Your Best Friend is actually a direct reference to F.U.N. Song from SpongeBob. This was indirectly confirmed in a now-deleted tweet from November 2015 where Toby quotes the song
Well considering Touhou was one of the many sources of inspiration for Toby when creating Undertale I wouldn't be surprised if many of the soundtracks in the OST are inspired by some of ZUN's songs.
I find it quite funny how Heartache's (potential) inspiration also has the pan flute sound, the same one from World Revolving. (If you didn't know, Jevil's theme was originally supposed to be Heartache when Toby was initially working on Deltarune in 2012)
I'm seeing a lot of people commenting about the similarities between the UT and TH soundtrack, but nobody is talking how both games have their own "song that can be played everywhere" meme. For Undertale, there's Megalovania, and for Touhou, there's Bad Apple!! (specially the Alstroemeria Records version), so I don't think that music is the only similarity between UT and TH, they also share other stuff together too, so yeah.
And also the character-that-is-more-popular-than-the-protagonist thing, with Touhou having Flandre and Undertale having, of course Sans. And also the story taking place in a world islolated from the normal world, having characters being either human or monsters (in Touhou's case youkai) with the protagonist being one of the few humans being in a world full of monsters/youkai and having fandoms that are very big and not as toxic as before, being quite chill now.

HOLD ON A F***ING MINUTE ISNT THAT FLAWLESS WINGS OF YATAGARASU?!?! 7:01
That is a remix of this song

ialways love music comparisons
3:58 Honestly, I think "Core" is very similar to "Maple Dream..." from Touhou 3 (1997).
Eternal dream from IN too
I instantly think about the undyne fight whenever someone compares these two soundtracks.
Your Best Friend is actually a direct reference to F.U.N. Song from SpongeBob. This was indirectly confirmed in a now-deleted tweet from November 2015 where Toby quotes the song
its a very long shot to say oddly similar
@@ARandomIndieGameEnjoyer Wait, Flandre is the more popular character? I thought it was Cirno! But alright then. Thx for letting me now about this!
@@ShadowGD_OfficialYT Well idk, but I think more people (who dont play touhou) know about flandre mostly because of U.N. Owen was her
@@ARandomIndieGameEnjoyer Oh yeah, that makes sense.
also 8:40 sounds more like "here we are" than "amalgam". even the piano is similar
exactly i dont know why they didnt put that.
it has interesting connotations, since that part in here we are is supposed to be alphys theme motif. so does that mean that alphys theme was made after here we are? trippy.
Welp can't wait to see this comment section turn into flame war of which song copy the other song, all because someone forget to credit a certain Bad Alppe song when try to make a Undertale parody of it :)
I love misinformation!!
We do a little trolling
Some Titles of the Touhou SoundTracks Describe a little the lore of undertale
With how many Touhou themes there are, if you stick enough titles together you could get an entire book.
Sariel's theme from HRtP have enough alternative names to create a synopsis, lol
I have always had the idea that Undertale was somewhat inspired off of Touhou.
Like has anyone ever noticed that Asgore and Flandre Scarlet's attack patterns are far too similar sometimes?
Toby literally admitted that Touhou was one of his main inspirations
@@Mr.Yeast2 Ahh I didn't know
Toby is pretty Coal, but he made a pretty god-tier soundtrack. ZUN seems chill though, and Touhou overall has a god-tier soundtrack, imo
He is infact pretty coal

hearing flowey theme always makes me get scared because how much of a menace they where
Mettaton sharing a motif with fucking Keiki is crazy
Toby fox loves touhou, he even inuded some motifs in his homestuck songs!
i mean toby took a good chunk of inspiration from touhou...
I can imagine Toby had some inspiration, but when actually listening to the songs, it's not like they are THAT similar to say they are directly inspired by it or trying to recreate it. Both games have amazing soundtracks, and while seeming a little familiar, they are still quite different
Is it just me or none of them (excluding Your best nightmare) are similar?
5:53
@@turkia6148it might be similar in few notes but for me its still more of a different ost
when I hear both parts of the soundtrack I think. How come lone developers still make the most amazingly beautiful soundtracks?
those who got the truckfreak newsletter in their email would know that toby fox grew up with touhou, and based the bullet system around it! Its definitely no suprise that the music in undertale is so similar!
Well, iirc SOULs themes are confirmed to be from Touhou.
Also Undertale's Megalovania has similarities with Complete Darkness from 2nd Touhou, at least at the beginning.
To be honest yea I wish it’s still the same way like where Toby makes similar songs to new Touhou games with his new games. It’s not plagiarism when the it’s only inspired.
As both a touhou and undertale fan I´ve enjoyed this so so much, thank you!
Alternate title: Touhou and Undertale copying each other.
Oh no... The 2nd wave has begun
Undertale just took inspiration from Touhou and other games. Although I think Toby Fox isn't a bad composer, he's very overrated, but that's because of the Undertale fandom.
I think them sounding similar is actually a good thing
There's bad and good parts of the fandoms. I'm both a Touhou and Undertale fan and I hate it when Touhou and Undertale "fans" argue over random stuff, but luckilly there's a part of both fandoms which get along with each other.
@@ARandomIndieGameEnjoyer The thing I hate (or dislike very much at laest) the most of Touhou fandom is that many of the people in it "ship(s)" every character even with the rocks.😂
@@Veranek Yea, I remember I watched a vid (from Suwawako I think) about ships in Touhou and I was surprised on how much there actually is, and even then, barely any of them made sense lol
i think toby was inspired by the touhou series, thats what makes the game unique,an rpg where you can actually dodge attacks and not hope for a dodge
He said it himself
You should've just put every single touhou track that has ZUNpets in the ZUNpet part of Battle Against a True Hero
I can never listen Apparition stalks the night the same way again lol
Not mentioning how the middle of "Dummy!" is really similar to an early section of "Love-colored Master Spark"?
This video is now canon because Toby collaborated with Zun
it's not "oddly similar"?
Toby grew up playing Touhou games and some of his biggest inspiration for Undertale is danmaku for bullet patterns with enemies and how ZUN's music influenced his own style heavily, so why is this "oddly similar"
And Zun said (in the interview with toby fox) that he likes Undertale and its music, maybe even was inspired by it in the latest games like this 4:15 5:01 8:40
Toby Fox and Zun are both composer who can just feels the music, Toby just applies that more to adjusting leitmotifs to fit while Zun is truly free with the flow. Both end up with gorgeous melodies that soar over their pieces.
The first Touhou theme also sounds like the Finale of Omega Flowey, because of how epic it sounds.
Touhou will always have a special place in my heart
I still like that World Revolving in Deltarune Chapter 1 is a mashup of like three different themes. (iirc, UN Owen was Her, Flowering Night and parts of World Revolution from Chrono Trigger.)
Toby Fox X ZUN=🤝
You can see similarities in music all the time lmao. Tbh sometimes its just subconscious for the composers.
I'm Japanese and both are great games!
7:29 the clearest similarity in my opinion
they both got inspirations from eachother as besties beautiful
"mettaton vs keiki" now i goona see tohow an get my battes in my mind "inspiration by jsboy"
two of my favorite indie games of all time.
warms my heart
The first one reminds me of Kid’s Festival ~ Innocent Treasures.
ASGORE reminds me of Gensokyo Millenium ~ History of the Moon.
ZUN is a lot better at composing than drawing lol

Whats weird is flowey's theme is actually taken from a spongebob episode, neat,
But there is sometimes where there is a music stuck in your head and you dont remember where did you hear it
And some musicians have that and sometimes make the music and when it happens, sometimes the music is from something they dont remember
But, Toby is a fan of touhou at the end of the day lol
I love how some of these similarities are from _newer_ games, meaning they're almost certainly straight up coincidences. ❤
6:38 wait, i heard something wrong here, did i hear galaxy collapse being played? or is it just me 🤔
Galaxy collapse is a remix of Heian Alien
