  • After the epic electric fan fail last week, I decided to restore the factory fan setup and run the test again to see how much better the cooling system would perform under the same conditions. How do you think things turned out? #jeeplife #fixityourself #jeepxj

    Very nice video! I've recently solved the aux fan not coming on in my Renix by using a late thermostat casing and placing a thermo switch in the provided port (not existant in the original Renix casing). A properly working radiator and clutch fan, plus the shroud keep the temp at bay even idling at 104F.
    I'll change the aux fan to an 8-blade as well. Not needed, but it won't hurt to get the 33 year old fan out and put a new one there.

    Clutch Fan wear is also something you should think about. Antifreeze keeps your ride running cooler in the summer and protects against freezing in the winter. Using water is must be distilled Water or the Block will rust from Tap Water use. That E Fan needs to be hooked back to the Temp Sensor under the hood.

    when I had a prob. with my 2000 classic jeep overheating l discovered the water pump had no fins on it xcept one partial fin..where the other fins went i have no clue..

    water wetter is an addative to lubricate the water pump. regular coolant has oils for the besrings gor the water pump. with just regular water theres nothing to lubricate the water pump

    Factory set up on these works great.

      @MichXJdad what's a known problem ?

      @MichXJdad good reply, but if u want tips on cooling it, then keep 99 percent of the factory set up , if in warmer climates use dual electrical fans not 3, and use the factory stat, be sure to perfect the mixture, use distilled water religiously, and check belt tension. And no not rev the piss out of any engine when under 4x4 load, it's not a mad ram buggy it's a creep jeep, gag it when necessary otherwise I'm that guy with a no faults system and it's all factory, I dont even run an electric fan and still use the cytrfical force fan with no shroud, it does not get hot, a single row is better than any other row, because it allows air to flow faster threw it . Clean hoses and solid water pump and the correct factory stat, Ive done everything else with fans and rads and pumps and stats, factory set up has yet to make problems ,and running to cool will hurt these engines and running to hot of course will.... they also like to warm up a little before taking off 3 to 5 minutes regardless of temperature,miles and climates , I live on the east coast , alot of hills to climb , and it does amazing. It creeps up to the 210 mark but unless there is clogged issues like in most xjs that were driving so long with no maintenance and have passed onto the next guy who wants it perfect it , the little issues cause issues like that, I run straight green Prestone and only Prestone, mix with distilled water and correct the cap especially if it's got a red pull tab, those are garbage , use factory style cap .I've used them all, I've owned 4 xjs and the coolant system gave me issues alot, i was determined to perfect it, and i directly leave it 99 percent stock the 1 percent is no electric fan and a cytricfal force fan, again if in warmer climates run the dual fans, the system is also triggered to run the fans when AC is on, I removed the ac, if u have ac the system must be perfected in the what I've explained. Perfect the cooling with factory stuff upgrade the fans is about it . Very simple system , and when they are ready for coolant changes ,they are ready when they are not when you are, it will keep all systems in go if maintenance correctly, these tips are also for factory set ups ,I've never had a stroker may change a little on those terms but I cant see why it would or if at all.

      @MichXJdad well it doesn't, and between my family and myself I've been involved in and around and worked on vehicles totalling over 35 years of experience race cars, jeeps and my brother is all that also, and just over 15 for myself only xjs andyjs, and of course multiple layers of junk cars lol, the 210 mark is where it reaches when it's getting warm it backs off to 195 when cooling which 195 is the correct stat for a jeep 4.0 that's completely normal and it only makes it those couple degrees because I run no e fan, just sticks and flows,and backs off like it should and ita not constant it consistant in a good way running to cool will cause premature engine west on the bearings, in a perfect world and then once the world goes to shit at about 100k I've heard of xjs having cooling issues, it was also due to consitant improper maintenance, and flushes, they are a iron block and will for sure be more prone to deposits building up and clogging up ports, I've personally witnessed almost every xj have build up. Well I was lucky my engine came from a 97 tj, it was particularly maintenanced and well kept, the mixture is very key to the cooling, people will say what they want, but of course the engine will go up a couple degrees under a load /steep hill at highway speeds , off road should not be an issue if the system is proper, correct pressure and relief is super key on these engines, its sorta stressful but once good then it's good in my experience, the only time mine sticks on 210 which is directly the middle of the gauge while sitting in traffic and itll stay pegged, still no E fan, im 3.5 inch full springs and control arms, steering and 17 inch wheels , and 33s,bumpers, It still stays there . I will be actually putting the AC back in , and using a the factory e fan because of the AC , the southwest I understand that when it comes to temp. Again I've learned perfecting the system in mixture and belt tension , water pump, I use a auto zone pump always have weather it's the same stuff elsewhere I dunno, works for me.

      @MichXJdad lol, well I also had 89 renix that gave me hell also, the key thing on those is the bottle, people do some weird stuff to the bottle and call it good, that system needs to be completely under pressure to work properly even worse to mess with .

      @MichXJdad I live in dubai ( very hot in summer and temp reaches 120 daily) and I have no overheating in my 2001 jeep cherokee xj and there is no modification in cooling system ( clutch fan and one electric fan) and the temperature gauge always in the middle and sometimes above the middle when a/c is on then the electric fan kicked to cool the engine.

    Did you notice A difference on cooling when you switched from the 6 blade e fan to a 10 blade?

    What is the condition of radiator internally just a thought? Maybe previous people have used lot of tap or well h2o heavy mineralized.

    I'd go for the hood vents and skip the hood lift myself. Also do a coolant flush to get some of the sediment build up out. flushing it in reverse should get the max sediment out.

    How did you do your wiring to have the fan run and bypass the computer?

      toggle switch to a relay, bypassing the PCM wiring altogether
