Feats and Badges! | How To Survive The Long Dark

  • Feats are a reward given to the player in The Long Dark for reaching a milestone, such as spending 100 days outdoors. These feats, also known as badges, grant the player some bonuses and boosts to make surviving a little bit easier! However, not all feats are created equal, and there are limitations to how many you can apply to your run at any given time. Feats are very important especially at the higher difficulties and their bonuses can be critical for survival. It's important to take the pros and cons of each feat into consideration before applying it to make sure that it meshes with your playstyle and will give you the best chances of surviving.

    Blizzard walker will be the feat I get first, not because I will try to explore during a blizzards, it's because I will get caught in a blizzard unknowingly, and trying to find some place safe, lol.

    I find it a bit odd, that by the time that you start unlocking feats (at least 100 hrs /played time). You wont really need them any more.I feel like there should be some sort of gameplay reward for choosing to not use them, since by the time you Can use them. Great tips for early game ease of use. However, I tend to acquire as much benefits for the long run so my opinions are complete opposite of yours. Efficient Machine and Cold Fusion are my go-to feats for Interloper. You will have consumed far less food than you would normally need with Efficient Machine and will continue to give you the need for less for the rest of your life. You will have consumed much less calories over time. Cold Fusion allows you to struggle to juggle less on your outfits as you often have to sacrifice mobility over warmth. You can simply set your deer skin boots aside to use your running shoes when you need to run to the other end of the map for something you forgot and will require less time stopping to warm up by the fire for long hauls. And there's less risk of sleeping outdoors, not completely but it's something to keep in mind. Bedroll gives you +5C use warmth while you have +2C.
    Fire Master is DEFINITELY awesome, I won't argue with you there. Though you can always carry a spare torch to start fires with one match guaranteed. Each time I over use fire wood, I always grab torches from camp fires then harvest the lesser ones and keep one good spare. Also if you can't light a torch outside, you know it's not a good time to start a camp fire. You will reach level 3 fire starting skill by a month in game (but I'm sure most are not patient enough to reach level 5 by then). But if you do manage to have survived for months in game, that feat becomes obsolete. Trapping skill... By the time you've got enough cured guts to move passed making clothes, you will likely have forged your tools, bow and arrows by then so 450 calories per catch as opposed to thousands... But still guaranteed trapped rabbits does give you more piece of mind. But, really, trapping rabbits is more of a spare catch rather than being your main source of food if you hunt.
    I've never used Snow Walker and Free Runner in Interloper. But I do use Free Runner in Stalker. Those are more for the impatient. But also useful for when you climb to the top of Timberwolf Mountain.
    I agree with you completely with Book Smarts. Sure I do make use of it, but for a wee little gain, it's pointless. Also it becomes obsolete once you've mastered all your skills.
    I haven't unlocked Blizzard Walker but for goodness sake it'd be so damn useful. The wind is designed to blow against you (really dumb mechanic). If you were to start walking in one direction the wind WILL adjust so that it blows against you. If you change your route, it'll shift against you. If you turn around and start running back, the wind WILL do a complete 180 in seconds... That's just really stupid in my opinion. I cringed so much when I saw "make climate colder over time" in custom settings. Seriously! How pathetic is that??
    These are my opinion, really. But I really appreciate the content you make, Lonelywolf. Keep em coming!

    • @FFgamesftw

      Is that just paranoia or is there actually some coding that makes sure the wind blows in the direction you are heading? I figured it was just me imagining things and I was getting unlucky.

    I personally think Fire Master isn't all that great and I'll explain why.
    What Benefits does being Level 3 Fire Starting (or also getting level 4/5 faster) give?
    1. Removes need for tender
    2. Increases chance to start a fire
    3. Increases fire duration
    How much time am I saving vs getting to level 3 normally?
    70 skill points to get to level 3 or 70 saved out of the 370 needed to get to level 5
    So the reason why these perks aren't that great
    1. Once you hit level 5 normally you no longer gain any benefit from the skill.
    2. Tender has absolutely no other uses outside of starting fires so all you do is save some carry weight early on
    3. Chance to start a fire doesn't matter as you only use 1 match if you light a torch and use that to start your fires. The loss of tender doesn't matters as you'll still have plenty of tender left in the world by the time you hit rank 3 (birch bark spawns infinitely so you never can be stuck without tender but you shouldn't be so unlucky that you have to rely on this)
    So the only real benefits you are getting is longer fire duration (until you make up those extra 70 skill points) and not needing to carry tender around. Fire duration isn't super important either as fuel for fires is renewable and you can collect as much coal, firewood, and sticks as you want.
    TLDR I much prefer a skill that is good long term and not just for the early part of a run.

    Even later in the game Cold Fusion can be the difference between two or three arrows down. Or two and one. Which greatly increases the time you can spend outside before starting to freeze.
    I don't see the Fire Master hype though. It's the perfect example of a feat that's only useful early game. You level up firestarting quickly. And early on you can use accelerant and books to boost your chances. I guess it means the XP you get goes towards higher levels right away, but that's it.

    • @FFgamesftw
      @FFgamesftw 2 года назад

      Even then the only real benefit people think of for it is "if I don't fail I won't be using as many matches so my matches will last longer"
      However this is because most people don't know the trick of using a match to light a torch on fire and then even if you fail with using the torch as your starter you don't lose the torch. So you can keep using that same torch to try to light your fire until you get it. You are still losing the tender but since tender isn't useful outside of early fire starting that's not a concern.

      Depends on the experience mode. I play pretty much just Interloper and, IMHO, the two best feats are Cold Fusion (really good early and still good later) and Master Trapper (really good for the long run). Book Smart and Fire Master are pretty much useless after the first 20 days, as you'll train the skills as you play and you can pretty much train Fire Starting with the mag lens and a bunch of sticks in a sunny day. Efficient Machine is debatable, but probably just bad, as you'll just be starving most of the days. Free Runner I find even worse than Efficient Machine, as you mostly walk everywhere in Interloper. The rest are pretty much just not worth it, as they are either very situational or provide really low bonuses.

  • @afqwa423
    @afqwa423 2 года назад

    I recently learnt a trick to save matches, which is that you just use your matches to light a torch, then use the torch itself to light your fires. If you fail, you can try again with the lit torch. Combined with this and the ability to daisy-chain fires (or walk around the map lighting little stick fires), Firestarter doesn't really seem that useful since you'll be grinding to level 3 in pretty short order.

    i think for interloper best are cold fusion and the +20% stamina because you need to run a lot to escape the cold and reduce fatighe. for stalker cold fusion again and bookexpert because you need to increase firearms without shooting and probably -10% calories because its easier to maintain wellfed. fire skill is easy to level just by lightining fires by tortch when you have a fire going and nothing else to do. expert trapper is not good i think because you can always deploy 2X snares and going against the wind is somewhat rare, lets say 1 time to 8. -25% calories when sprinting requires that you have calories to burn and fatighe to spear so i think its crap

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  3 года назад +1

      All depends on your playstyle and the things you commonly struggle with or use often. While seam feats are pretty objectively better (cold fusion, etc.) some are ones that could be super beneficial, or only marginally so, depending on how you play.

    Hey!
    What are your thoughts on how difficulties could be changed? I feel removing items, such as certain tools in interloper that don't spawn, should still be present. It doesn't feel realistic, small towns in the mountain should have plenty. I feel changing animal behavior could be an option to set difficulties apart. Such as adding an ability for them to track your movements better, follow you home, alter their patrol paths based on your movement, alert more wolves via howl (normal wolves) or even scare all other wild life away for a short period, forcing to move further away to hunt.
    Maybe you could do a video on difficulty, how they differ, how it changes game play option, long term planning for each and how you feel about each type, like or don't like, how you would change them.
    Keep up the great work, I enjoy your videos a lot.
    One last thing I feel the game needs, maybe you share my opinion. Why can't you move more objects, example; I'm in pleasant valley farm house, I can see the drawers that are missing from a dresser, why can i not put them back in and not make more storage! Not cool Hinter lands. Or move dishes off counter top, just nit picking, should be able to move all object/furniture IMO.
    Cheers

    Does anyone know the calculation or algorithm for cabin fever? Like if you spend 10 hours indoors does that equal one hour toward the cabin fever risk? I thought i had it figured out but I was wrong. And is it more prevalent in the harder levels?

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  4 года назад +1

      It varies depending on your experience mode. I can't remember if it's tuned to a higher standard on the higher experience modes but intuition says no... Anyway, it calculates the time spent indoors vs outdoors over a rolling six day period. So as long as you spend about 2 full days outside every six, you should be fine. The way it calculates over a 6 day period is why, once you notice the risk and start staying outside, the risk can go up, because you've not yet had your time spent outdoors contribute to the calculation.
      Overall its a bit tricky to track and stay on top of if you're not paying attention, but as long as you make an effort to spend at least some time outdoors every day it's usually not a problem.
