I'm a 10 handicap. I carry a callaway paradym 7 wood and 24⁰ 5 hybrid (based on the advice of this channel). I use the 7 wood from decent fairway lies into long par 4s/5s and the hybrid for long par 3s and heavy rough. don't let ego stop you playing your best..
Hi Andy, for the upcoming season, I'm going all the way up to a 7 hybrid (31 degree) this season (so 4h-7h in the bag, kicked out the woods to keep shorter shaft lengths in the bag vs. FW woods) and I'm doing this until I break 80 (86 is my best so far with plenty of 3-putts in my round). My hypothesis is that I want to take stress off the mid and long game and use that mental energy to improve on my short game, where I stand to seriously shave some strokes in my game. Spending less time on my iron practice (because the hybrids are much more forgiving to hit and just plain easier) should also free up time for wedge and putting practice. I have 3 kids under age 5 and practice time is at a premium! If I ever threatened to break 75 (a pipe dream at this point), I can always start adding longer irons back in the bag if my swing speed increases and my overall swing improves. Anyway, until I break 80, I think I should just shove my ego in a rabbit hole and add hybrids to the bag to make the game easier (PXG hybrids for me). I'm a 43 year old golfer and my bag will probably go this way sooner or later anyway, lol. What do you think?
Ego is THE BIGGEST hurdle that these clubs face in gaining more acceptance from golfers. Easily 60% of ALL golfers could use hybrids AT LEAST down to the 5 hybrid.....80% could and should go down to a 7 hybrid. I am a 4.7 handicap and removed my my 3 & 4 irons and replaced with a hybrid and a 7 wood. On some courses I even remove my 5 iron and put a 5 hybrid in my bag because it offers more forgiveness and flexibility depending upon the lies you get. My longer hybrids have more tunability in them so I can set them up to be able to play them into the wind (knock down shots) like my irons - but also are much more efficient at delivering the clubhead to the ball resulting in better shots overall. I am currently testing out a few 9 woods too and have been extremely impressed with how accurate they are compared to my shorter irons from 180yd and less.
Me too, rhe other hurdle, in the uk at least, is that no one has these for you to try. 270 quid and they expect you to order online, unseen with no trial period.
@@robertcourt8593 - I test out hybrids, 5-7 -9 woods in the stores when they are new. I write down the models and shafts and keep the information especially if I find some that I really like. Then the following year I keep my eyes open for them in the discound section or else in the use golf club stores. My current hybrids and 5-7 wood (i don't carry a 3 wood - I just adjust my 5 wood to be more like a 4 wood - but it is much easier to hit from the fairway than a 3 wood) I don't mind 1-2 years to get them - because I don't like paying the insane prices for marginal improvements. I got my -7 wood in literally like new condition for $250 total. (Cobra 7 wood - my favorite, Titleist 5 wood) - I got my 4-5 hybrid (Ping G430) for $275
I am 71 male high handicap golfer taking up golf in the last 4 years and love the game. I have bought a Callaway Paradym X Driver and Callaway Paradym X Hybrid and with a women's shaft 40g (they are shorter and swing easy). The result is fantastic my Driver now goes straight and always on the fairway approx 180 yards and my Hybrid has replaced my ping G425 3 hybrid it is much easier to hit and always goes straight keeping on the fairway better launch and goes about 160 - 175 yards. Last round I played a difficult dogleg par 4 used the Hybrid off the tee 170 yards and 2nd shot on the centre of the green. Yes these clubs are fantastic and have made my golf very easy. I've now ordered a Callaway Paradym X 5 Hybrid although I have no problem hitting my 5 iron so will see how it works out. Thanks for the video your channel is fantastic happy golfing Rob
I bought a complete set, 3 through PW, of Majek hybrids in October of 2022 for $350 (£276). I used them all last season, and I love them. I am 76 years old and about a 14 handicap.
I carry 18, 24 and 28 degree hybrids in a 12 club bag. I stopped caring about stigma since noticing that I could not get one more ointment, vitamin or prescription medicine inside my medicine cabinet. Its all about function and ease of use now. I found with hybrids they work best for me if I hold off the swing finish a bit.
Recent subscriber here. You produce excellent content. I really appreciate the information presented. I also love the camera work. Beautiful views of courses I can only wish to play. Well done, sir!
I carry the 3 and 5 versions of the Ai Smoke HL hybrids and they are great. However if you are going to dip your toe in the hybrid pond, try the Eleven hybrids at £85 each, 3 through PW and they do deals on sets. If you want to try a 7 or 8 hybrid, this has to be the route, you don’t need to invest £250 per club. A mixed set of hybrids and irons can work well, biggest problem with Hybrids is rough, semi is fine, but out of 3rd cut or deeper hybrids can’t cope.
Beautiful golf course and an amazing blue sky. Hybrids can make a golfers life easier. I do use a 4 hybrid for long Par 3 holes. Other than that I still my P 790 irons a lot. As we get older it might make sense to add to some hybrids to the bag. The price is one thing but golfers in general don’t mind investing in equipment that will improve the game. Your new channel content is just perfect to me. It’s nice to see new golf courses and have a bit of information on new gadgets. Please keep cracking. Your viewers love what you do. Stay safe Andy. 😊😊😊🇩🇪
OK And. I got just 1:12 into this video before pausing it to admit - more hybrids would lower my scores, but I won't put any more in my bag. My longest iron is only a 5i now, and I like irons - they look like golf clubs 😉. But scoring isn't the end-game for me. Playing the best I can, with clubs that are not particularly 'helpful' is the ultimate challenge. So, I play blades and CBs that Tour players might use (the Wilson Staff Model irons). The challenge may be greater, but so is the reward. It must be the reason I also play with hickory golf clubs 😊.
Lovely course and weather. We should all use the best type of clubs to suit our game, not what the pros use. As I have said before there is no space on the scorecard to identify which clubs we used, just the score. Great work and advice.
Thanks Andy, This modern clubgolfers iron, are so stronglofted, so we don´t need more than 7-P+maybe gapwedge of the same serie, i have m4 iron and 5iron is 21 dgr, so this year i play Driver, 5w, 4 and 5 hybrid and 7-P + 3wedge 50, 54 and 58 thats enough and my best friend, the putter !!
I have a 4 hybrid through the 6 hybrid in my golf bag. I have found that they are easier to use and I also carry a 7wood and 4wood. I did not like hybrids that much when I was in my late 30s and I did not know how to hit them correctly either. As I reached my mid 40s and now into my late 50s near my 60th year I understood how they could and how I have benefitted from using them. The addition of the 7wood was a game changer as well.
I’m playing 5h & 6h then 7i up to 56deg. Lately my 7i has stopped working and I’ve been thinking of adding another hybrid to the bag. This video has given me serious food for thought. Any chance you could get these into a studio sometime soon, Andy? Be interested in seeing the numbers.
I went 5, 6 & 7 hybrid, ping G425 two years ago. The 7 hybrid is pretty useless for me, it just pings the ball up in the air, my 8 iron does the same job same distance and I like hitting it more than the hybrid. The 5 & 6 are great of the turf, but if I need a bit more I hit a 4 utility iron off the tee (King Cobra). Try them all and mix and match!
I looked on Callaway's website... they don't have weaker lofts than the regular smoke hybrids. The differences appears to be the lie angle is roughly 1 degree less upright.. the swing weight is a D1 vs a D2... and the shafts appear to be about a half inch longer giving a little more club head speed.
Here is Callaway cutting into the market of Eleven Golf all hybrid set. I’ve seen a lot of react videos to the Eleven set and they all say if you can suppress your ego, this could be the way for less skilled golfers who want a little easier time on course to go. They look great and perform well.
I have taken ego totally out of my bag. I have 6, 5, 4 hybrids. Added a 5 wood (removed my 3 wood). Have never been happier. Hitting launch windows I didn’t know I could hit and can hit my distances more consistently. Equipment can help you if you just let it.
I've added a 7h and 5h instead of playing long irons. Then my bag is only 7, 8, 9, pw, gw, sw, lob. It works for me. I totally respect if other players don't like it. It works for me! :)
Great point about swing speed and top end of the bag. Guarantee most handicap golfers will hit their 3, 4 and 5 (iron or hybrid) a very similar distance.
I think everyone will find that for their swing speed and dynamics there will be a point where clubs go the same distance. When it's irons bunching up, add a hybrid. When the hybrids bunch up, go to a fairway. When the fairways bunch up you (i) should probably go to the gym.😂
I had a set of Rife hybrids, I was a 21 HC! With these clubs o got down to 12! Yes the lads took piss to start with..but I reminded them when I beat um!😂 now using normal irons and feel I wouldn't be the player I am today without the confidence the Rife gave me! And the Smoke hybrids look really nice.
I have two of the "original" Taylormade Rescue clubs about 20 years old. Has hybrid rescue technology improved to the point that I should think of replacing them with newer ones? Any data on that?
Once iron club speed drops below 75-80mph you generally lose landing angle and green stopping power so anything above 6 or 7 iron depending on loft strength stops being functional and is best replaced with hybrids and fairway woods.
I’m waiting for a company to come out with irons that have +- adjustable lofts like these. I think it could be useful to be able to adjust how strong or weak your clubs are without bending.
Does "stigma" exist once you're past 70? Really, I got over this issue many years ago, but I see several of my regular mates still paying huge sums to have the latest "pro-like", most recent releases of club. But also a couple of the guys have followed my example and bought cheaper hybrid sets like the Wilson LaunchPad clubs. Even our best player in the group (regularly plays 7 over) has recently bought a second hand set of Cobra hybrids 4 to 9 and he's reaping the benfits. So if anyone out there is maybe feeling that stigma is playing a part in their purchase decisions, think again. It's satisfying results that give pleasure, not failure with expensive kit. Thanks for this Andy - sent the link to my regular playing partners.
3 handicap, almost 60 years old. Have put 6 hybrid in the bag in addition to the 4 and 5, never going back. I no longer give a damn about having a low cap approved bag. It’s hilarious how many average to bad golfers I see with a set of clubs three have no business playing. But hey, they look good.
Posted quite a few times my bag with hybrids up to 7 and 9 wood etc. been a PGA member for 51 years and not only do I still see people playing with the wrong equipment but they also play from the wrong tees! golf is supposed to be about enjoyment. When are you going to review the new Cleveland Halo XL irons Andy?
For me I hit woods the best so I now play up to a 40 degree wood and only 2 irons and 3 wedges. My game has greatly improved so I don’t care about the stigma of it. But you have to not care what others think and only care about having fun and what your score is at the end of the day.
One other comment: if you buy a really adjustable hybrid, like from PXG, that has lots of weighting options with the optional weight kit, it will likely stay in your bag longer than your irons. And if you also by your irons from a company where you can select just the sticks you want (like PXG or similar), then if you are upgrading your irons, maybe you are just then replacing a 7,8,9 and maybe PW (assuming you are all wedges from here down to the bottom of the bag), which really drives the cost down for that part of the bag.
I also have up to 8 hybrid in my bag, a mixture of Callaway, TM and Cobra models. I am looking to add the 9 hybrid and P hybrid like you have, and probably deciding between Eleven and Cleveland XL Halo. How do you find the Eleven 9 and P hybrids with launch and height and spin?
@@zazhou mate the 9 and pw hybrid are great I get a good height punch through the air and just land so softly, I’m tempted to have the whole set I have regular shaft

Stigma? they help me stigma ball in the hole so I love my hybrids
I have used Snake Eyes hybrids for over 20 plus years. I could give a rats behind less what anyone thinks. They work. Five of them from 34° to 19°.
Yet another course I wish I were playing there with you. Born on the wrong continent!
The Cleveland Launcher XL halo irons are a better value.
Wallasey suits you Andy...
I could get used to it John
Ego is the enemy of good golf. I have 3-5 as hybrids and will be moving into a 6 hybrid when my shallow cavity 6 iron becomes a bit much to launch. Why make the game harder? 😀
Absolutely 👍
Andy started to interested but saw only 5 and up for lefties , once again these makers leave left handed players , looking in how SAD !!!
OMG sign me up now
😂 right up your street mate
@@TheAverageGolfer just a bit 😃
How you find the distances of the 6 and 7 compared to your 6 and 7 iron
