  • Although I was born in San Francisco's Chinatown my ancestors came from the Canton region of Southern China. We are from the area known as "Nam Hoi, Sai Chew," and specifically the village known as "Yin Kew." Translated it means "Smokey or Foggy Bridge." Our village had a bridge over a lake that led one to the entrance to the village. This was helpful because the area was often foggy and it was difficult to navigate through the mist.
Today our village is known for having had a strong moral compass which defined the actions and intentions of each resident. One of our ancestors (over 500 years ago) was an advisor to the Emperor, and our village was even visited by the Emperor because he befriended and respected his advisor so much.
And so it is especially fitting that I post this video to remind the governing body of China to pay respect to the ideals of Confucianism and to take care of its citizens as a father would care for his family.
Incidentally, Denise Ho, a Hong Kong activist, has the same surname as I do. She spells her last name "Ho" while I spell mine "Hall." They both come from the same Chinese character, and perhaps her family, too, comes from "Yin Kew." In any case if would be more appropriate for her to sing this song than I, although it is filled with American English and its slang. After all, freedom and independence does not belong only to us Americans. Music by Beyond Lyrics by Tim Hall (with a little help from my friends Jimi and Bob).
This song is dedicated to the brave men and women in Hong Kong who insist on their freedom from tyranny.

Beautiful version of Beyond's 海阔天空, written by the late 黃家駒.

海阔天空 is actually from 1993. It was featured on 樂與怒, the last Beyond album with the late 黃家駒 (Wong Ka Kui). ❤
