I agree. I don’t post on social media anymore because I realized that is just a chase for validation and stresses me out awfully. I try not to care too much about what I’m signaling w/ my clothing as well; even wearing the ‘lame’ and ‘uncool’ in today’s standards clothing: stuff that isn’t trendy, old stuff that I just kinda have around, wearing mismatched things. It sometimes makes me uncomfortable because I subconsciously do care about others’ opinions about me but that’s precisely why I want to do that, to have so much courage to not care about being perceived as inferior. I hope this makes sense haha

It does, it takes true courage to be yourself, true status to be able not to care, and true self-esteem in society to show even your flaws. The same goes for showing bare face without make-up and so on. Don't waste your lifetime on online banters, however also please don't forget that you can make a difference with your statements and there are usually more scilent readers than that one annoying troll you're usually disputing with.

There's so much work and perspective here and I find much and it's both interesting (and tbf kinda scary). Aging millennial so absolutely glass houses here, but the fake divestment from the status quo/resistance because of the underlying needs for order and power amongst the chaotic feeling context in younger people is demoralizing.
Regressive social attitudes regaining popularity, the careful smudging of "authenticity" into meaninglessness, the co-opting of diversity to reinforce social order... It feels like it comes together to demonstrate that the majority of people who do not or cannot exist within these structures will end up continuing to be marginalized and it sucks. Like maybe we never should have ceded anything and should only focus on dismantling. To re-use your example not expand the reach and inclusion the vogue cover, but make it so that something like Vogue can't really exist.

This video makes me feel seen. I used to often talk about how inauthentic these companies are when attempting to be revolutionary. Im plus sized so people would always presume I was only wanting to see bigger bodies. No, I want to see different nose and body shapes. People with imperfect teeth, asymmetrical faces. Different tones in men, women, and non binary people. Even from a class perspective. I notice many of these brands (especially the y2k influence) won't hire inner city influencers that may be deemed as "hood" or whatever yet they will pull from that aesthetic completely. To me it maintains that white leaning upper class aesthetics are always the baseline and everyone else is simply getting a chance to sit at their table. It never reads as a true integration of the change that we've all been wanting to see. I used to follow a page on instagram years ago where influencers would share how little they were paid for sponsorships. The majority of the people were marginalized and they were being paid significantly less than what the mainstream/conventional influencers were being baid. It was eye opening how many of these companies throw change at the marginalized and get to acquire social capital that they're progressive. Thank you for this video Rian!!

I love that you highlighted the dichotomy between being part of a traditionally marginalized community and longing to have class signifiers with gen z (or at least what we see online)! In my own life, many people that are my age - I am part of gen z - cling to and long for conservative and rigid ideals that have been detrimental to people, even themselves.
I would say that I am guilty of doing it myself at times too... I think it has to do with living in an uncertain time and longing for a form of stability and structure that past American generations APPEARED to have had? It is really interesting to see how this mindset manifests in fashion!

But what I do see are older people feeling like the youth are lost because they seem to be choosing to not fight the culture wars that prev gens have fought. Kids these days care less about hard lines in culture. They're happy GOATing white rappers, happy having men as their female representatives... I guess it just depends on where you live. But from what I've seen, Gen z isn't conservative. It's just something older writers keep repeating over and over again hoping that the more they say it, the more we might see it

Im 35 and had a really chaotic childhood where I didn’t go to school and shit… I was constantly consumed with ideas of rules and structure , I desired going to boarding school and wanted a beige living room in the 90s… things that now im like , that’s crazy … but I certainly desired the stability I perceived from those things. I think it’s also quite natural when people are young or just in general to want to be a part of something meaningful and important, but maybe not have to choose what it is … and to have that e alleviation from choice whilst having the camaraderie with others in a shared fight, feels special anf fulfung … I think of the huge shift in the types of teen movies like hunger games and stuff was interesting to see too

I think K-pop needs to be touched on. I’m not even involved with that whole genre but I still get kpop videos popping up on my feeds from time to time on instagram, Twitter and RUclips. I think young people seeing these VERY skinny kpop girls dancing in these ‘fun cool’ outfits will effect how they think and feel even more so for those who are involved in the fandom and genre. Imagine supporting and watching these girls groups all the time where every group HAS to adhere a certain body shape, weight and skin colour. I think people see this and the compare to the west where everything is becoming more inclusive with bodies but we don’t have that industry of churning out group after group. I think it puts the bodies and outfits in kpop on a pedestal because there’s order within it. “I want to be pretty like them” and so want emulate that body type/shape and fashion. And that’s not even getting into the cosmetic surgery industry over there.

the performative uncaring pipeline of vsco to bereal, the desire to be an otherwise unknown socialite "it girl" which seemingly abandons oneself to earnest pursuits of fame and fortune (that may be attributed to influencers). another banger vid, and i could write a million things about authentic marketing. the way authenticity was previously communicated was really concrete (i.e., est. date, location (brand, paris), make, etc) and for a while the seeming divestment from conventions in wanting diversity (like you said, that work may have come from a real place) was really ambiguous but has come back down to becoming concrete. forms of conspicuous consumption that signal a silent unknowing luxury is often founded in authentic appeals. but at the end of the day it is always marketing. all of it comes back to the pursuit of profit, both individual and corporate. there is a vested interest in financial security that is heightened by the times panic and recession. what can i do to secure positions for myself, how can i operate in a space where i can compete more exclusively. there is some level of irony too within the conservative redux in that there is an abandonment of bootstraps rhetoric in favor of the unmoving classes which is like very funny in how hopeless and bleak that point of view is. like damn it really got to that point huh. like they dont want to be able to do anything to attain status. it's like so close and so far to being a slay lol

seeing you look back at your notes and references is oddly comforting and really reinforces the time you've put into writing down your thoughts, the structure of these is so well thought out and really gets the brain going! I was just thinking abt this the other day, especially because of people divesting from Twitter and returning to "old" platforms like Tumblr-- there were so many posts scared of the Twitter crowd that I chalked up to gatekeeping and hyperbolic outrage (funny and otherwise hehe.) But there is definitely a large gap in how people on Tumblr view their status and how people on Twitter view it, and it seemed so incredibly reminiscent of the era exiting the 1970s in art where everyone pretended to not have a hierarchical outlook on material and medium, but SO obviously did. Andsomehow, by writing essays and pieces about how working outside of a hierarchical structure and doing away with old practises, they became the upperclass of the art world, creating a new trend that deemed what was out of date, who was nonchalant and uncaring enough to be cared for, etc.
It's sad and still confusing to me as someone from a third world country, having to hop back and forth to see the massive discrepancy in so many of what you described. I think often what my enlistment into the American school system meant in terms of what I should look like, what I should care about, and how casually I should speak about what I cared about, to build the perfect perception that ran in line with what would grant me acknowledgment and social mobility. My experience was so different from my parents and how they described the atmosphere of their immigration. But I see more and more parallels, especially on status, becoming the baseline for people's attitudes.
Definitely can be chalked up to a return to puritanism, as I've seen others say. I think the massive reaction to this era brimming with constant colour schemes and various "-cores" will be a larger demand to rectify all issues with broader umbrella lables and starker palettes. A 2013-2014 "anti-SJW" redux or something...
As for how wealth will be determined in the future, definitely thinking pay-for apps will become more and more common so people can abscond from accessible "" apps like Insta. I think people investing in their digital wealth status will broaden extremely, and I also think the customs market will show wealth! Customs were a thing marginalized black communities especially did to liven their garments and often in part mend them. Something tells me that "certified" brand customisers or big ticket LA based bedazzling duos will become really really popular but I can't tell you why.... just a feeling I have tbh. I think interior design has already become a new wealth statement, especially as even the rich were told to stay home, so they invested even more in ways to display their means and money. I'm sure that space will evolve too in the next few years.

I feel like actually the pursuit of a return to an unambiguous hierarchy is because in the current climate it feels more honest and authentic for someone to say, "Yeah, I care about my looks, I care about status" than to play the Kansas City Shuffle in a way by going I care about status so I'm going to carefully manufacture not caring about it because that's how I will get it, but people have to recognize that I am high status because I don't care about status... etc. It's just too much of a mindfuck, and it's also very... anti-indulgence, I guess? Like you're not allowed to enjoy luxurious things because doing so means that you embody a bunch of negative traits, so people are pushing back against that and going, yeah, you know what, I CAN care about shallow interests x, y and z and STILL be a good, intelligent person worthy of consideration.
Which is exactly what happened in the 2000s as well, with movies like Legally Blonde pushing back against the fake enlightened aloofness of the 90s.

Made tons of sense, and it's also because we need to emphasise that capitalism is not only a economic model, but it's an ideology now. So even if capitalism was to collapse tomorrow as a system, it will be reignited, because it has so many believers, from the crackhead down the street, his dealer, the unemployed dude, the corporate office girl, the indebted kids in college, to the top actual capitalists, aka owners of the means of production. It's the religion of capitalism and white supremacy that needs to be forced brainwashed out of people's brain

I'm thinking of Jennifer Aniston's comment about "not having any movie super stars" (as if she is known for movies and not one show that is a rip off of another). This wasn't only not true because there's people like Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson, but also the people that are becoming stars are all nepo babies like their parents before them. Due to streaming, there's less "universal" stars but they aren't gone - and even if they are so what? Why does there have to be someone loved regardless of what they do? I know it's a bit from the hierchary discussion, but something I've been chewing on.

They bring it waaaaay to the brink and the forefront to make you think ‘look how much I care and we need to care’. When in actuality it’s about perception. They do this to make you think it’s deeper than it is, rarely showing self awareness about that to make it seem genuine.
And I love you’re reaction to it, cause it’s not the worst thing in the world, it is funny. There is value in it, most just won’t see the actual value and think it’s coming from such a deep activist lens that those creators are faking.

I think the points you made in this video are and will always be super salient. The thing I keep coming back to is the idea that capitalism/capitalist entities can and necessarily will always incorporate anything that keeps them relevant, ie: making sales. Nothing is off limits to corporations, as long as the institution can pay for it or sell it. But that's the most pernicious thing right, like if it can be bought and sold, assigned a monetary value, the structure of capitalism is reified.

i think also the term "star" is important. back in the 90s and early 00s we had STARS, and im saying stars in the definition of Richard Dyer. as in they all had an "extraordinary" factor to them. The star would have elements that made them like us (eg. being a parent, or young person, or enjoyed the same genre of music with us) but the also had a "factor" that ordinary people did not have (eg, monroes sensual vibe, the supermodels "drama" and "fierceness". They would represent something that we all wanted and craved but couldnt have so we would look up to them to get that gratification. so the stars had a high status because of those "extraordinary" elements. Now celebs are more normal, as in they dont have said elements that makes us feel inferior and thus some feel like they have nothing to look up to and strive for. that barrier of "we could never be like the stars" are slowly fading cause of how normalised celebs are being showcased. Now my personal opinion is that we could have that "extraordinary element" removed and still have stars but in the sense that the star is more private (eg. not really sharing personal life on social medias and other medias). But i feel like that could potentially introduce more problems. i think some people just miss looking up to things that they cant achieve or have. and i think stars were a good example cause "oo they are extraordinary they deserve to have that fame and popularity and money because im not extraordinary". What i want is to see more art from different people and be introduced to their lives, culture and beliefs through their art.

I often think about the joys that some rich people feel about the ambiguity, maybe particularly young rich people, who get to wear really nicely curated used work clothes and blend in with working class people so they don't stand out. Gotta blend in for that class war!!

absolutely...I think it goes to show that the more you enact something virtually (aka divesting from opulence by posting misc. trash on the grid or sth) the more your aptitude for it (class consciousness) decreases..bc it just becomes about optics and to inadvertently consciously or not accrue yourself more status

it remains such an invaluable lens through which we have come to understand our kids better and it has provided IMMENSE hope to mothers. Especially seeing how you keep growing - it’s MINDBLOWING!
Should you ever reconsider restoring those videos - know that it’s absolutely saving lives and shaping destiny across the world - I mean, I am a Nigerian not even an American and you have touched my life significantly!!!

Awesome video. I’d say the 2000s negatively impacted any age group, not just teens and young adults, although they surely had it rough bc those are times when ppl judge u harshly.
I was not even 10 during the mid 2000s, but I was already counting my calories and restricting my diet. I was too thin and unhealthy, mentally and physically.
Also, I feel like the return of these former beauty trends is coming back stronger than the first time. The effects are going to hurt more, and it’s happening in ways we don’t even realize. I feel like the power reserved for the upper class will be even harder to attain.
:( and it genuinely makes me sad bc I was really enjoying the inclusive era… even if it was performative lol…. It was at least nice to see a diverse set of people represent beauty

I hope you don’t mind, I shared this vid with some conservatives, you may get reacted to in the future.
You make very interesting points on both directions. And although I think you make few very cynical opinions (born out of you losing you’re demographical status), I can see some of your deeper points about the blatant liberal hypocrisy, especially from white liberals and corporations as always. It’s kind of like a ‘yes we let you in the lobby, but no, you can’t buy a room for the night’.

Also I think this is such a slippery slot for ppl who are coming from an authentic place. This isn’t an attack but the same can be said for ppl who love/wear niche designers who ethics are based on social and eco discrepancies and the fragility of human existence. Like when I was in school the blk y2k look was IT. So ppl who authentically loved and always had tht style where called posers.

It’s interesting that you see the fatigue in that way because I feel that the “anyone can be a model now” and “what happened to the supermodel era” discourse is in response to the power structure of the fashion world being so concentrated at the top with people like Anna Wintour at American Vogue that the only people who are getting casted for shows and shoots nowadays are nepotism babies and influencers who have no fashion sense and, for the most part, simply cannot walk nor model the clothes. I would have no issue with you or actual fashion commentators on the internet going to the met gala…… but the D’amelio sisters? Addison Rae? What is their connection to the fashion world other than getting noticed by Anna Wintour?
Just because you’re popular doesn’t mean you’re a fashion girl. Not every pop star is like Rihanna or Lady Gaga. Their artistic personas are directly linked to their street style and the fashion looks they constructed with their teams for music videos and red carpet looks. Expecting that level of dedication from random tik tok dancers and wealthy nepotism babies with no taste is a REACH.
I feel like it’s mostly a cry for us to focus on fashion rather than big name fashion brands and publications just trying to get clicks by using actors and influencers to drive up sales without putting any effort into the styling of the photo shoots or editing of the magazines. I want inclusivity, but I want it to be authentic. Style the plus sized model with the same level of care and attention as you would a skinny model. Tailor the clothes. Give her the perfect lighting. Cast people who can actually walk down a runway and actually look interesting, not just the son or daughter of the model y’all discovered 20 years ago because you’re lazy. No more gimmicks, actually invest in the quality of the product and the consumer will respond positively.
