In this video, I go into the making of the francaise from this famous drawing/painting of Madam de Pomadour (pastels and gouche) by Maurice-Quentin Delatour. It lives in the Lourve, in a very empty part of the building, but I had the joy of going and seeking it out a few years back. It was worth the wandering! In this video, I go into the procuring of the fabric, the features that make up my ideal robe a la francaise, and then I go into making it!

Sewstine is a hospital worker, RUclipsr, and does all this wizardry with embroidery and fabric? HOW are you this scarily capable, madam?? Teach me your ways!
Honestly! She’s my role model at this point lol
She’s a trained anesthesiologist at a prestigious hospital, a successful RUclipsr, a highly acclaimed sewist and costumer, a wife AND a mother! At this point, she should just teach us all how to win at life 😅
My theory is that she doesn’t sleep😂
It’s magic. We humans will never know how she does it.
@@cap4life1 And she does this too? How is this fair? She does it ALL! ❤️
The headphones and laptop in the recreation photo is just *Chef's kiss*
and the doctors equipment! :) everything is amazing
@@majellabrady66 didn't even see those in the thumbnail, even better
Opening the video with Madame de Sewstine on her phone is also a mood 😂
@@DoraG99 hehehe madame de sewstine
@@majellabrady66 I hoped that would make someone smile 😁😂
Christine: *makes stunningly beautiful teal Pompadour gown that puts us all to shame*
Also Christine: "oh that's just just pactice for the actual gown"
🤯
I KNOW! "practice" xD
Yeah, Wearable Mock-Up Goals!
😂
You know what? It's a shame that so many beautiful textures and patterns have been relegated to being upholstery fabric.
Agree. People just don’t wear these stunning fabrics anymore. These dresses take my breath away.
@@IrishAnnie exactly!!!
TRUTH!!
The fact that you managed to get this dress to fit you perfectly by fitting it by yourself still kind of blows my mind. I mean, 18th century dressmaking techniques were developed by professional mantua makers who were fitting gowns on their clients. These fashions were never meant to be recreated by a lone home sewer.
If you ever commission a painted portrait to hang up in your house, I vote for this one! The pose, the headphones and laptop, doctor's bag and stethoscope!!! It's sooooo good!
If she wants one she can hit me up for a comission.
I agree: there's a 'genre' of family portraits with each person engaged in their favorite activity: one with golf clubs, another with a tennis racket, etc. Dr and Mr Sewstine as well as Baby Sewstine probably have too many interests to be depicted in one canvas but it would be fascinating: dogs must be included, of course.
I'm usually a silent viewer, but seeing the comments regarding pronounciation on your instagram break my heart. I enjoy your content (dare I say free content on top of your work as a medical professional) for its whimsy and unpretentious approach paired to your skill and knowledge. I'm a non native English speaker and I never had any issue understanding your pronounciation. I used to be patient with people correcting me. But the kind of people that correct my pronounciation, more often than not, cut me mid sentence without the chance to resume. Language should not be used to patronize and humiliate. Language is fluid, and while your pronounciation is part of your story, your work speaks for itself.
I just filled with admiration for your skills and ability to translate pictures of elaborate gowns into such things of sheer beauty, recording the process understating the time and skills required on these wonderful creations
I'm a non native speaker too and agree with you. Usually things like that is just envy because they only know one language and the one they mock know several, so ignoring is the best policy.
I'm imagining future historians studying your photos now with the same intensity of figuring out who the true Sewstine was the same way Madam de Pompadour was studied.
You're so incredibly skilled, I'm amazed at every new video. :D
In Russian we say "measure seven times and cut once" and I feel like it's very true for such precious pieces of fabric like this one. Absolutely gorgeous final result!!
In the USA, we say “Measure twice, cut once.” We need to step up our game like Russia. 😁
Christine you are truly living your best life. Honestly why *don't* we do portraits with all of our favourite stuff anymore? You're onto something with reviving this tradition.
Someone needs to tell me why I almost started crying at the end! This is so immaculate and I love that you take pride in your work by supporting other artists to help capture your projects in (quite literally) the best possible light.
Me too! When the shot panned down to the doctor's bag I was gone.
Because she cares so much and the work is beautiful and she does it for pure reasons...I found it beautiful as well
The final picture truly moved my to tears. It's so hard to believe you're seriously from this century, it looks just out of a museum. Your love for what tou sew is to palpable, you inspire me to do stuff i like because yes, we only live once.
Me too. I think it was seeing all her things around her as well, especially the doctor's bag.
I didn’t cry but oooh the goosebumps! She is amazingly talented.
I got close to tears, too. This is just magical!
I'm sorry, those two others were PRACTICE ROUNDS? Madame, you amaze me. Your works and contributions to this community are a true pleasure to witness.
another amazing thing I noticed-- your linen cottagecore dresses are really growing more and more beautiful as the linen gets more lived-in and loses the new stiffness. they look so wonderful!
🥰 my two year old granddaughter watched with me and she kept saying “Pwetty! Granma-so pwetty!”For me, your gown is stunning and it brings me joy to watch you and learn from you! ❤️❤️
OMG... I can't even begin to explain how deeply your portrait in this magnificent gown hit me 💗😭 The medical bag and stethoscope, the headphones and laptop, "Anne of Green Gables"... Your vision and artistry combined with Lindsey Hinderer's is pure magic!
Cutting into fabric is a process! Taking time to cut it and simply just keeping it on its bolt and petting it because you are too cared to cut it is part of the progress xD
I'm secretly happy researchers in the year 3000 will be like: yeah, they wore the robe à la française up until 2025 with a short break of 200 years.
I am happy, but not secretly lol
I read your post before watching, and was slightly confused at the time. Now after watching my brain said, " Ah Hah! French! "
Don't worry about pronunciation of French! Even the French try to correct other native French speakers.
The gown was lovely, as always! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute, as I sat pinning masks. Brava!
I’m French and I approuve ahah
I’m just at the beginning of the video, so I can’t comment yet on the amazingness of the gown 🙂, but I cannot believe that someone criticized her pronunciation of the French words. It’s really good for someone that is not a native French speaker and completely understandable! Perfect pronunciation takes years of immersion in a foreign language. I’m living in a French city for nearly 10 years, am pretty gifted for learning new languages, and native French speakers still hear that I have a slight accent, because I started learning French in my 20s. Ignore the bigoted snobs, Christine!! ♥️ P.S. The gown is just amazing and I adore how you “modernized” at the photo shoot! 😂 I got emotional when you got dressed. I’m so happy for you!
What I enjoy most is the joy these projects bring to your face! You smile with glee!
I always wonder just how big your closet is....
Me: Wow, what a beautiful painting.
Sewstine: "What's incredible about this pastel drawing--"
Me: ...
Me: ...
Me: ... pastel...
Me: ...drawing...
Me: PASTEL DRAWING?!?!?!?
(closes laptop, flips table, leaves room, comes back for the dress)
Yup you can make them very detailed.
Id even go so far to say its easier than a painting if you are only used to pencils.
my reaction too!
I would do ANYTHING to get my hands on whatever paper that could be..
Yeah, I was there, too! I totally expected it to be an oil painting!
@@pigeonbrain1534 most likely hot press 100% cotton rag paper.
This channel is straight-up excellence. Art.
This is fabulous! Good LORD, that pattern matching!
Also, I feel you SO HARD on that soul-leaving-the-body-while-cutting-gorgeous-fabric. Is there a word for that feeling? There should be a word for that feeling.
I'm sure there's a German word for it!
Regret. I dunno....but it should also be applied to the sensation of stepping in a fresh carpet of snow or taking that first scoop out of the peanut butter jar....
@@firegodessreiko Regret is not the word I would look for in this situation. There is no indication of the exhilaration/intensity of the moment. And anyway I usually don’t have regrets after I do cut it.
@@sarahmwalsh
If there isn’t a word for something, you can just make one up.
My hands are clasped together over my mouth watching this.
Everything is so beautiful and I completely understand why you waited to cut that amazing fabric!
Thankyou for your time and videos. You are beautiful and I am living vicariously through you and your stunning creations!!!
❤️
You look absolutely beautiful in that dress, and the makeup was done so well. Truly you should be 100% proud of yourself for your work on this dress. And enjoy it to your heart's content.
lmaoo Christine I love that those two super bomb dresses that you made were just PRACTICE for this one, which is even more epic!! You're such an amazing talent and I'm so grateful you decide to share it with us like this.
How's it feel being the most powerful person in the world? This is absolutely amazing and you look gorgeous
Imagine having to wear 12 yards of heavy silk every single day. No wonder most portraits are seated or leaning on a pillar.
Love that you are so passionate about mastering your art but are also a physician and mom! Truly goals.
This dress is a piece of art. The final shooting brought tears to my eyes. 😍 great work
Oh my stars, I actually started crying when I saw your photo shoot when zoomed in on your Littman. Thank you for sharing. The gown is amazing and I await your trimmings to adorn it ( but seriously - it doesn't need it).
I’m not a person who makes or dresses in costume- but I love watching these vlogs. Fascinating and informative and impressive craftspersonship.
Also- when you’re having your makeup done- that green is wonderful on you- like chartreuse!
I can't sew a button on a shirt but as a historian I am fascinated by your videos.
I don't cry very often, but seeing your doctor's bag and stethoscope in the photo with you did. What a lovely idea!
You look so amazing in this dress! Your pride and happiness is shining through so visibly in the portrait and it's wonderful to see
I LOVE THIS DRESS!!! It’s probably the most beautiful thing to wear in real life.
I could watch you confidently measure and fold fabric all day!!!
The smile of delight next to her painting was great!
Omg I'm so in love with that dress you're so beautiful !! I'm french and I just wanted you to know that you're honouring robes à la française so much !! Really I wish i knew how to sew like you and I hope one day I will ! Love
In awe of that dress!! Wow! I made my wedding gown in the 80s. Huge pouf sleeves with a lace gauntlet. Total 80s. But that gown is absolutely gorgeous!! Well done!! Well done!! ❤❤❤
Even thinking about making this dress makes me scared. Youve got balls man.
Girl, the amount of work you put into these dresses is unreal. I'm looking forward to the day that I have enough skill to even consider sewing a dress like that. Respect!
I literally said “Holy god damn gorgeous” when I saw the INCREDIBLE pattern matching on the center back seam.
Living the Madame Pompadour life to your fullest and inspiring us all. I love the love you gave to the engageantes! Absolutely beautiful gown!
WHEN I SAW THE LAPTOP AND HEAD PHONES I DIED. SO. GOOOD!!! You are so authentically yourself and I love it!!
That teal dress was absolutely divine😭💖🌈
Omg, those sleeves are so ruffly! This gown is just gorgeous - I can't wait to see more pictures!
The small shots of Christine smiling are my favorite parts of the video!! It’s just a soft moment where I can clearly see how much she enjoys sewing and it’s so :’))))) love it
I have to admit, i really like the lace in this slightly darker color! I think its even prettier than the original like this, even though its probably not historically accurate. But, of course, amazing dress as always!
And there you going bringing magic into this world again. Just stunning. I have no words
You do such incredible work and I am constantly astounded with every new ensemble or project. Your ability to manipulate fabric and create masterpieces over and over again is so inspiring!!!
Thank you so much!!!
OMG thank you, i have that paining back at my vacation house, it was brough in from france, it is a prink, but it is stunning, thank you, now i know!!!
Your smile is one of the best things on the internet. It’s so obvious you LOVE what you’re doing...you just radiate joy. The world needs more people like you in it. The final portrait literally moved me to tears! It’s an image of love, and joy, and beauty, meshed with science and learning. You are definitely a modern day Madame de Pompadour. Love, light, and blessings to you and yours.
I'm not kidding: your gown is better than Pompadour's. I'm dead serious. That thing turned out wonderfully!
Why did I cry at the end? It took my breath away!!!!!
Behold such magnificence! The sleeves!!! Your photo shoot! Oh, you look gorgeous!
Graciously worn, and exquisitely sewn. Fantastic
pass the tissues, that lace! the whole dress is so exactly what i imagine most of your personality shines like. (hope that makes sense)
I am living for this gown!! This dress along with the green Madame de Pompadour gown have been on my bucket list and you have really become the Modern Pompadour because just like the portrait, youre surrounded by things you love. You are an absolute treasure and I really feel like Madame de Pompadour is smiling down upon you as you recreate her portraits. I have always admired your work in recreating or creating dresses that are absolutely stunning. Great job Sewstine!!!
The dress Is fabulous and you look fabulous in it! Thank you for the bonus...a life lesson.
Your final pose was everything. Well done.
I have just found your channel... I’m in awe. Can we just appreciate that you are a very busy Dr who celebrated making partner at your hospital, by buying this fabric and creating this incredible dress? My mind is blown, how do you have the time? And you’re a mother? To have both your academic and creative stamina would be “chefs kiss” You are amazing!
This dress turned out so beautifully 😍 the pictures are stunning, you are so pretty and you have such an infectious smile! 😊 I can't wait for more uploads, until then I shall be binge watching
Hi 🙋♀️ this is a very nice 👍🏻 you are always welcome 🙏 and your love ❤️
Wait, why did I start to tear up when I saw your medical bag at the end? So good!
Wow this is a hardcore sowing and reconstructing!
I found your channel by chance and am in awe of your skill at recreating these magnificent 18th century gowns while putting together these videos, having a full time job AND being a mom to your gorgeous little boy. I am binge watching your videos while taking vacation over the holidays (yes, I am now subscribed to your channel now!)
Oh, that final portrait was STUNNING!!! When it's fully trimmed, it's going to be beyond anything, omg. ♥
I only just discovered your videos and simply can’t believe your talent or the fact that you are such a busy, well rounded person with a medical practice, a family and this amazing hobby. What will you do with all your creations? Will they be displayed on mannikins in a costume museum? Published in a glorious, glossy coffee table book? They really do need to be properly displayed for posterity and seen by all! Your dresses are worthy of the Victoria & Albert museum in London or the Louvre in Paris! You are an incredible artist!
The dress may be "unfinished", but WOW! 😍
The fabric is absolutely stunning, and the lace is perfect. I can't wait to see it "finished". This is certainly a dream dress.
I love that you managed to one up La Pompadour herself with your shoes choice! Go you!
Those sleeves are glorious! So flouncy and flowy - the engageantes were worth the effort, they turned out beautifully. The final pictures gave me goosebumps, they are so good!
Omg I got a little teary seeing how beautiful the finished project was and how beautiful it clearly makes you feel! The radiant joy on your face!! Very well done:)
9 months to make the trim by hand? Swoon......totally worth it. I’ve never seen anything like that and it was stunning on you!!!!
Rosie the Cake-Diva has made a stunning cake of the green silk gown with pink roses.
Oooh the sleeves! Everything they should be.
Your skill & vision blows my mind. I love watching talented people create beautiful things. Absolutely Fabulous!!
I love the pictures, the combination of old and new is done in a way that looks so beautiful!!
You look stunningly beautiful in that dress!
The dress turned out beautiful! Also I love that u added the headphones and laptop😆😆
I watched this video with my child (14) who is not into costuming or historical costume at all and they couldn’t tear their eyes from it. You are just so genuine and relatable, charismatic and admirable without being braggadocios and absolutely beautiful. It’s especially meaningful that you are an Asian creator because representation really matters, especially to kids. Thanks for this amazing project and super watchable video!
Girl, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been stuck on this Sartorial Monster for months, batting away constant discouragement from partner and peers (I, too, am in medicine and have a historical/fantasy based shop on ETSY)
I love the juxtaposition of old and new in the photo shoot!
okay, this must be a sign for me to get that oil painting of my family done in the old money style
You absolutely look like an Empress!!
I was getting strong Breakfast at Tiffany’s vibes when she started doing your makeup there. Not sure why, but you had an Audrey Hepburn-ish air about you. Your robe is gorgeous, and you are gorgeous in it as well. Such skillful work. Your prior two practice dresses were gorgeous as well and clearly prepared you well for this one. Thanks for sharing your process with us. You inspire me to finish my vintage pattern 1940’s shirt dress. I got stuck on the sleeves, but seeing all the time and effort you’ve put into yours inspires me to put in some more time and effort on getting the sleeves drafted, mock-ed up and finished.
The gown is exquisite! Congratulations. Your hard work and attention to the small details show.
I love the idea that you put the things you are passionate about. I think she would have liked it too
Wow the teal one with the roses is awesome! Great job. the colors really suite you. I am in awe of anyone who can sew like this.
Saw this painting at the Louvre too 3 years ago.

Arrghhh! Such an amazing dress and portrait! Love seeing someone's warhammer painting desk in the background!
How beautiful!!
Beautiful! Love the portrait!!!
