Montserrat Caballe, world famous soprano, was greatly admired by Freddie Mercury, and she loved his natural singing ability, so it was a dream come true for them both to record these songs together. You can see in their faces how much they enjoyed the performance.

Freddie wrote this for her, as he said she was the best singer in the world. It was shown at the 1992 Olympics. He knew he would be gone by then. This became a huge hit in Europe and England. She wanted to do an entire album with him, so he wrote more songs for them to sing as duets. They were loving friends for the rest of Freddie's life

Read the story of their first meeting than becoming great friends. Great mutual respect, as unlikely as that woukd have seemed.

Her name is pronounced “Mont-ser-ROT”, with the emphasis on the last syllable, “Ca-bah-YAY.” When Freddie demoed these songs for her in his studio, he sang all her arias for her. She was floored and said she fell in love with his voice on the spot. They were friends for the remainder of Freddie’s life.

When the proposed collaboration between Freddie Mercury and legendary Opera Diva Montserrat Caballe, was first learned of, many were sceptical and derisory. Montserrat was even accused of betrayal of her operatic heritage and dire consequences were forecast. Yet thankfully they were steadfast, determined to proceed with their project. It should Not have succeded on so many levels, their wildly different singing styles,. He was a global rock superstar, she however was (is still) considered by many to be one of the greatest Operatic "Diva's"(I use the term in it's purest sense here)of all time. The "impossible" combination of rock music and opera, like trying to mix oil and water. It would be a disaster..!!
Yet they were steadfast and determined to proceed with their project. They went ahead and when first performed at the prestigious "Ku Club" on the island of Ibiza in 1987, they totally confounded their critics, not only succeeding but superceeding expectations, on every level. It was greeted with instant wildly raptourous acclaim . They had silenced their detractors forever. Althuogh originally composed by Freddie and his musical maestro Mike Moran as a tribute and homage to Montserrat, being both her birthplace and hometown. It was also the site of the first actual meeting between the two musical giants, they were subsequently approached by the comittee fronting the bid by Barcelona to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, who wanted to use the piece as central to their bid. Both performers enthusiastically agreed and the bid was successful. This magnificent performace was during an evening of joyous and lavish celebrations to officially welcome the Olympic Flag to the city of Barcelona. It was hoped by some that the duo might perform it at theOpening Ceremony, but the fates decreed otherwise and Freddie sadly died 7 months prior to the event.. A recording of this amazing duet was incorporated into the Opening Ceremony though and the piece became the Official Anthem of the games.
Montserrat only performed the duet once after Freddie's demise and then it was to a recording of his voice, but it was an incredibly difficult task for her, utterly draining her emotinonally. She never repeated it and preferred to keep the anthem as a sacred and lasting tribute to her dear, cherished friend and collaborator. Sadly she died in 2018 and the world suddenly became both a little colder and greyer.
Yet thanks to technology we can still enjoy and thrill to this momnet of triumphant, musical magic.
Freddie once quipped that, "Music knows no age.." and 37 years on it still rings true.....
    "VIVA, BARCELONA" !!!

Great reaction! They did a whole album together, it is a great album. You should check out The Golden Boy by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe ruclips.net/video/OPizyP4x30I/видео.html from this same show, in typical Freddie style he made song that has a mixture of opera and gospel it is really amazing. Another great one is How Can I Go On Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballe ruclips.net/video/ksNoe8W2jTc/видео.html. The two of them really loved each other, Freddie loved he voice and she loved the fact Freddie gave her so much freedom to create something of her own. She also said he was a great singer. In one song she actually provided the lyrics for the song, it is also the only song on the album where Freddie really does the whole song as an opera singer, she wanted him to do it.
