Owned multiple pairs of Aristicrafts from J&M (not handmades) and after 30+ years of wearing I can attest that they are the best made shoes I’ve ever worn. Although I rarely wear them these days, I get excited when I do because they are classics in all sense of the word. I donated six pair to a charity which helps low income individuals dress for job interviews, so I know they will continue to show off their classic styling for more years to come.
I'm an Englishman (whatever that stands for these days.....), but what you say is so true of many aspects of quality in life in both our great nations. England too, was once the epicentre of men's style, and certainly shoemaking! Now, only a small handful of places still exist in the UK who are still dedicated to the quality of their heritage. It's very sad to see such a lack of quality in everything we see nowadays. Makes me wish I was alive in the 50s and 60s, when quality and style were everywhere!!

I worked at J&M for years and had the hardest time finding a pair of Aristicrafts . I'm glad that I looked for them. These here are amazing though. I wish the company would produce this line. Even if it is limited.

Hi Preston, lovely shoes. Are they corrected grain? I’ve had some churches that are CG and I’ve found that type of leather didn’t age as well. What are your thoughts on corrected grain? Cheers!

@@acmehorse this is a tough one. I simply think they’re so rare, I might just keep them as a collection piece or try to sell them to a collector from Japan. There are a lot of guys out there who really love to preserve classic Americana.

Can you guess the year these were made? That spade shape just makes me think of Nucky Thompson on Boardwalk Empire dressed, but that would be a seriously old shoe.

Plenty of quality handmade shoemakers in Western Europe with lots of history. Ps. Ralph Fiennes the actor has a passion for handmade shoes and has apprenticed with some great shoemakers. You may want to check it out and make a video if interested? Great shoe btw.

Such a beautiful piece! Congratulations on finding it. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the history of shoemaking but I guess the market has reacted similarly in Europe as it seems to have done in America. Do you know what (if any) are the signifcant differences at this point?
In Europe, the differences are much smaller. But in the United States, it’s completely different. No company in the USA produces a hand welted or hand lasted issue.

@@TheElegantOxford That is good to know, thank you! I've only recently stumbled into the world of men's fashion and by extension dress shoes so I'm very new to it all. Your channel has been a great window into that world btw. Even if I were American I'd be too young to remember the times when such items would have been available but I've always had a huge appreciation for skilled artisanship. So seeing or hearing that the market seems to be bereft of this high level is quite sad.

It’s impressive. But I understand why it went away. For a large company to make a shoe like this today it would only be to bring Note-oriety and brand recognition. They could never sell enough at a high enough cost to make a real profit.
It is a shame that the quality and longevity (a function of quality) of so many things have been lost in so many products. Seems like most things are a shell of their former selves.
What a beautiful shoe and so sad it's now a relic of the past.
