you should be fine to wear this, funny I have black bay 41mm and it’s lug to lug is same as sla039, wider than snr025 and snr049 which I all own and my wrist it tad under 7 inch.
If you look at this case shape and size it is more a “classic” style Willard than the new redesigned Willard’s. Which are 2mm smaller than the classic and the crown guard has a slightly different design and shape. This watch is more on par with the classic Willard.

Very nice..... But somehow I think the orange hands ruin it, orange and black not so good combination. Also a bit disappointed at low power reserve.. At this price point, it would be nice if they can give metal bracelet and extra straps. I still think it's pricey for Cpt Willard.

Sla051 isn't DLC. 061 is.

It’s the same movement as the 6R 35 same main spring just regulated differently and therefore it has 20 hours less power reserve is that worth three times the price the luxe that retail for 1300 have a hand adjusted movement also
No it is not. 8L35 is completely different architecture. www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/prospex/8L35 this movement used to be the 9S movement from grand seiko is a high teir movement. no relation to 6L or 6R35.
The best all black cushion case dive watch I have seen. BUT accuracy is disappointing; one of my NH35a powered Seiko homage watches is under 1 second a day fast or slow. Would be nice to see power reserve at least 70 hours. If I was ready to buy, I would. 1000 unit production will sell out quickly!
I’m not sure I like this. Why did they cheapen what should be a “top of the line” watch? I’ll keep my tried and true SLA021 over this any day.
Nice review - hard to film black-on-black watches! Hmm, thought I'd like this more. But I'm not a fan (and not just 'cos of the tacky 'X'!). I'm less keen on the Uemura case than the Willard and in black you lose the round bezel definition, so it all looks like a black blob (?) on the wrist. I think black watches need edge and sharpness to create light play, eg the LX series. There's some nice polishing/brushing, but light definition on black curves is almost impossible. But my main criticism is the dial - it just looks cheap - SPB level (for $3k).
I'm not convinced there's the margin (!) here to get a textured dial to work well (hence pressed at $3k) and done badly, they just look weak and gimmicky (see Sharp Edged series, latest Save the Oceans...). Oddly, Seiko's weakness can be paint/face texture (not colour). It's almost impossible to do a GS/SBEX for

Should be PVD coat, not DLC
Seiko watches are very similar in design. It is not worth paying so much for an SLA model.
