  • Amsterdam launches stay away video ad campaign targeting young British men. If you are a man living in the UK and searching for “cheap hotel amsterdam” on internet, you will see #amsterdam City advertisement specially designed for you, saying ‘stay away”.A digital campaign targeting men aged 18 to 35.
    The campaign will target people in the United Kingdom who use search terms, such as, "stag party Amsterdam," "cheap hotel Amsterdam," and "pub crawl Amsterdam." The ad videos show young men staggering in the street, handcuffed by police, finger-printed and having their mugshots taken. This efforts is a hope to clean up Amsterdam's bad reputation as Europe's naughty party capital.
    I talked to Mr. Frazer about this topic, a British business owner in Amsterdam’s old town De Wallen, and asked him how often he faces a naughty and young Biritish man in his bar.

    It is true that the English have a certain reputation for hedonistic excess everywhere they travel. But despite being UK born myself, I always treat everywhere i visit with respect. I have returned to Amsterdam more than 20 times since 1999 and I always find that some of the most belligerent tourists are indeed the Brits (as well as Australians and Germans, it has to be said) and I always do my best to never associate myself with them. I see their behaviour and hear them whenever I cycle around the city centre and De Wallen areas (usually heading through Zeedijk en route to Sint Antoniesbreestraat heading towards the Plantage or Amstel districts of the city) and I get quite fed up of the way some of them are just there for the obvious attractions without taking any time to appreciate the other things Amsterdam and the Netherlands has to offer.
    I agree that the city authorities now wish to clamp down on this excessive 'drug and party tourism' because I can fully appreciate how the native Amsterdammers feel about this. The only problem is that the city is planning to raise the tourist tax to try and discourage this, and that of course penalises EVERY visitor who travels in from the UK or wherever. I have not returned back since January 2020 before the Covid lockdown and because everything is so much more expensive now all around the globe (not just Europe and the UK) it is looking more unlikely that I can afford to travel back to the NL as often now.

      @anguschandler4482 You do know that when people get arrested their details are taken including nationality? Stereotypes are usually true and the fact that Britons are on the crosshairs of Amsterdam means they are statistically doing worse than migrants with ill intentions. I've seen how these people conduct themselves in Spain and Portugal and I'm glad for Brexit and Amsterdam for taking a stand.
      You might think this is harmful, but in my opinion it will be a good in the long run as they will be forcibly humbled.

      @anguschandler4482 One can simply ruin it for others.
      It is really up to the Brits themselves to change the narrative and start behaving, and i´m not talking about the British that are behaved and following the rules.
      But to those that need to be disciplined to respect other cultures or be fined and banned for entering this country for life.

    British media has reflected this initiative of Amsterdam as `against the young British tourists`. Amsterdam municipality does not mention the British in their ads, only the ads are in English, though everyone knows it is foremost about them. For a long time, bars were covertly banning the British (in addition racist door policy in some of them) with `no football t-shirt' or in some cases even 'no uniforms' signposts, as they often dress in some sort of uniforms and with that group-mentality create disturbance in the city...

    • @Followmytravels
      @Followmytravels  Год назад +3

      Yes, they don t mention that it s about British, but in the digital ad, they chosed the criterias : 18-35 years old, live in UK, and searching stag party, cheap hotel etc. According to the news sources. But according to the news again, next year they will also target other EU countries.

    It seems like the municipality wants to discourage tourism😱I’ve been there 7 times in the last 15 months and it seems like the city could still use more visitors to support the local economy. You remember how bad it was for businesses just 14 months ago, and how busy the city was before the pandemic. For the record. Some of us just go to dam to Chill. Iv been twice a year for about 8 years. I’m always respectful and keep myself to myself. Clamping down on bad behaviour seems like a great idea. Maybe clamping down on the organised crime and street dealers that blight the streets should be linked in too? It’s interesting to me that Amsterdam has managed to rebrand what’s actually going on here. They’re investing in a police force that’s been underfunded for years (hence the crime) and rather than admit it’s been underfunded they’re pointing the finger else where. It’s genius.

    Literally just got back from a stag do in Amsterdam. Red light district caters for stag and hen parties but does not want any stag or hen parties?? 100 Euros for the avarage drinks round but they do not want anymore of that or the revenue it generates. A Thai Bar owned by an Englishman?? You cannot beat authenticity. A Thai Bar owned by an Englishman in the Red Light District, now just who is he catering for because as an Englishman on a Stag do in Amsterdam, I would have avoided that place like the plague. When in Amsterdam, eat, drink and act like the Dutch or prepare to get royally bent over and financially raped. Prost Murat. Bloody rained every day accept for Sunday, not surprised you stayed home. That cold wind would have sliced your face off. 🙂

      Hi Merton, thanks for your feedback. Hope you enjoyed your time in Amsterdam despite the ice wind weather and expensive prices :) Municipality's broader plan is like moving the vindows to somewhere else, closing those all stag party pubs slowly and transforming de wallen area a peaceful place for culture turists, so yes, actually some people do not want that revenue and trying to change it to another type of revenue :) Actually i was like a sick for a few days so i didn t get out for live videos + shitty weather. Just a note for Thai Bar, it s 2 partner business, other partner is from Thailan, kitchen staff is from Thailand and their thai dishes are quiet authentic in my honest opinion. Have a great week!
