My tip; don’t rely on materials to think it’ll improve your art style. The quote “use whatever stuff is available in front of you is enough” so a pen, pencil, eraser, paper will work. I’ve learned this lesson 2 years ago when I asked myself “am I to flex, or am I to draw?” It was a waste of money. Sure my mother is very supportive about it and wants me to experience new stuff, but I’m still young and learning from my current state hence why buying shit ton of pens that are the same size but different brands or immediately moving from lineart to painting in a week will be a difficult. Back then, my mindset was just following what other artists own and think “oh if I own this, I will possess his style!” Nah, I was just wasting shit. So learn from my mistakes and study first before buying high quality materials

    • @harrietjameson
      @harrietjameson 2 года назад +83

this tip is helpful, but you have to realize that a lot of cheap art supplies might cao your skill level since they will not allow you to do some things that you might want to do, you still need good art supplies, but only to extend your skill cap, not to actually improve

    • @hahamadeyouread214
      @hahamadeyouread214 2 года назад +74

@@harrietjameson yes, decent, cheap, but very good stuff. But buying a ton or buying specific stuff from other artists like “*gasp* I need this mechanical pencil so that I can draw like him!” is going too far imo

I have fallen into stuff like this. But I have recently started going back to drawing with a pen and paper. (I’ve only ever really improved monumentally with that)I tried getting my friend who wants to be an artist to do the same. But they wouldn’t listen. They wanted to wait to get new materials. I can’t really argue too much on this one because I have more materials than them.

For fanartists there's two solid ways to get better:
    1) becoming obsessed with a certain character
    2) out of spite. Spite is a great motivator bc if ppl hate what you do, just make more to piss them off.
(of course that's a slightly satirical comment, only the first option has a real life applicable value)

As a coloured pencil artist, I wouldn't recommend going from dark to light since with coloured pencils, you can layer a dark colour over the lighter one but you can't go vice versa (with some higher end pencils you can go from dark to light) but that also depends on the style you're trying to acheive. For me personally, I aim for realism whenever I do coloured pencils . However, whuth more stylised work you might do a different approach IDK

    1 believe in yourself.
2 don't be too optimistic or too negative.
3 listen to what people say about your art and be critical about it.
4 think too much and you'll get sick
5 never skip resting! U can't draw if your body & eyes are sore. Go! Do something else.
6 make sure to check your progress once in a while. For that u need to keep your old drawings. Be ready to get embarrassed. It's going to be painful.

Just a tip: if you're unsure of someone's pronouns just use they/them! 🥰 It helps to try to work it into your vocabulary so it becomes a natural flow in your speech and you can modify it when you get to know someone and/or their pronouns! 💖💖
It's a little better than saying "I don't know this person's pronouns, it seems everyone has pronouns these days" because everyone has had pronouns for a loooong time. Like when we refer to cisgender people with he/him or she/her. Those are pronouns! Pronouns don't apply just to non-cisgender people so it's not too hard to adapt!

They'll agressively use the wrong gendered pronoun for trans people or keep using "they" even if they don't normally use it much, just to draw attention.

17:03 while she says in the video is truth (you work from light to dark in watercolors), you can also work from middle tones and get highlights. The trick is using transparent watercolors (opaques are a bit more hard to remove, but is not impossible) and using a brush with clean water and paper tissues. Or use the same method while the layer is wet, so you can have highlights with a medium color. Is a bit tricky, but as soon you know how to use it, is pretty useful.

The "draw a lot and push yourself to get original ideas" thing is pretty useless.
I don't want randomness, I want order since that's what ultimately is gonna help me improve steadily. What makes a drawing better isn't originality, but good composition, great anatomy/stylization, good color contrast, counterchange, etc.
I think originality and drawing are two separate things that doesn't come entwined. You can be great at drawing without having much originality. Just look at all those paintings from the XVII century and before: Most of them where paintings of regular people doing simple things, yet they ourstand because of the richness of each composition and art techniques used to create them.

I'm interested in the talk about placing darks/lights/midtones because I've been told my approach is somewhat unique in this aspect. My digital art starts on a black or gray background and I work by starting with a clump of basic shapes made up of shadow-tones placed in the vague form of what I'm making and then adding progressively lighter tones as I "build" a subject and then I refine the shapes/form by shaving the edges off the layered light starting from the lightest and then working down to the darkest.
I have an alternate process that is mostly the same except after making the basic shapes I draw the most prominent shadows and then proceed from there.

Hii! I'm a artist and I wanna share some tips that helps me in art
    1. Imagination. You will need to imagine the thing/person you're trying to draw. You won't be able to draw without imaginations of what you're drawing (unless you're just doing random doodles or some sort of challenge)
    2. Style. You will need to create your own unique art style. This relates to your imagination too! You will need to pick an art style you're going for. Some peoples can have multiple, but its up to you about how many styles you want

Honestly I disagree with your points on 12:30. While it is important to draw things by learning fundamentals and staying within a confinement your comfortable with, drawing tons of art you’ve never drawn before can really bring inspiration and really help beginner artists to expand their comfort zone. I feel like this person could’ve definitely worded things better, but I do still feel like what they were trying to say can seriously help with artists that are new or are just drawing as a hobby. Not every artist is going to want to draw the same way as a professional and not every artist wants to be a professional. That’s just my take on it tho.

I honestly think this person has a very good tip except he’s marketing it as the wrong thing. This Art tip is one I got from an art teacher I really respected quite a while ago. It’s not to make you a better artist, but it’s to train your imagination skills as an artist. Drawing in thumbnail sizes will keep you from obsessing over details and will make you draw quickly so you can fill in 100 boxes. However, the art tip my teacher gave me was that if I ever get an idea for an illustration, I shouldn’t draw the first idea that comes to my head. Instead, I should draw 50 small thumbnails of that same idea, making little tweaks to it and changing it in every thumbnail. This will help me get out more ideas and branch out from my original idea and find an even better version of my original idea. It trains your imagination and makes you explore your ideas on a much deeper level. It also makes you draw things you otherwise wouldn’t draw or things you think are weird or wouldn’t fit well because you have so much space you need to fill and you just want to put something down on the paper.
So yeah, good art tip, but it’s to train your imagination, not your drawing skills! :)

If you're drawing an animal like a cat, or a jackal, you can study the movement of the ears of the creature you are drawing. One con with this is eventually you imagine how the ears would move on your own head and then suddenly when you run, you feel a phantom tail, and when you're angry you feel animalistic ears moving and possibly wings bursting out of your back. You can't speak of this to anyone because you'll sound crazy.

It's not just the eyes alone that should carry the role of personality so other stuff like gestures, body language are still able to give some life into the character.
One way to limit expression and personality is not adding any difference in emotion in their body language or faces maybe- Like have them in a permanent neutral state kind of-

this one was a little harder to watch while drawing - not so much the video's dialogue but the tiktoks - since a lot of it relied on visual instructions. Still just as enjoyable though. Also one of the smoothest transitions to the ad ever, I didn't even notice until half-way through the sponsorship, nice. Looking forward to the next video I watch.

As someone who has worked with watercolor and acrylic the tip in 16:52 is actually pretty good. Watercolor is translucent so whenever shading and lighting, you have to go from light to dark. For acrylic, it's best to go to the midtones first so that you have a better time mixing your colors either on canvas or on your palette.

18:00 for the art medium colour pencils I start with my lightest then my darkest then use the mid tone to blend together and if I want I got back in with a dark to create some contrast

Not sure if this could be considered a tip, but it's helped me be a bit less critical in my sketch work. Work in a permanent medium (I use a pen). You start to build confidence in your work and where you put down lines. I have now 2-3 sketchbooks filled with just pen doodles and sketches and warm ups and I can see how I've become more confident in line placement as the past 2 years has gone by.
