Back in 1976 or 77 I had a stainless steel stove put in the main salon of my new Challenger 35, Full keel, barn door rudder. We backed it up to the wooden bulkhead to the Salon & toilet/shower that it was mounted on with, at that time, an 1/8" asbestos sheet which worked perfectly to protect the bulkhead. The stove was about 24" high and about 6" square. It took a little experimenting but we got it to function perfectly either under way or at anchor or dockside. To get it going we first put in a little paper, any kind including old napkins or bags, then on top of the paper we put a few dried twigs and depending on how long and how hot we wanted to get it we either put some small broken up driftwood or pea coal and away we went. It could pull the chill out of the cabin in a jiff. my 11 and 7 year old could handle the stove. Great memories of snowy mornings either in April or October or November on Lake Ontario, NY and Canada.
Dan, when your co-captain says, "When she gets back to the Caribbean she is going to go naked all the time" your response is supposed to be, "Course change prepare to come about!"
got to wonder why it would take returning to the Caribbean. Weather in Europe is quite warm enough for half of the year at least :) Guess they're so used to tropical island life by now that anything under 25C is too cold for them, lol
@@jwenting Quote "that anything under 25C is too cold" I remember when I came back from a 32 °C hot and dry summer France, back to a cold, moist and very windy 10 °C Denmark. I was freezing like a chihuahua in a snow covered garden.

Did you have time to do some regen tests with the OV motor already ? We want to see the results ! :) Btw, small administrative remark : The UK has never been part of the Shengen "space", Shengen and the EU are two different things, Switzerland is part of it for instance, although not an EU member (same for Norway). (besides we know why you are going to NL, to get some good weed, no need to hide that ;) )
I stumbled on your channels 3 days ago. And I have been binge-watching ever since. I believe I watch more than half of your videos already. Thank you for making me the inspirational videos.
So happy for you guys that the pesky visa rules for Europe and the Schengen countries are sorted out! I would hope you took the journey up the Norwegian coast but I guess it's a bit late in the season to reach above the arctic circle before the midnight sun disappears? Great to see you back on the water again!
Generating power under sail: Did you test your boats electric motor’s generating mode? If so how did it affect your boats cruising speed? My guess is that it could be significant.
I was wondering that also. As well as seeing what the performance cost is in terms of boat speed, how much power is generated at various boat speeds would be really interesting. It could be a great topic for a separate video for us technical geeks!
Heyo! I’m gonna be buying my own yacht pretty soon, it’s a 31 foot ferrocement double ended that my late uncle built from the ground up when Zimbabwe was still Rhodesia. Is there any advice you have for refitting the interior as well as how to properly nape this the running and standing rigging?
That sounds like a great Yacht! All the best to you and your Late Uncle's Yacht! I'm positive he would be so happy to know that you are keeping her in the water! I have a hunch he knows! Very cool!
Make sure you get the hull surveyed and if insurance is important to you make sure it is insurable at a reasonable price. Many are not insuring ferro cement.
Start your own RUclips channel and believe me you'll get all the advice you ever wanted. Never mind the fancy stuff and just video your question. For starters just a walk through and around so we can see the boat. It's really easy to set one up.
Look at the Netherlands being all sensible while "other" countries are just plain dumb!! Good on ya Netherlands, thanks for dealing with the visa issue like an adult!
Kudos to smarties. But in fact and in retrospect I don't understand why some countries are being so annoying with visitors (free advertising for tourism anyone?) . We have illegal immigrants that land on our beaches every day, hands in their pockets and they are free to move in Europe so...
Sometimes when you’re running with swells on your beam you can put up your main and trim it just off center line to give you a heel on one side or the other.
Well, a few words to learn in Dutch : goedemorgen -good morning, bedank -thank you, alles goed? / hoe gaat het met jou? - how are you? Money heist is better in Spanish. I speak spanish and the translation in english is not the best on Netflix.

was thinking the same: so damn close after all these years
The world is not so small after all.
First of all, let me say that I REALLY,REALLY, LOVE your weekly videos. I actually look forward to seeing them every week. I am not a sailor. My chosen mode of traveling is backpacking, so I admire the both of you very much. Could you please do a video on how to read your radar screen, for us novices, and keep the videos coming. Thanks!
Three questions:
How will the Covid-19 lockdowns affect your travel plans?
Have you used the wood stove?
How has it worked out?
That quick shot of The White Cliffs of Dover... amazing!
It was pretty surreal to be there and sail across.
I can't imagine.... I'm so happy I stumbled across y'all's vlogs.
Welcome to Amsterdam! The UK was never in Schengen, always been one foot in and one foot out of the European collective.
When kika was waking up and groggy was so relatable. and WOOOO!!!! you got the visa! great news!
Dan, when your co-captain says, "When she gets back to the Caribbean she is going to go naked all the time" your response is supposed to be, "Course change prepare to come about!"
got to wonder why it would take returning to the Caribbean. Weather in Europe is quite warm enough for half of the year at least :)
Guess they're so used to tropical island life by now that anything under 25C is too cold for them, lol
CaptainDuckman he said THE MED as in the Mediterranean, which is perhaps where the confusion comes from. Didn’t mention the Caribbean.
Edmund the idea of the scrumptious co-captain naked jumbled his mind. She is such a delightful and lithe spirit. How did they meet?
@@jwenting Quote "that anything under 25C is too cold"
I remember when I came back from a 32 °C hot and dry summer France, back to a cold, moist and very windy 10 °C Denmark.
I was freezing like a chihuahua in a snow covered garden.
@@jwenting Maybe air temp ok for sailing, But the water Temperature is always cold in and around the UK. With wet suit its ok but thats not much fun.
An Iconic channel being voyaged by an ICONIC YT CHANNEL!!! You guys are so awesome 😎
Serendipity ..... Sailing Uma joins Noraly Schoenmaker of Itchy Boots in Amsterdam - my two following channels. Could it happen that the two coincidently meet? A mouth watering prospect indeed .......
I love your videos. They bring back so many memories of my blue water cruising days back in the late 90's. Fair winds and gentle waters to you.
Did you have time to do some regen tests with the OV motor already ? We want to see the results ! :)
Btw, small administrative remark : The UK has never been part of the Shengen "space", Shengen and the EU are two different things, Switzerland is part of it for instance, although not an EU member (same for Norway).
(besides we know why you are going to NL, to get some good weed, no need to hide that ;) )
I stumbled on your channels 3 days ago. And I have been binge-watching ever since. I believe I watch more than half of your videos already. Thank you for making me the inspirational videos.
You could start a band called "the fallen vegetables"!
So happy for you guys that the pesky visa rules for Europe and the Schengen countries are sorted out! I would hope you took the journey up the Norwegian coast but I guess it's a bit late in the season to reach above the arctic circle before the midnight sun disappears? Great to see you back on the water again!
Generating power under sail:
Did you test your boats electric motor’s generating mode?
If so how did it affect your boats cruising speed? My guess is that it could be significant.
The regeneration test is my question also.
I saw a folding prop ..... can't see that working for regen
@@faircompetition1203 but it does!
faircompetition1 the folding capability is controlled from the steering column via a cable, so they can lock it open for regen.
I was wondering that also. As well as seeing what the performance cost is in terms of boat speed, how much power is generated at various boat speeds would be really interesting. It could be a great topic for a separate video for us technical geeks!
I love this channel for so many reason. The first and best is seeing a mono-hull healed over and cruising. Thank you
When you’re not a morning person the struggle is real😉
OMG, this is amazing news!! I have been making the Schengen Dance for 7 years and still no way out of it. Congratulations !!
Hi Robert - we lived in Zimbabwe in 1983-84 and the guy next door was building a ferro-cement yacht. Was that your uncle? Fairbairn Drive.
Robert Johnson check out Sailing Catalpa channel, a young family sailing a ferro cement boat.
I love love love you guys, Dan you’re making us men proud.
So glad you got your Visa sorted.
So sorry we failed you with that.
Miss you both already.
Ahh, just rewound a few seconds. Foldable winch handle (Very “Handy” No pun intended - honestly!)
Sometimes when you’re running with swells on your beam you can put up your main and trim it just off center line to give you a heel on one side or the other.
Ripening gas from bananas, apples and mangos lead to decay and desiccation of other fruits. If possible keep them at a separate place.
Pro tip!
but also useful if the fruit you buy in the supermarket is under-ripe
Your boat is gorgeous You guys are so competent gives me hope for humanity.
Well, a few words to learn in Dutch : goedemorgen -good morning, bedank -thank you, alles goed? / hoe gaat het met jou? - how are you? Money heist is better in Spanish. I speak spanish and the translation in english is not the best on Netflix.
New to the channel and I already love it. Very interesting video from the start to the end. I enjoyed it very much, every secound of it. All the frames and shots well balanced and kept me asking for more. Love the energy, expresions and all the story line. Nice job here. Cant wait for more. Definitely I will look at the previouse once to know you better. Good luck in the foreseeable future. Thx, I felt that as well spent time :) See you next time.
Went back to watch the first few steps again. We are so impressed with the changes you made to the boaf
The Fallen Vegetables! Sounds almost Biblical! How is the new Electro Beek charging batteries ?
So happy to see you doing what you two were meant to do. The down time was very productive, but now time to live in the wind. You deserve it.
Actually Kika the UK was never a Schengen visa country. It was part of the EU so EU citizens had the right to travel live and work in the UK but that is not the same thing.
Hiiii Kika and Dan! I started watching your videos about 2 weeks ago and binged them all up to this current video tbh. I have loved to see y’all’s journey from the start, the process of fixing your beautiful boat, everything you all have over come and seen over the past few years. Every step was always so informative yet entertaining and I really felt there at times. I love your boat project videos the most for some reason, I just love seeing the smart ideas and concepts y’all come up with! To see y’all’s relationship grow and become such a solid team, I love it! Each video the editing gets better and better too, Im in shock every time. My boyfriend and I are so inspired by you and a few others that we plan to take up boat living and full time sailing in a few years. Thanks so much for sharing and posting your journey! Cheers!
