  • Dr. Michael Richie discusses selective laser trabeculoplasty, SLT glaucoma treatment. Although SLT is not a new treatment, this glaucoma treatments placement in therapy is changing. Data collected on the treatment shows that 75 percent of people receiving selective laser trabeculaoplasty have successful lowering of pressure. Since the SLT treatment works well, and statistics show longer-term success (about five years), it is growing in popularity. In this video, Dr. Michael Richie covers the benefits of SLT treatment for glaucoma and demonstrates an entire SLT treatment procedure, discussing the effects to the trabecular meshwork of the eye.

I had this treatment done September of last year on both eyes. Over two months the doctor wean me off my eye drops. I have never had pressure since. No more eye drops. The procedure is good for 14 to 16 years. Every 3 months I see my ophthalmologist and there's never been a change that I need to go back to the drops. Maybe your doctor didn't do the procedure correctly. 50 laser cuts into each eye minimum. I have 56 in my left eye and 55 in the right. And they feel wonderful!

I've had this procedure done to both eyes. My doctor does one eye at a time. Your eye is numbed with drops, and it really is painless. I just had my 6 week check up and the pressure in that eye went down from 19 with drops twice a day to 13 with drops twice a day. My doctor told me that I can go down to drops just once a day, and when I get the check-up for the second eye that I just had done today, she will see how I'm doing and may consider taking me off the drops completely.

It is untrue that if someone has SLT they don't need to use drops every day anymore. This was somewhat misleading. Most people still need their drops, as SLT drops IOP by about 20% in the people for whom it even works at all. Unless your pressure is like 22 and is dropped to 18 with SLT, you're still going to need a drop. Mine are 33 and 33 - if SLT drops them as much as possible that's still going to leave me with a pressure of about 26-27 which is still higher than the pressure at which I was originally put on drops. I will still need my drops 3x daily in both eyes even if I have a fully successful SLT and this goes for more than 50% of people who have SLT done based on all of my research and what my own glaucoma specialist says.

Trustworthy information. Thank you. But how about eye floaters threatment? I've been suffering it for about 5 years, and since the last christmass I've got numerous floaters irritating me and making the hell in my life. I see them coming from the bottom of my eyes upward when I raising up my head abruptly. I see them moving in any directions of different shapes and sizes.
It turned so I can't contemplate the firmament or the sea line anymore because of erraticly moving dark spots, small circles and stains causing by floaters. I would appreciate any information about specific laser threatment methods that would probably keep me sane filling me with hope to mitigate the negative floaters effect. Thank you!

I had this surgery 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately I sustained a severe corneal abrasion from the lens that was placed on my eye. It had to be removed because of a bubble and placed on once again so it was removed twice, causing the abrasion to be worse. I have corneal atrophy (I've been told). The laser surgery itself was not painful, but the abrasion is horrible and I am still having blurred vision. Is there an alternative surgery to this one, if I would need to have another one (which I will probably have to have in the future)? I don't think I could stand to have another abrasion. Incidentally, this also happened when I I had the LAG surgery. I would love to hear comments about alternative surgery not using a lens. Thanks.

I work with these lasers and the lenses the doctors use can be in really bad shape. Don’t be afraid to ask to have a look at the lens. Look close at the surface and if it’s not good ask the doctor to use one of theirs other lenses. I can’t speak for your condition but typically there is other treatments.
