Hihi, I have the same thing. At the moment I couldn't understand really much of the beginner part. But when I learned Korean some time a go I was also very inconsistent and couldn't clasify myself either as a beginner. I could understand most thing, but still couldn't use the right grammar points or said things wrong XD

@@azukacharity2697 You just have to practice diligently. I'll list a few of my own resources, but you should pick what works for you after testing your options out.
Total beginner: Learn hangul first and avoid romanization when learning
      - RUclips videos to learn to read hangul (the Korean alphabet)
      - I bought a book ("The Little Prince") in Korean and used that to slowly read. I wasn't good at all at the beginning, but now my reading level is a lot faster even if I don't have the vocabulary bank to understand a majority of the novel. This totally isn't necessary, but I really wanted to be able to read quickly.
      - Another option besides books to practice reading is using RUclips! I used to love watching Running Man, so I would watch episodes and since Korean shows often put sentences and words on the screen, I would practice reading those.
      Beginner to Intermediate:
      - TTMIK - the books are my go-to, but I also use their youtube videos and podcasts
      - Go Billy - he has a whole playlist of beginner words and grammar tips. I've recently been working my way through that beginner playlist despite knowing a lot of the material by now. It's a good refresher even for intermediate learners, anyways.
      - How To Study Korean - this website is THICK with information and gives you vocabulary to study, as well. It's a very good resource that has quizzes and unit tests all for free. I use this and TTMIK's stuff most often for my own studies.
      - Movies/Dramas/Music - I mostly use these to just listen to the language as many shows don't use natural Korean. Variety shows are better to use for natural Korean, but they are also spoken at a faster rate.
I'm somewhere between upper beginner and intermediate as I'm able to get the gist of the story in Intermediate level but there are a few terms I'm not familiar with. There's a lot I don't know, but considering I'm self-studying between functioning as a working adult, I'm doing okay. If you can find a study group, that's great; but it's also totally doable on your own. You just have to put forth time and effort. Don't be afraid of talking aloud to yourself or trying to form sentences. Mistakes are okay, too. I often try to talk to myself as practice and end up a grammar mess, but it's the effort that will eventually help my fluency. Good luck!! :)

I feel like the advanced was easier to understand than the intermediate; the filler words and some expressions sounded more natural at the advanced level so it felt more natural to listen to and easier to understand.
Also, THANK YOUUU! These are really helpful because it is hard to practice listening without being in Korea or having Korean friends!

The funny thing is now understanding the advanced level is so much more easier than understanding the beginner level. Because in the beginner they speak in a very formal way, like very rigid, but the advanced sounds way more natural and makes it easier to understand
TTMIK good job! Also, that man was indeed very cool

What are your resources if you don't mind sharing? I can understand the intermediate level but there are still terms I don't know within there. I use TTMIK, How To Study Korean, Go Billy, and Korean novels/games as learning tools, but I'd like advice from more advanced learners.

    • @oumi1224
      @oumi1224 2 года назад +5

@@OfficialAwkbe you’re already using great ressources!
Since you’re already intermediate I would advise you to learn grammar from « Korean grammar in use intermediate » also maybe look at the beginner one and see if there are some grammar points that you didn’t know
Then I would advise you to study vocab from « 2000most common Korean words: beginner », then intermediate
Those are excellent books because they give you words that are actually used
However my biggest advise would be to listen as much as you can, so go on RUclips, find Korean you tubers and try listening to them
If it’s too hard, put on the Korean subtitles (never English!!!), even if you don’t understand everything it will be very helpful !

wow, Intermediate was much easier than I expected; I only missed the odd word here and there. I also think the advanced level was much easier than the everyday Korean I hear most days when I'm hanging out with my Korean friends. Also, I think my comprehension was scaffolded from having heard the same story at the relatively easy intermediate level. Anyway, this was a VERY cool experience.

This was so much fun!! :) What a cool idea... I think I understand 'Intermediate' level the best, but the few parts/words I couldn't understand in it, I understood in the 'Advanced' level version! XD
It would be really cool if you could do longer videos like this, but with breaking down the individual grammar & vocabulary points for each level! (I can understand the sentences when I hear them, but struggle at putting them together myself 😭😩)
Thanks to all of you for the AMAZING hard work you always put into your content!! Love you guys 🥰🥰 (ooh, and thanks for adding the Korean subtitles too! Very helpful :))

Reading all these comments of people understanding...it's hard not to feel demotivated. I thought I was at a beginner level but my vocabulary is nowhere near this 😔 I know I need to put a lot more effort into actively learning Korean, and I am proud of my progress, but woah...this video put into perspective just how FAR I have to go.
I wasn't going to leave a comment but I thought someone else might find it comforting. I was a little overwhelmed by everyone saying how well they understood. You're not alone if you really struggled 😂💚

@@youknowbts5838 this is a such a sweet, encouraging reply. Thank you so much 😭 Yes, I use flashcards and they're very helpful for remembering! I think I'm just not necessarily always learning the right things. I don't have a lot of structure to my studying and think I need to get back to working with my TTMIK book.
Wow...as a native English speaker, Korean grammar feels very different 😂 It's fun though! I love conjugating verbs haha.
Thank you so much again! This is my first time learning a new language properly and I guess I just need to keep going! 화이팅 💜 (I'm Army too btw!)

( maybe I wouldn’t have understood a lot if I didn’t know part 1 and 2 🤔) It was like puzzle coming together through the 3 parts. Anyone else had that experience?

The fact that I had completed Korean to an advanced level in university (not in Korea, in Australia, highly don't recommend*) before, but was inconsistent with practice over the last 2 years has made me sad that I had forgotten a lot of Korean when I was conversing with some Korean friends recently. But after listening to this video I'm surprised I understood 95% of what was going on. I do know that I'm weak at forming sentences and that listening and speaking are completely different. BUT THIS GIVES ME THE MOTIVATION TO BE MORE CONSISTENT AND REACH A BETTER FLUENCY THIS YEAR ❤️✨
~* I recommend getting a private tutor or joining classes over tertiary learning for languages based on my own experiences

I was really confident in myself when I saw this, I thought that beginner and intermediate were going to be easy enough for me to understand with my level at the moment.
I feel so disappointed now because I barely understood the beginner's part.
Not because I didn't get the words said, but because I wasn't able to elaborate de entire sentences correctly in my head, so I got lost and confused very quickly.
Well, I need to keep studying and listening, I guess.

    TRANSLATION
    Beginner
Dahye was going to work, but someone was saying 'Cherry! Cherry!' Dahye was surprised. Dahye thought, 'What's going on? Who is Cherry?' Dahye looked to the side. A girl was running fast. In front of the girl was a very big dog that was running fast. The girl was following the dog. Cherry was the name of that dog. Cherry was going onto the road. There were also many cars. It was very dangerous. Then, a man went to Cherry. The man held Cherry and waited for the girl. The girl came. The girl said, 'Thank you, thank you!" and took Cherry. Dahye thought, 'Wow, that man is cool.' Dahye arrived at work, and told this story to her Talk To Me In Korean peers. Seunghwan also arrived at work. Seunghwan said, 'Wow! I just caught a big dog on the road.'
    Intermediate
This was a few months ago. Dahye was going to work, but someone was shouting 'Cherry! Cherry!' on the street. Dahye was really surprised. 'Who is Cherry?', she thought as she looked to the side, and some girl was running, and in front of the girl was a big dog. It seemed like Cherry was the dog's name. Cherry was excited and was running on the road. It ran between cars. The girl, who saw this, was so surprised that she was about to cry. Then, a man who was passing by stopped, and went near Cherry and waited. Cherry went to the man and the man held Cherry. During that time, the girl went to Cherry, and safely took Cherry away. She also thanked the man. Dahye, who saw this, thought the man was really cool. Dahye arrived at work, and told this story to her Talk To Me In Korean peers. Everyone found the story interesting/fun. Then, Seunghwan also arrived at work, and Seunghwan said, 'Wow! I just some dog that was escaping.'
    Advanced
This is a real incident that happened to Dahye while going to work a while ago. Dahye was walking on the street, but someone was suddenly shouting 'Cherry! Cherry!'. Dahye was really surprised and thought, 'What? Who is Cherry? What is this?' while scanning her surroundings. Then, some girl was running really fast, and in front of her was a big dog that was excitedly running to and fro on the road. Wow, but cars were passing by and seemed really dangerous. Dahye also wanted to help but it was took dangerous and scary so she just anxiously stood there. The girl was in a panicked state and was about to cry. Then, a man who was walking in front of Cherry saw the situation and stopped in his tracks and waited for Cherry. He waited for Cherry to come to him and then held Cherry tight. Seeing that, the girl ran to them and put the leash on Cherry, and kept thanking the man. Dahye thought that man was really amazing, and Dahye arrived at the office and told people about this story. Everyone listened with fascination and thought the man was really cool. After that, Seunghwan also arrived at work, and Seunghwan said this. "Wow, I just caught some big dog that escaped on the road."

The advanced version is much more easier to comprehend than the other 2. The nuance, the way of talking and sentence endings that are usually used in daily conversation make me quickly get into the story while that in the beginner level was quite scattered.
