But at 2:48, who moves the camera, the boat coz cam on gimbal? There are decidedly more questions than you answered... Get that cameraman in front of the camera!!! (you fakes)(again!). Hmm, probably should have watched to the end 😔
Yup, always watch til the end before commenting. Like we said, Step 217 was the most accurate portrayal of what our daily life actually looks like. In order to do that without a full camera crew, we had to creatively stage in and plan how we were going to film it. Don't worry, like we said, they won't all be like this. But with your logic, any time a camera is on, it can be seen as "fake" since the decision to turn the camera on has already halted "reality". As creators, we do the best we can to accurately portray what our lives are like and the adventure we go on. But at the end of the day, you're still only seeing a 15 min highlight or 1% of what actually happened that week. Everyone watching is entitled to their own opinion, and that is ok, but it won't stop us from continuing to make the videos we enjoy making, however we decide to make them.
Thank you Uma for unraveling this side of your life ! you are so right: for any YT video out there, the people making these videos always have the CHOICE of the type of content they want everyone to see. Many emphasize on DRAMA, you raise the bar by emphasizing on your skills and quality! great job!
As a fellow Canadian who is retired from the television and production industry, I have to say, watching the production value that the two of you put into your segments every week is astounding. I have worked with hundreds of different production professionals who I consider to be the cream of the crop, and I will say, without hesitation, that I would hire the two of you to work on any project I was involved with. Keep it up, keep trying new shots!!! Oh, if you do ever need an extra cameraman... David
They are young, its all new and exciting to them. We did it back in the 90s with tape,. Try that with only a tape recorder and tv monitor. ! O and our camera weighed 10kg.
I'm 78years old, retired Sheriff's Deputy from South West Louisiana and you guys are a major part of my retirement. I am past buying a boat and fixing it up but can do it through you. Thanks for sharing your adventure with me.
Whenever I watch your films I say in my mind " that shot took a lot of time they had to go put the camera there then go back to where they were going to leave from then come towards the camera, then pick up the camera and go back to the boat. And I knew that's how you were doing it that you didn't have extra people. What an excellent job you did in this film. I enjoyed it so so much! I'm a widow and I live by myself and it's interesting to see how two people talk to each other. I've been a little for 13 years and I'm going what could you possibly say all day long? It just made me smile to see your day.
What an interesting video. I spent 36 years working in TV, 25 of them as an editor. 20 years ago I was teaching classes in Post-production to BBC trainee directors, and I could have used this video just on its own as an intro! You did an excellent job on Step 217. I had already guessed how you did most of it, but I didn't know about the "Handheld" plug-in. Final-Cut appeared around the time I left the industry, so I never did get to use it. Being able to shoot in 2K or 4K gives you the latitude to do something like that. Back in the pre-HD days the loss of resolution would have made it really noticeable. Kika is a really professional editor! I liked your discussion about the sound FX. That was one of my favorite jobs, though I usually worked with a dubbing editor/mixer. My favorite story is when I worked on a film about rhino conservation in Zimbabwe. The shot was a very long shot with a 600mm lens of a pair of rhinos about a mile away. The only sound we had was wind. We made a "rhino footsteps" sound effect from scratch. One element was bags of flour being dropped! Keep safe.
This is basically a cut & paste from E217: This was a phenomenal episode! Both the multiple camera work and editing were top notch, and the sound editing was superb. You two have come so far along that I think it is the best sailing centered programming on RUclips, perhaps in all genres. You are naval architects and videographers. This was a pleasure to watch.
You single handed filmed a broadcast quality/ length show. I can hear the studio bosses asking, " Why can't we do that and save tons of production costs?"
I think the two of you, working together, are like child protegees. You figure out complicated problems before the typical "kid" would. You're humble about it because you don't realize you've got talents that most others don't. The way you do your regular videos impresses me. And your "A day in the Life" video was even cooler. But once you explain some of the more hidden details in today's video I was really amazed! And saying how you stretched your creativity while figuring out how to make the every day video is very encouraging! I've been wanting to try some basic videography connected with my own small sailboat and now I'm even more motivated. Thanks! Scott W
I think their major relationship advice is being each other's best friend all the time. And never saying stuff without thinking about it first. A lot of times we say things not thinking about the other person's feelings and when I watch them they seem to always be looking for ways to show the other consideration and love. It's really beautiful.
I was literally just sitting and having coffee thinking about how much of an achievement that last video was. It's been fascinating to see y'all develop as film makers. Great work.
I found your last movie very refreshing to watch. Ordinary life seems to be also ineresting to all of us locked in our flats and houses. Keep going and stay healthy!
For me the best part about that video was “knowing” you didn’t have anyone helping you. (Technically I didn’t KNOW but I thought that was the point!) so glad to find out I was correct. Superb work guys!
Yup, your last video is definitely going to be my favourite now. Your love for your lifestyle and your passion for sailing is showing through 100% on your videos and that is Not fake at all, that's 101% real. Keep going. Never ever give up on your dream (I think you said that before).
This was so satisfying because as beautiful as every little part of the previous video was, all I could think about during it was "how are they doing this!?"
And this year's Oscar goes to Dan and Kika for their exceptional performances in "Boat Life", directed by Dan and Kika, Sound by Dan and Kika, Editing by Kika.😊 I was wondering how you got those shots where the camera followed you. Now I know the drone can be set to follow you. That explains alot of other footage shot with the drones I've seen. 👍 Great job.
Your videos have become addictive to watch. I am not a sailor and way to old to ever consider doing anything vaguely outrageous as you are doing. There are two things I love. 1. Your absolute enthusiasm for what you are doing. Never once have I detected that you are "faking" it. (Although I am certain you have your moments). 2. The chemistry between the two of you. You feed off each other. Love it. Keep it up from the South African bush.
Oh my god I can't imagine the planning involved in shooting the making of "a day in our lives" At THE SAME TIME as shooting "a day in our lives". Fantastic!
I agree. I keep trying to watch stuff on Netflix, but a few minutes into most programs I think, "You know - I'm still not caught up on Sailing UMA." And then, here I am - watching another step.
The movie was very well made and I want to say thank you for showing some of your daily life as it actually happens. The video production over the last two years with the documentaries and the behind the scenes has been top-notch! Production quality, audio, music choice, edits, very well done. I do wish that some of the DIY videos over the last few years had as much detail and information in them as it would have answered some burning questions about a few projects, but the way they were done is very good! One of the biggest items that keep me clicking next is the quality of these videos. Your enthusiasm, playfulness, information, and just glimpses into sailing life are what keeps me and the almost 200k viewers coming back each week. I truly know that it is hard work to make these, at least 6 hours a day sometimes for me to edit, music choice, production, starting and stopping filming, fixing glitches... I applaud you for doing this for the last 6? years. Well done! I look forward to many more adventures throughout the parts of Europe that are on my dream list!
Nooooo! The magician never gives away the secrets. You deserve an award for the video you created. It is a masterpiece! Thanks for the peek behind the curtain. Magic!
As someone who was born and raised in NYC, and now living in the NYC suburbs, I look forward to your videos. I love being out on the water, your lifestyle goes to such an extreme, by living on the water! The love and care you have for each other and UMA really shows in each video. I NEVER would have thought of navigating the Atlantic Ocean, so, I followed you with amazement! Continued success to the both of you.
One of the reasons you guys are my go to channel. The amount of effort and dedication you guys put into your film and editing amazes me. It definitely shows. True joy to watch. My other fav is Wild Wonderful off-grid. Again the film work amazeballs.
I am floored! Not only did you shoot a stunning short film, but you shot the making of at the same time. So the scene that had me convinced there was a 3rd person was towards the beginning when Kika in laying on the settee. The camera moves a little but doesn't follow the movement of the boat, which wouldn't happen with a tripod alone. Chapeau pour votre travail!
That was a peek behind the curtain of the hard (and inspired) work you put into the flawless and easy looking positive end result that you generously present to us land lubbers regularly! Especially letting us see that with minimal equipment you have learned (and we were privileged to witness that progress) to reach a very high standard of videography! Thank you for all the effort and for letting us into the 1 or 2 percent of your exiting life.
I can truly understand and appreciate all the work that went into this project. The “planning” you mention - what we call storyboarding - was a huge element. And, you mastered the one key to photography and video - the lighting, which can be so tricky. Lastly, having the forethought to reshoot certain clips, and capture your own audio sound bites was brilliant. Toughest project we had in school was to create, shoot, edit, and produce a short story over multiple days, with a single camera and no lav mics. Wardrobe, props, settings, placements, even coffee cups become so huge, with such an undertaking. Hats off to you for a job well done. A masterful edit, made possible by taking the time to storyboard every detail - including camera angles. There’s a popular term we live by (photography and video) called “shoot for the edit”. When you begin a project by considering how you’ll edit, it truly influences how and what you shoot, which makes Kika’s job so much easier. Quality in ... quality out. Bravo!
These two little video’s has been really special. As everybody else I’m impressed by Your Skills, whether it’s mending Your boat or designing a new layout or filming. But that episode 217 really take the prize, it’s simply mind blowing. I love You two and how You live together. But what make Your VLOG special is the slow and relaxed heartbeat. And Your Pippi Longstockings attitude of: I haven’t tried that, so I’m certain that I can do it.
Awesome follow up. As I watched the original video, I recognized early on that you guys were doing something special. And I could tell a TON of effort went into producing that simple day-in-the-life episode (and yes, I did make a mental note of the single foot stomp GoPro shot when I first saw it). Gotta say, I also especially enjoyed the simple intro with the drone overhead of UMA contrasted by the black waters, very slowly passing by with the title simply fading into the scene. Excellent work guys, and from my perspective - well worth the efforts. Keep up the fantastic artistic expression!
When we were watching the Silks, it was so beautiful that your different hairstyles weren't even on our radar. My wife Tammie is always the one to notice when something is different, but even now, shes says she's gotta go back just to see that. Great info here guys! Always enjoy your videos!
I support that. And yes, I adore Kika's hair too! Kika, you remember me a teenage sweethearth of mine of, oh my gosh, 50 years ago ! We were both 17, different schools, different skin color, different close friends BUT, same music choices ! We met at a Sly and Family Stone concert here in Montréal, Québec. Love at first sight ! Then, automn, college. In different cities... Still think of Her dearly. Oh well...
Great job, guys. Storyboard = planning, "hiking" = traveling, panning is always great, as long as it's smooth and unhurried, don't want to give your audience whiplash. Loved your great ips and really great tips. Loved the great tips and your enthusiasm and the moves using the two long scarfs were a knockout. I've seen some pros doing this and your wife was their equal. Love it all, your really good.
Thank you so much.. This brings back my days of filming and just going out an shooting. You guys nailed it. I did watch the last vid. and was ya this is ok but, Know that you showed us what you did to make it all come together. Showed us just how good you are and all the work that went into this. Motivated me to dust off my cameras, just need a place to develop the film.. Carry-on
That was great! Thanks for that. I was really wondering about the hand hold done in post and if it was the drone sitting on a shelf recording with its stabilized camera and the boat was moving around it ;) It all reminded me of Neistat's pre vlog travel video where he went all cinematic as an exercise. It is sooooo much harder to do than it looks. In fact, the better it is there harder it was. Your video was absolutely excellent. I like how you say music is emotion. In how-tos I use it for transitions, but I like your use better. It was just awesome and thanks for the peak behind the curtain :) f
The amazing thing for me is that you didn't lose sight of the content by getting all caught up in the technical aspects of filming and editing. Unfortunately for sailing vlogs you have taken it to the next level. If I were a blogger I'd be hating you guys big time right now. Congratulations!
That was great. I never knew just how much work, time, patience and effort is involved in your videos. Good job done guys and the editing is second to none well done. From Alex on the sunny Isle of Wight Xx
Thanks for showing us how much effort you put in your content! The tips are really useful, I especially like the ones with a tripod. I'll definitely give these a shot!
Oh to be young again. Please continue the things you do and never ever forget that the two of you do it together. My life would have been so different if my wife had enjoyed the same things as me and vise versa. We owned a cruiser but it was not her thing and therefore it just wasn't a lot of fun for either of us. LOve each other and never forget that you are a team in everything you do.
I really loved this video! It shows how multidimensional you both are. I love how you constantly challenge yourselves. One thing though, you haven’t given us an update on Kika’s visa re-application.
I've watched this in amazement at least 3x. Even though you've explained how you guys filmed it....im still in that moment of your lives. Incredible!! You two are amazing!
It’s funny, I watched the Day-in-the-life video with my son (he sometimes watches with me), and I said, “they’re lying about what’s going on.” I said that during the silks “scene.” He asked what I meant and I said, “Dan went below to cook while Kika is doing silks, who is filming?” He’s like, *Ooooh*. Lots of work to make a cool video. Thanks for the behind-the-scenes look.
The videos are amazing. And you two are amazing. I've enjoyed watching your work evolve. Yes, that was the vibe I was picking up on- that it was mentally taxing and time consuming. And I find myself wanting you not to work so hard. My whole question was did you either have crew or was in filmed in more than one day, as it was presented. So you answered perfectly. Five days explains a lot. Especially about Dan showering while at the same time filming the silking (which is now officially a verb). I do hope you guys relax some, as well. I have a feeling, also, that you may have over-achiever and perfectionist tendencies? So I'm sure you take time to self-care and drop back down into your bodies and let your minds rest and recharge. Much love, as always! V
Totally! Like we said, we were on anchor for 3 weeks before making this video....and this is the only video we made while anchored there for almost a month. The other time was just spent enjoying spring and the end of a long, cold winter and excitement for our summer plans. That's the thing, when we choose to relax and take a break, no one knows about it, because it's never filmed or edited.
I am still on year one, but had watch the new motor and caught the day in the life. It was amazing, I had to make popcorn adn turn the lights down like it was a theater. Amazing job. Now back to the first year and get caught up. Thank you for what you do...
I'm thinking about making a film of how I made a film of me sitting on the couch watching how you made that amazing film. Oppps, I admitted I bought a couch..dang.
Just binged, your vlog/show, excellent. Dan is the man for what he got going on , no arrogance or dushiness at all, a class act. Kika is a total package. Glad to know you two are in the world.
*Absolutely brilliant* One thing I have learned, is that you guys really know how to push the boundaries. _Have you had that call from Steven Spielberg yet_ ? 😉
The video work you guys do is always fantastic, it's definitely a factor that drew me in to your channel. You guys are way better with video than I am (I do still photography mostly) but just a couple things that came to mind. The Osmo Pocket might be a good investment. It is *incredible*. The quality of the video is excellent, you can select people or object and track them, the gimbal works great, etc. The one accessory I suggest is a mount to hold your phone and the Osmo together when you want a bigger screen to work on. I shoot off a tripod almost all the time and also shoot a lot of panoramas, so I know a thing or two about tripods. 🤣. That aluminum one you have is crazy heavy to carry around for sure. The good thing about that is that it's stable on a rocking boat or in a lot of wind - important especially if you're not standing with it to keep it from tipping. Carbon fiber tripods are expensive, but they are excellent. Most have a hook you can hang your bag from to add weight/stability when needed. Just be careful if you do buy a new one...smaller and lighter is definitely not always better. The ball head you have on your tripod is convenient and quick to set up but a 3 way head or fluid head would be better to allow you to pan. You can get three way heads that are cheapish and light, fluid I'm not sure about. Im always happy to ramble on boringly about tripods so if you ever have questions just ask. 👍 Great work on your last video. So many tricks I did not notice at all. I did notice the missing JBL on the silks part though! 🙃
I make short films and I sail - have dome for many many years and am now well into my plans to move to a permanent life on the ocean in early 2023 - this video is just the best training video to show my wife :-) You have explained really well the film making and story telling process. It will prove to her that I am not nuts making everyone do a different take of the same scenes - best of all - you highlight the advantage of shooting the same thing with two or three cameras running. I'll show this to her and "rest my case". Really have enjoyed watching all your videos so far and as importantly, observe your story and film making skills develop along with Uma and life! Keep it going - lovely work
But at 2:48, who moves the camera, the boat coz cam on gimbal? There are decidedly more questions than you answered... Get that cameraman in front of the camera!!! (you fakes)(again!). Hmm, probably should have watched to the end 😔

Bravo!
Your team work and attitude toward each other is refreshing uplifting 😊
These two little video’s has been really special. As everybody else I’m impressed by Your Skills, whether it’s mending Your boat or designing a new layout or filming. But that episode 217 really take the prize, it’s simply mind blowing. I love You two and how You live together. But what make Your VLOG special is the slow and relaxed heartbeat. And Your Pippi Longstockings attitude of: I haven’t tried that, so I’m certain that I can do it.
Love the Dutch lesson in the background ;)
We gotta start somewhere. Neither of us know any words of Dutch. Time for a crash course.
@@SailingUma happy to help!
At least you had colours right. Enjoy a kroket for me!
I watched it again and there was a LOT of acting going on as well! You two have taken the Sailing Vlogs to a whole NEW level!
Keep up the fantastic artistic expression!
même si je ne comprends pas tout, j'apprécie cette belle synergie entre vous qui réalise des films de qualité, merci beaucoup!🙂
You guyz are turning into actual "FILM MAKERS"!
BTW your sequences, (transitions) from one scene to the next are spot on. It keeps your storyline flow.
Very insightful! Over the last 5 years your filming and editing skills have really honed (and a bit of acting ;) ). Great work!
When we were watching the Silks, it was so beautiful that your different hairstyles weren't even on our radar. My wife Tammie is always the one to notice when something is different, but even now, shes says she's gotta go back just to see that. Great info here guys! Always enjoy your videos!
The scene of you retrieving the camera in the woods remidned me of old Discovery Cannel show "Survivorman"
Again & again.. many thanks for creating this window into your world
Wow , there's a whole lotta work that goes into each episode ! / Kika your hair looks fabulous ;-)
Thank you so much!😊
I support that.
Oh well...
SO MUCH
Great job, guys.
Carry-on
At 13.40 i crack up. You two chasing each other back and forth with the camera. Its the simple things that make one giggle. TY
I knew exactly how you did it and I'm so proud of myself for getting it right. Feels good man
Repel Lemon Eucalyptus works really well. It’s deet free and smells pretty good as well.
That was great. I never knew just how much work, time, patience and effort is involved in your videos. Good job done guys and the editing is second to none well done. From Alex on the sunny Isle of Wight Xx
What a dynamic team!!! You two provide great hope for many concepts including the truth of love!!! Thanks!!!
Nicely done, really enjoyed the whole explanation and routine. Definitely a success.
Great people enjoying their lives. Love it.
I love the chemistry between the two of you and the minimalist lifestyle seems like my sort of thing.
No, your episode proved you are film makers. Exceptional. Thanks for the effort!
I really loved this video! It shows how multidimensional you both are. I love how you constantly challenge yourselves.
One thing though, you haven’t given us an update on Kika’s visa re-application.
coming soon....
You two are truly amazing! I love the way you 2 are always challenging yourselves. Consistently thriving forward while exploring the 🌎
Go Pro shot was the running and small kick of dirt going by the camera
Where was this filmed? Was there a logging operation going on?
I've watched this in amazement at least 3x. Even though you've explained how you guys filmed it....im still in that moment of your lives. Incredible!! You two are amazing!
It’s funny, I watched the Day-in-the-life video with my son (he sometimes watches with me), and I said, “they’re lying about what’s going on.” I said that during the silks “scene.” He asked what I meant and I said, “Dan went below to cook while Kika is doing silks, who is filming?” He’s like, *Ooooh*. Lots of work to make a cool video. Thanks for the behind-the-scenes look.
Outstanding job. There is nothing like trying something new to get the creative juices flowing.
What a great video - both fun to watch and very informative! Great to see you guys getting better and better while enjoying yourselves along the way!
Very well done! I thought you had participated with some film schools for a project of them.... impressive planning and flawless execution! Bravi!
I am still on year one, but had watch the new motor and caught the day in the life. It was amazing, I had to make popcorn adn turn the lights down like it was a theater. Amazing job. Now back to the first year and get caught up. Thank you for what you do...
I DON'T LIKE IT!! I LOVE IT!!!! GOOD JOB GUYS
The level of storytelling and filming/editing you two have atchived is simply amazing...
I'm thinking about making a film of how I made a film of me sitting on the couch watching how you made that amazing film. Oppps, I admitted I bought a couch..dang.
Lol
Love your videos. Don't allow the dissenters to get you down. Your camera and editing work is beautiful. Thank you!
Wow, I was sure that there was a cameraman :) This episode looks like professional.
Just binged, your vlog/show, excellent. Dan is the man for what he got going on , no arrogance or dushiness at all, a class act. Kika is a total package. Glad to know you two are in the world.
Brilliant as always. Quite interested to know how much memory you used and how long it takes to download all the clips then render.
Very inspiring! This kind of video definitely is my sleeve of shirt, lol. Can't wait for the next one!
*Absolutely brilliant* One thing I have learned, is that you guys really know how to push the boundaries.
_Have you had that call from Steven Spielberg yet_ ? 😉
The sound design was fantastic. It added to the story and elevated the video that much more. I’m glad that you shared the how to.
We really enjoy watching Uma for years actually, what a great couple. Bet your going bit stir crazy right now, take care with love from 🇨🇦.
Love your spirit of adventure, on the water and in the movies.
Snipped, scene, segment, sequences. Who cares. You say tomato, I say tomatoes. None the less, I love your,” footages”. 🤪😆😁Thanks for sharing...
You are truly talented. You could do commercial full length documentaries like Ken Burns. You are that talented.
Great work on your last video. So many tricks I did not notice at all. I did notice the missing JBL on the silks part though! 🙃
Lovely couple. It's a great job and effort. Keep the spirit and be together for the rest of your lives.
Lovely souls.
Thanks
I love seeing how the sausage is made, almost as much as eating the sausage. Oops that sounds dirty ;-)
Keep it going - lovely work
I feel like I just got scammed....great job!
haha!
IT WORKED! Wonderful ;-) Congrats
