Takes me back to the 1960s with my dad listening to Glenn Campbell and Bobbie Gentry sing this song playing on his record player.

Both voices work very well together. Madison is knocking it out the park and is still just at the beginning.

This song is so cathartic for me; I don't particularly relate to the lyrics but it's so collectively beautiful from y'all's voices and instruments and the lyrical imagery that it brings me a lot of inner peace

    Lyrics
It's knowing that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowing I'm not shackled
    By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that are dried upon some line
That keeps me on the backroads
By the rivers of my memory
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind
It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind me
    Or something that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walking
It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing
Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find
That you're moving on the backroads
By the rivers of my memory
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind
Though the wheat fields and the clotheslines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the backroads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind
The shutters creek and autumn winds
That make me draw inside myself in silence
Cross-legged now I sit and watch
The endless chase of leaves across my yard
    And laying down my hairbrush
I lean back within my window seat and find
That you're moving on the back roads
By the rivers of my memory, ever-smiling
    Ever gentle on my mind
Through cupped hands round a tin can I pretend to hold you to my breast and find
That you're wavin' from the backroads by the rivers of my mem'ry
Ever smiling, ever gentle on my mind

Mr John Hartford is a name to be reckoned with some particular aaw!
I had no idea this masterpiece was his writing, boo me!!
I first met his presence via computer magic I guess, a live concert due to big flick Oh Bro Where are you Pussycat... or sumthin like that...
I was poor n into ( with guitar) some country period, and Johan Hartford`s personality hit me like a ray of something else, and Ive always considered myself something else. so there!
    end of story.
U2 DID A WHIRLD TO THIS TUNE, and for my Heart! thankyouthankyouthankyou😍😍

When I walk along some railroad track and find

Though the wheat fields and the coastlines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence, tears of joy might stain my face

But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the back roads
By the rivers flowin' gentle on my mind
I dip my cup of soup
Back from a gurglin', cracklin' cauldron in some train yard
My beard a roughenin' coal pile
And a dirty hat pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands 'round a tin can
I pretend to hold you to my breast and find

@@toddish10 Easy there pardner. Most people have this song in their soul from Glen Campbell's cover of it (and now from these two's). It no more takes away grace from the songwriter than proclaiming a deep love for Glen's "Wichita Lineman" even though Jimmy Webb wrote it. Just like with that song? If anything? the love, care and feeling put into the songs by those who made them famous? Can turn people onto the songwriter. I enjoyed John Hartford's performance of his song on banjo ruclips.net/video/9_87xfuaHDE/видео.html and like it a lot. But when I'm struggling? It's Glen's version (and now this one too) that gets to me, emotionally. That's probably true for millions of others as well.

    • @toddish10
      @toddish10 3 года назад

@@ah-op1gt it's been covered by way more folks than just Glen. However, it's still John's song. If anyone's hovering around a good fiddle tune it's John! Lots of John's songs were covered, only a few of them do I feel others did better than John. Unfortunately, John didn't see the massive popularity he was due until Oh Brother came out in 2000, and he died not long after. John recorded a few versions of GOMM, but I enjoy the live versions best, because he had a way of drawing the crowd into whatever he was doing, just an amazing, writer, and performer his ability on guitar and fiddle match his banjo playing. Yep, John's my all-time favorite. These two are great and I would say I like it better than Glen's version, Madison is an awesome guitar player, and well Andrew is a genius.
