I knew I recognised this guys voice lol, it's Mr Collings, I used to race against his son Matthew in karting
Thank you gentemen from a lover of aviation for 60 years i live for it
The approach into Edinburgh over the bridges is one of the best ever! I moved from Scotland to Spain 12 years ago and that approach gets me every time...
Lozibiza resident I live 40min from Edinburgh. I thought we were going to hit the fourth rd bridge 😂
@@146shell do you mean forth rail bridge ?
@@livelongandprosper70 both lol
ATC are an amazing service. During PPL I was at a Class G cutout of Class C Airspace in Long Island, NY. For all X-C flights I called up Clearance Delivery on the ground and requested a Class C Transition, which got me higher than 1500 over the bay to Fire Island, NY. Each X-C flight I had flight following as well.
Nice video! Was interesting to see the way the controlled airspace around Leuchars was marked. Of course, the circles, which were not mentioned, are Torness Nuclear Power Station, Rosyth Naval Dockyard and The Scottish Parliament.
thanks!
Very hard and stressing job. Congratulations from Senegal.
Thanks Diop, glad you enjoyed the video!
Great respect to ATC… HIGHLY SKILLED JOB…and very important… Plenty training required …✊
Thanks for the great video! Nice to see how they roll in Edinburgh 🛫🛬 My home country carrier Finnair spotted!!!
Sometimes most student pilots find it stressful to speak with ATC in the beginning. It's great to see that they are actually pretty chill and professional
You make a very good point! ATC in my experience has always been a helpful bunch
Great video seeing workings of ATC
Very informative for me as a low hours GA pilot.
Some amazing video here and especially to have airside tower access, great video 📷 I'll certainly be subscribing
Excellent stuff, thank you. I used to fly GA out of Edinburgh back in the day, so it was great to see the systems now. The Glasgow crash the ATC Officer referenced was my ex-CFI - very tragic.
thanks Andy, i'm glad you enjoyed watching the video. Tragic story indeed regarding the crash.
What an excellent and informative video about ATC, a topic which could do with so much more coverage here on youtube, it's fascinating.
thanks Cyka!
Very interesting video. Thanks for some very useful information.
What a fantastic insight into my local airport! Very educational and enjoyable. Thanks for making the video and thanks also to all who helped contribute to it. 👍
Thanks Noyon, i'm glad you found it insightful!
Awesome, thanks for this!
Great video. Changed a lot since I last visited the Edinburgh ATC about 20 years when they were based in the old tower over on the other side of the airfield.
Paul McConnon that tower now sits derelict. Sad sight.
@@nortonchow3286 Is it protected in some way? I saw a post on Lost Edinburgh recently about the sign at the entrance to RAF Turnhouse and someone asking if it was to be saved. I dont live in Edinburgh so havent been on that side for a while to see the changes. Need to make a point of driving by the next time.
It’s not protected. Actually it’s getting demolished very shortly.
This is excellent thank you very much for such an in-depth video on the working environments of an air traffic controller.
thanks very much, i'm very glad you enjoyed watching it!
Very nice to learn from your video, great one!
Great info many thanks.
I had G-BIIT into EGET as FISO once waay back in the day. :)
The last time I was in the NATS Cabin at Hack Green was 1962, watching this video brought much of it back. Yes, technology has changed, back then servicing controller's consoles was a pain whereas now the reliability must be 100 times better. Liked the electronic paper strips, what was missing was the card school, has the technology changed for that?
Really insightful stuff there, thanks!
Thanks very much Alan, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Hopeful trainee here. Thank you for this video!
Thanks Christopher, hopefully the video gave you some useful insights into your potential future job!
Thank you! Wonderful show! Cheers!
Thanks Tom!
This is the video I needed
Superb video. The controllers were very helpful to me giving me a transit when I flew Barton to Fife but I will call ahead next time to make the strip completion job easier.
Thanks I'm glad you learned a thing or two!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Neil I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome!
UK ATC The Ultimate in professionalism!
Cool, very interesting.
That was really interesting.
An enlightening video - Cheers for that.
I'm looking forward to my first zone transit... and it will probably be EGPH, too as I'm training up at Perth..
Now I know to call them on the landline before I take off to make life easier for them.
that's fantastic, and yes make sure to call ahead, will make everyone's life easier, and your first transit less stressful! Happy flying!
@@Boeing100aviation - It’s a year since I made that comment. I transit EGPH quite frequently, now, and I always call them on the phone prior to takeoff. If I get into the air and, for one reason or another (usually weather-related), I decide not to progress with my transit, I always call them and inform them of my change of intentions so that they can cancel my request from their system.
They’re always helpful and accommodating, even when I ask them for a couple of orbits of Arthur’s Seat for my passengers.
@@RoadRunnerLaser glad to hear it's made an impact to your flight prep! Everyone's life is made so much easier if people pre-note the tower with a quick phone call when transiting.
Very informative, nice one.
thank you, i'm glad you found it useful!
Cool video 👍🏻
You might hear me routing down the Fife coast to enter at Kirkcaldy for a trip over the bridges in G-GBVX. My RT is crap. Imagine a Kelty lad with a pilots licence.
“Awrite Edinburgh its me ken, can a come into your big circle thingy”
Nah this is a great insight into the ATC world down there. I probably spoke to this controller many times and I bet he rolled his eyes when I stepped on everyones transmissions .
Thanks Arthur, hopefully you now have a better understanding of what's on the other side of the RT at Edinburgh :)
The silent heros.
good video
Very interesting
I road of these 'beasts' from Jeddah KSA to Cairo Egypt sitting behind the pilots at their doorway back in 1983! Bet no one today can do that!
a d godbee and thankfully nobody can
Often delta delta or Lima tango out of Perth going via Hermiston, Hillend. Shoring our at mussl’brgh. Very useful video. I know that voice. Always very accommodating but I am very keen to be more accommodating to you guys.!i will now always try to not free call. EDI free call are always very helpful and if we as GA’ers can help then we should! As a recent newby that you have helped out a lot - THANKYOU!! Great vid!!!! WHat would be the call if I have already called in??
Great! That's what we hoped would be the key message for GA pilots: learn the workflow for ATC and understand the importance of calling up ahead to reduce workload. On you're first call, you can just say something along the lines of "Edinburgh Radar, G-BIIT request zone transit, you should have our details". Have a look at my glasgow transit video on my channel, I use similar phraseology. Though they would check anyways, it's their queue to press the "active" box per the video and they'll find your flight strip. Happy flying!
Sounds like a good Teesside lad as well.
Clever guys doing clever things to keep air travel safe.
6:26 - Pilot: File ahead!!
What is the 'pan handle' he mentions?
On this chart....
www.clanlawrence.co.uk/images/EGPH_CTR.pdf
That "Panhandles" are the sections of controlled airspace labelled "CTA-1" and "CTA-2". Basically the extended sections aligned with the main runway to the SW and NE.
I'd like to know how from BEE3DH they got Jersey3Hotel?
Alan Wylde BEE is the airline code for Flybe, and the call sign for flybee is “Jersey”. Delta is phonetic for D and Hotel for H.
@@123sebarn lovely thank you for that. Yeah I know the Phonetics just confused how BEE or Flybe got translated to Jersey lol .
@@alanwylde187 FlyBE started in 1979 as "Jersey European Airways", it was then renamed "British European" in 2000 and then "FlyBE" in 2002. RIP :(
And I thought my job was difficult!
Could you tell me
How much the course is
How long it takes
Minimum school and health requirements
Salary thanks
Edinburgh ATC is operated by National Air Traffic Service (NATS) so apply through them OR if you look up Global ATS, they are an independent college in the southwest of England that train future and current controllers through the relevant licences.
The course length as it varies depending who you go with. I would say 18 months college work then on the job-training a further 18 months.
School requirements in the UK is 5 GCSE’s. I’m not familiar with Scottish grades, probably the same so worth looking up. Health requirements is good health in general, good eyesight for one.
And finally, the salary could again vary from £30k - 80k+ I’m not sure but I do know if you’re a radar controller in Prestwick or Swanwick you could potentially look at six figures salary.
Hope this helps.
@@Longbyname ohhh thanks for that information man really appreciate it how much is the independent global ats course cuz with NATS it's free and can I become a atc if I wear glasses every day
Edinburgh ATC is actually operated by Air Navigation Solutions rather than NATS. I cant imagine that their course would be fundamentally different though!
@@Boeing100aviation how much is the course and how do u go about it thanks
@@deonogorman928 I would suggest you Google their website Deon, they will have all the information you need there.

Airport still should be called Turnhouse
Who? 😅
That was the original name RAF Turnhouse. City changed the name circa late 1980s presumably to give it an international flair. BORING!!
I still and always will call it Turnhoose 😁
Mikey D yeah. There are still two of us using the correct name
I might try to be an ATC at my local airport. It's a small one.
Small can be fun! I hope this video inspired you a bit.
@@Boeing100aviation it definitely did. Awesome video!
What airport is it?

Is there a Ryanair Cargo
Hi Gordon, no, as far as I'm aware Ryanair does not operate cargo flights.
Ok
It's a very logical explanation, yet one can hear why accents can be misinterpreted on the radio.
