  • After their success in North Africa, the Allies were ready to return to occupied Europe, landing first in Sicily before moving north on mainland Italy under the command of Montgomery, affectionately known to his men as of Monty. But as the Italians surrendered, the Germans occupied Rome, making the battle for Italy a long and difficult road, while plans to invade northern France took shape.

Although I can see the strategic reasons Roosevelt/US wanted to appease Russia, probably shoulda listened to Churchill and try to limit the extent they would occupy eastern Europe. In the end 100s of millions of Europeans lost the freedom the Allies were supposedly fighting for on their behalf. But hindsight is 20-20.

The attack on Italy was a horrendous mistake. Many war documentaries try to justify the invasion of Sicily and Italy. What Churchill called the soft underbelly. Throughout military history attacking armies avoid fighting in the mountains, because attacking uphill gives defenders an overwhelming advantage. Such was the case at Monte Cassino (a tall hill when compared to the Alps of Northern Italy). Allied forces were repeatedly wiped out by a relatively small number of German paratroopers at Monte Cassino. It took months of fighting and a shocking casualty rate before Ally forces finally took Monte Cassino. Italy is filled with mountainous terrain and the Northern border of Italy is surrounded by the Italian Alps which rose well over 10,000 feet in height. Considering what had happened at Monte Cassino the entire Ally armies combined could not have crossed over the Alps and into Germany, France, or Eastern Europe. Such is the nonsense of the so called soft underbelly. Churchill and the British High Command position cost valuable time, resources, and men fighting for the hopeless dead end of Italy. This grave error gave Stalin and the Red Army the opportunity to control all of Eastern Europe. Yet we hear the British complain that Roosevelt, Marshall, and Eisenhower gave Eastern Europe to Stalin. In reality it is was Churchill and his misadventures in Italy which cost Eastern Europe years of Communist oppression.
Churchill made the same mistake in WWI as Lord of the Admiralty when he wanted to attack the Turks at Gallipoli. Churchill used the same soft underbelly argument. He reasoned that the Turks were weak and easy to defeat. So he demanded an amphibious landing at Gallipoli in hopes of taking Constantinople. Despite objections from high ranking British officers of the army and navy Churchill got his way. The only problem was Mustafa Kamal and the Ottoman Janissaries would pin down the British forces on the beaches. After fighting for several months and appalling losses the British withdrew. The British press praised Churchill's leadership because not one soldier was killed during the retreat. Even though British Commonwealth soldiers killed during the invasion was enormous. The problem with Churchill is that he is not a competent military leader. Churchill is a brilliant politician. He makes decisions for political reasons like a quick, easy win against the incompetent Turks. What actually happened was countless Commonwealth foot soldiers paid with their lives.
