  • In this video I give the Marshall Code 50 a third go. I was given the helpful tip that Johan Segerborn had managed to get the Code to sound EXACTLY like a Marshall Plexi in one of his videos. So I watched Johan's video and decided to see if my Code could sound like a Plexi.
    This video is actually quite old. I originally didn't upload it, but in the end I decided to do it anyway. Hope you enjoy!

    Picked up a code 50, actually liked it. Got some good tones for a practice amp (getting away from presets and using the less is more method).
    But out of nowhere it started making a horrible scratchy sound, even with the guitar volume off. Tried other guitars etc.
    Then started losing Bluetooth connection sporadically.
    luckily I was within return period.
    Given all the negative reviews I see (including one about fixing the scratching sound lol), I’m just going with a different amp.
    Great review series.

    One can fiddle with the guitar tone knobs when running through a Plexi, but it's not because one HAS to in order to get good tone, it's just because one can find more sweet spots on it by doing so...not a necessity, but a color-maker there.
    Screw the haters. I like your channel. Fun to watch.

    Great video, mate! 👍 One of the few reviewers who calls a pile of crap a pile of crap.
    People, don't buy cheap amps and believe they are great. They are not. They are great to play a little in the kitchen at very low volume. That's what they do best, and what they should be used for. If you want to sound decent, you'll have to spend from 800€ upwards.

  • @CristianoLionHeart
    @CristianoLionHeart 5 лет назад +5

    Elmo, you shouldn't even give attention to such a comment. I've got a Code 50, I use it to study at home, It does the job, but there's no comparison with the professional one. It's just a study amp with effects so you don't have to use your pedalboard ALL the time. It's good because you play the backing track via Bluetooth, and if you bust It, you don't really care.

  • @SixShine
    @SixShine 5 лет назад +10

    Yes, that sounded awful. Despite the negative reviews I went out and bought a code. And a katana. After a few weeks of playing with them I lean towards the code...I haven't got it to sound this bad yet, but I will say that there's only a couple of pre amps I use on it, and only 2 power amps. No cab modeling and the high end on the code is tremendously out of wack, but I get a couple of tones a absolutely love. The Katana? I get several tones I like a lot, but the big thing is this: I have access to more control on the code than the katana without tethering to a computer. Of course I'm not using either of them for professional use, and they are both kept pretty low on volume, probably half volume is the max. I feel that the reason some people just hate this amp is that they were expecting it to be as advertised. It's not. The code is not a Marshall tube amp, and it will not sound like one. We just heard what happens if you try to make it sound like one. If, however, you treat it like a solid state amp with options and just try to dial in a tone you like, it works fine... For practice. No extension cab port, no effects loop, your summation of toy is pretty much spot on, and I bought it expecting as much. As I said, I do enjoy a couple of tones I get out of it a great deal, but really that's where it ends. So I'm left wondering, is an amp for around this price worth it for just a couple of tones? To me it is, but to most it's probably not. You can get far more out of the Katana but you MUST connect it to a PC.
    Tldr: the code CAN have a great tone! Just not a Marshall one, and for the price a Katana is a better value overall, despite mandatory PC tethering for most stuff.

      Yeah, the JTM45 model is good, JVM model is spot on (I connected my JVM 410h preamp to marshall code once to compare). The plexi model is bad and I never use it. JCM800 model is good, has the feel, but requires od to hide the dogital. Silver Jubilee model is also good. The preamp sims are good but power amp and speaker modelling sucks. Also the speaker is not very good.

    Hello Johan I've been watching your code 50 critic. They are enjoyable and you should do a fourth video. I bought the amp and just like you I've had a love/hate relationship with it. I to have heard very clanky high trebaly sounds, but on the other hand heard some good stuff. I own a jam Jr with dark matter 2 pickups and it sounds pretty good, sounds good with Las Paul's. The fender guitars sound shrilly defiantly have to play with tone on some. The videos are entertaining and I say you do some more.

    • @jimsimmons2674

      Kevin i agree,i have the code 25 and 50 but it seems there is something wrong with the code 50 elmo had,it did really sound bad,i think he may have had a defective speaker in his amp?That being said the code 50 on it's own needs some help to sound better,some amp models have too much low end even with the bass and resonance controls all the way down,this is why the amp can fart out.I forgot to mension you need to do a firmware update before you use your code amp this can solve some of it's problems like my code 50 used to freeze up sometimes when editing or changing presets.
      I use a behringer TO100 or TO800 tube screamer overdrive in front of the amp and it filters out a lot of the low end mud that can fart out the amps speaker and also the overdrive pedal improves the tone of the bluesbreaker amp model plus many other models on the code 50,i also tried a behringer PB100 preamp boost pedal that has bass,treble and gain controls,with the bass knob turned down to about 8:00 it also filtered out the low end mud and made the code sound much better but what really made my code 50 sound good was when i put a 1/4" output speaker jack in the back of the amp and when pluged in it mutes the internal speaker,the cable then goes to my marshall 4x12 1960 cab,it is a nite and day difference in the tone of this amp!
      I like my code 25 better when compared to the 50(with internal speakers on both amps) for lower volumes and bedroom practice but even at louder volumes the code 25 is a little smoother sounding in the high end(less harsh sounding to me),you can hear the speakers are voiced different in both of these amps,so out of the box i can see how elmo would not like the code 50 without a update and also some amp tweaks.

      This amp DOES sound great. You just have to have functioning brain cells. So many idiots with a million subscribers on you tube have given bad reviews on this amp. All while completely acting like a literal 5 year old. But yet they all drool over the 3000 dollar Kemper which is way way more complicated. It's made me realize all these YT personalities get paid too lie to you for money just like the scumbags on TV. Here buy this 3000 dollar Kemper you won't understand how to use and this 2000 dollar cabinet just to get making sound. Johan is playing a Les Paul in the video. So my question is if you are trying to mimic his tone using the same settings why not use the same type of guitar. A les paul with humbuckers will usually push into distortion with a thicker darker tone than a strat. Unless you do the Eddie thing and stick a humbucker in bridge position

    Is the Plexi going through a 4x12 cab and the Code through the internal speaker? If so, the result is obvious.
    Also, the Code sounds good in Segeborns video, but sounds bad here. The settings are the same, so it has to be the speakers and/or mike placement.

  • @ebatgmail
    @ebatgmail 6 месяцев назад

    Johan was demoing a 25w, Elmo is demoing a 50w.
    The speaker inside is the same but the cab isn't and we know how much important is the matching of the cabinet's dimensions with the speaker's characteristics (Thiele-Small parameters).
    This is I guess the main issue of Code50.
    Furthermore Johan is using a Les Paul, Elmo is using a Strat. 😎

    No contest - the code really is that bad, nasty and clipped. I recently posted in a comment that I bought a second hand Line 6 Spider IV 75 watt amp and like the Code it is way to complicated for it's own good (although it can be made to sound brilliant with a lot of effort). I guess I am an analogue player in a digital world and like a young person with a mobile phone running rings around me I will have to just stick to my old Nokia style amps :-) .

    At 10:25. "The videos had to do with his BBQ"!!! HAHA!!! For some reason I thought this comment was hilarious!
    Anyway, I'm 48 and just started playing guitar a year ago. The Code was a great amp for me. Since I'm just starting I don't have "A sound" or "My sound" yet. This amp let me explore a ton of effects without having to buy a ton of pedals. Even if the built in effects aren't perfect. Now I realize I think "My sound" is a little overdrive with delay and reverb. That's what this amp (amp??) is good for. Hopefully my next purchase will be the JCM 800 mini or Silver mini with a delay and reverb pedal. If you already know what "your sound" is, there is no substitute for the real thing. There is no way a $250 amp will get you the same sound as a $2,500 rig.

    For an honest review of this sounding like a plexi this was good. I didn't expect it to sound exactly like a plexi but I honestly though it would have gotten closer than it did but I don't need a CODE because I have the Marshall DSL100HR 😁. Please make a review on the new DSL because there isn't any by anybody I follow.

      @@MrPolevaulter Ok I'll have to check out that video. It's a little confusing but the older DSL 40 and 100 has the half/full power switch on the back the and the newer DSL's have it on the front in the standby switch plus two independent master volumes that are assignable to the clean, crunch, od1, and od2 channel's. I love the 100hr but od2 randomly sounds wierd like it's getting trying to overdrive itself too much or something and I've tried playing with the settings, re-biasing, and then replaced the tubes but it still does it but not quite as bad. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or mine is possibly defective.

    I have a code 50. There are only a couple of presets that I find pleasant. 95 with the delay turned down a bit, and 10. All of the other presets sound like shit, with blurred tone. The distortion isint the sound I am looking for. Other than that the amp only sounds good clean. I am opting for another Marshall, but do t know which one to get. I am in the range of 750 USD. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks !

    Elmo! You are the coolest, and thanks to people like you I've been going to bed too late playing A lot more guitar. I have a Code 100 head and run it through a Crate Palomino 2 12 with Celestions. I use Charvels with humbuckers. I at first was very unimpressed with the plexi sounds but have been told by a friend you can totally reform those nasty presets by going into the menu (which I'm lazy at) the reason I decided to keep this amp is the Silver Jubilee, JCM 800, and American overdrive (Mesa?) tones, also JTM 45 and yes Plexi for giving me early Who type sounds. Again I think it is a different cup of tea through a good cabinet, and especially a good 4 12, I mean this Silver Jubilee setting with drive sounds great! So...finally the Code 50 sounds unfortunate....but the 100 with a good cab is nice, Bruce

    @OrangeMicMusic 2 года назад +1

    I'm not trying to defend the Code, sure they don't sound the same. But.....you're comparing a 4x12 cab with Celestion speakers vs a tiny cab with Marshall made speaker. I taught everyone knows that the most of the tone comes from the cab. Tons of videos on RUclips showing that the same tube amp plugged into different cabs would sound totally different. It would have been more like a comparison, plugging in both of them into same Marshall cab and then hear the results. Also, I was curious and watched Johan's video and he's mic'ing the speakers, but you have a microphone far in the room...so I don't really understand what you're trying to do :)))))

    • @MrPolevaulter
      @MrPolevaulter  2 года назад +1

      The idea for this came from Johan Segeborn's video where he says it sounds exactly like a Plexi. So I tried his settings and compared. Did I think they would sound the same? No.

    • @OrangeMicMusic
      @OrangeMicMusic 2 года назад +1

      @@MrPolevaulter Yes, they don't sound the same, and they would never will. My curiosity was, why you're using ambient microphone in the room, instead of a 57 in front.

    Just love it when somebody repeatedly keeps banging their head against a brick wall and don't understand to stop doing it. :) Having said that, I actually own a Code 25 I bought secondhand cheap, and still think it is a reasonably fun toy to tinker with. But only at home, at bedroom sound levels. With a Strat (as I have) you can only make use of the neck pickup, treble turned way down. Turn up the volume, and you don't want to stand in front of the speaker. Perhaps it would work somewhat better with a Les Paul. Fancy doing a fourth video? :)

    I own for years a marshall jcm 800. Great amp. But for years at home i use a differend marshall valvestate v60, and the avt20. I think its an very underated amp. Okay i know it can't compare with the big and beloved plexi's, jcm 800's and bluesbreakers and so on... but still, i love the valvestate! I have the code 100 combo and at first I enjoyed it but now I regret it and I prefer my old valve state, it's not warm enough I'm looking to try to modify it because I think some of the problem is too much vibration with the actual wood box it's in or I want to insulate it more that might give it a more solid sound.

    I have a JTM45 reissue and the 1960AHW, and I have Marshall Code 100 head, seems the 50w doesnt get much good reviews, but 25w and 100w does. I use my code for night practice but found in the 1960AHW it can still get pretty loud, so I got a 1x12 cab and use a G12M and it sounds pretty good, I use TS808 Pedal and sounds good but need to put a bit of gain on amp and less gain on TS, I would gig with my code without hesitation, I believe those code speakers are really cheap and nasty, I have used the Origin 2x12 cab with 70/80 and that sounded good with the code, and I also have a G12H Anniversary speaker that sounds good with code. I think I quickly tried a code 50 in the shop and didnt like it either. Hmm, something to think about.

      Glad to hear it sounds good through the Origin cab, I have a spare Seventy 80 I am going to swap into the Code 50. Many videos also show an improvement by lifting the front of the amp slightly, not sure if it's the cab angle or just getting it off the floor a little that helps. I might try stiffening and/or opening the back a bit too.
