- Episode 2 - "The Funky Drummer"
In celebration of GoGo Preservation Week DC Public Library is proud to present this three-part podcast series, The Drummer’s Circle, hosted by Paul “Buggy” Edwards, to highlight some of DC’s most influential drummers. For decades, GoGo music has provided a backdrop for DC life and culture, known especially for its distinct use of percussion and rhythm, earning DC drummers a special reputation for powerful and quality performance.
Very few people had the privilege of getting James Brown’s musical stamp of approval. DMV native, Aaron Spears, was one of those few. Before his recent passing, Spears graced the stage with artists such as Usher, Chaka Khan, Adam Lambert, Ariana Grande and many more. Admired by fellow drummers for his technical ability, a.k.a. “chops”, Aaron’s impact was felt across the DC-Metro area as a golden standard for younger drummers to strive toward. Watch this episode of the Drummer’s Circle Podcast, to discover how legendary GoGo drummers like Paul “Buggy” Edwards influenced his success playing in several genres, laugh about his run-in with James Brown’s ahead of the 2005 GRAMMYs, and learn how he built his life to balance passion for music with love for family.

It would have been so Cool to See Aaron on the BIGGEST STAGE .... SUPERBOWL 2024
That's would have been amazing man 😢😢
GREAT interview. Thank you Buggy and the production team for a great video. Sleep peacefully to a real one: Aaron Spears.
Wow, not so many guys talk about Marvin. I grew up listening to Fred Hammond since I was a baby so I knew every musician, and I fell in love with drums so Marv was my inspiration. It’s nice to hear him mentioned amongst the greats. RIP Aaron 🙏🏼 45:08
Man Marvin!!! This may sound odd, but he had a distinct way that he played his Ride cymbal that ONLY he did & I STILL love to this day! He also had the coolest set-ups! 😎
@@ntrakit6 I agree, he had a distinct way of hitting those crash cymbals too. Just so much power and he hits both at the same time like it’s his signature move
Marvin. I cry still. That guy...
Yeh man. Marvin’s still my favourite drummer to this day. Nice to hear him still getting the love
Thanks, Buggy! RIP Aaron
It warmed my heart @ 26:55 when he mentioned the thing about ‘Mint Condition’! That’s one of my favorite bands of ALL time back home. Stokely the lead singer outta 5, is top 2 drummers of ALL time for me with Michael Bland @ #1! I DO NOT brag, so I wasn’t sure how it would look here sharing some ACTUAL blessed times I’ve met some of the guys he mentioned and I am nowhere near the caliber of anybody & nobody to all of you…….so…..…R.I.P. Marvin McQuitty, John Blackwell, & Aaron Spears!!! 😎
Two 🐐
