The Mario Bros. Movie is to the Mario Bros. Game, just like Mormonism is to Christianity. They use basically the same names and words, but that's where the similarities end.
I feel like this movie was never intended to be a Mario movie, they just changed the names of the characters and title of it to make more money a few months before release
They actually had scripts way closer to the game, but production kept dragging on and in the end ended up with a director duo that basically rewrit the script every day until we got this mess.
There's actually a documentary-type video that explains this train wreck of a movie. It was intended to be a Mario Bros movie all along but it got scrapped and reworked so many times it turned into the garbage we got in theaters.

"For some reason, I'm convinced." The Producer's character in a nutshell.
"Going all-in on plumbing" sounds like a euphemism. And it disturbs me.
It is a euphemism and it shouldn't disturb you. All in on Plumbing is just a date with only the sex part, a relationship with only the sex part, or having your 7 best friends over with only the sex part.
Mark Uhler sounds more like a gamble on someone who might have an std
It's an euphemism, and a TIGHT one at that.
Brazzers approves.
When it comes down to it plumbing should be tight or you will get nasty leaks.
Screenwriter Ed Solomon is known for telling a hilarious story about how he was on vacation when the script arbitration for this movie happened. Despite very little of his work making it to the finished product, he ended up getting final screenwriting credit because none of the other writers attached wanted to be associated with Super Mario Bros. and he was the only one who wasn't there to object.
A brave man... or maybe just desperate...
@@kerrybarneyiii1202 Or the FAX machine in Fuji was down.
This film essentially ended the movie making careers of its two directors and caused a 10+ year hiatus on their entertainment work in general.
@@kerrybarneyiii1202 Nah, he could just use the acid trip defense
Sometimes I watch these and I think, "Yes, I imagine that is more or less how that meeting went." This, however, is a masterpiece that could not have done a better job summing up everything involved with the movie in question.
This pitch meeting is somehow less ridiculous than the actual movie.
It's gotten to the point that I click on "like" upon arriving, because I already know this is going to be great!
Producer: Are there any mushrooms in this movie?
Me: There were a lot in the writer’s room when this movie was being developed.
LOL! You beat me to it!
But didn’t that interfere with the acid trip?
@@punkwrestle I meant Ryan!
thees meetings are getting to real.
"Did... did you take magic mushrooms while-"
"No, no no no no. I ate some portabellos"
"Oh okay okay, okay"
"Yeah, that would've completely messed with my acid trip"
*oh, my god* 👁👄👁
If any movie deserves a Pitch Meeting, it's this one.
"Sure, I don't care." A sentence uttered by many scriptwriters today I imagine.
You thought I was on mushrooms when coming up with this?
Kinda.
Well, I'm not.
Okay, good.
That would have really messed with my acid trip.
What?
"It might be."
"It's not."
No idea why, but that made me laugh probably more than it should.
"It must be hard to make a movie from a popular computer game?"
"Actually it's Super Mario, barely an inconvenience."
nice
"For some reason I'm convinced"
Gonna say that in conversation now
I really want "I don't care" to become a new catch phrase/running joke.
The way movies are written nowadays, it would be super easy to do that.
Crap, I forgot to say "Barely an inconvenience.". Whoops.
@@jdbjicase I'll let it go this time.

Love how that"I don't know" is 50/40 genuine confusion and I don't care, with just a dash of How dare you?!

"For some reason I'm convinced" lol that is the new catch phrase. Lol
5:06 that is the funniest line delivery I've seen in a while
Every pitch meeting where he says “Sure I don’t care!” Absolutely cracks me up everytime 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Because you know that’s exactly what the writer thought.😂
Producer: So, you didn't take magic mushrooms?
Writer: Nope, that would have completely messed with my acid trip.

"Exactly like Super Mario but not like Mario at all" can be the whole movie summarized.
The Mario Bros. Movie is to the Mario Bros. Game, just like Mormonism is to Christianity. They use basically the same names and words, but that's where the similarities end.
@@SeraphsWitness Pretty weird thing to make a comparison off of.
@@CDRW24 If you know anything about Mormonism, you know how accurate that is.
I feel like this movie was never intended to be a Mario movie, they just changed the names of the characters and title of it to make more money a few months before release
Generic Name I feel like you’re right
This, but y'know, in pre-production because that's how the film business works.
@@DlCKWALLACE Link please!

Archer: "Hey! Phrasing!"
I love archer and screen rant so this just made my day

Just the amount of effort he puts into expressing, "I don't care."
4:13 I feel like this conversation actually happened in the real pitch meeting for this movie.
Am I the only person who likes this
This show is such a complete tone-shift from literally everything else on the channel. Is it possible to do a conditional-subscribe, where it only notifies me about our good buddy Ryan? Cuz nothing else on Screen Rant is worth watching.
So agree. Much true. Wow wow wow wow.
Taurusus Screen Rant is terrible in general and I had to unsubscribe whenever they kept putting in spoilers in the title of the video or the teaser pic for newly released material 😒 they’re just so trashy. Anything for a view.

Conversations with gamer friends:
Friends: "They need to make a live action super mario movie already"
Me: " They did"
Friends: " No they didn't"
Me:" Yeah in the 90's I think"
Friends: "We don't speak of that movie and if we do we say how it doesn't count"
Many people actually thinks that Mario movie adaptation can work only as an anime... and I can totally see why.
Mario live adaptation wouldn't work honestly too cartoonish to be made live action Games like God Of War and Uncharted would be perfect for Movies
i liked the movie. I'm a fan of dark re-imaginings of things, and i thought how they translated the game elements into a different setting was cool.
It was a fun movie. It wasn't a _good_ movie. And it was _not_ a Mario movie.
@@Fordi Honestly that's a fair assessment. I kinda categorize it to a small degree to the Masters of the Universe film. It was clearly a bad movie but for some odd reason there was some sort of entertainment value. I like Masters of the Universe a whole lot more but, as I said, same category.
"For some reason, I'm convinced" could've been one of his iconic Lines in these pitch meetings

So, "I don't care" is the new "get off of my back"?
sounds a bit worse. Get of my back sounds like something the writer did no thought about or just wanted to do something in the story.
I don't care sounds like he has no interrest in his work at all to begin with.
@@JeroenDoes which can work depending on the context
I think “get off my back” is when the writer generally cares but there’s a story line he can’t explain. “I don’t care” is literally not caring at all about the story he’s creating.
I don't know and get off my back about it XD

@@amy_grace He did not go to hell before he died, and certainly not after for that matter.
To be even more fair Mario 64 was three years from being released. To put bluntly, the version of Mario that Ryan's talking about hadn't made his gaming debut yet.
@@JonSmith-hk1bq You are correct plus the princess was just known as princess toadstool not peach yet and he was just king koopa not bowser yet so the producer shouldn’t have brought that up. They called the princess daisy because of the super Mario land game on gameboy had a princess daisy instead of the normal princess toadstool
@@menageriestudios Little correction. He was identified as "Bowser, King of the Koopa" in the North America instruction booklet for Super Mario Bros. So the Bowser name has always been attached in the United States.
This is probably one of the best pitch meetings of all time. I could not stop laughing throughout.
