    Good video. I managed to install dd-wrt firmware on tp-link wdr3600 routers thanks to your movie. So thanks for that. The difference is I used an arduino uno (imitation model xdrduino uno) as sort of adapter. The rest of the procedure was the same. I did notice the tx/rx sometimes work if you reverse them suddenly :). These wdr3600's are basically dual band i guess, 2 antennas anyway. But excellent routers in overall performance, especially with third-party firmware that improves it more.
    The arduino is easily modified to a usb serial adapter. The ground pin and reset on analog side can be connected with a cable, then you use the rx/tx and ground to connect same as in your video. So it bypasses the programmable chip (atmega) and (with ftdi drivers) becomes an effective adapter for this purpose.
    Just saying for anyone who doesnt have a cheap adapter you used, in the Netherlands i could not order the amazon product you linked to. Only US or something.
    But your movie was really most usefull, so thanks for putting it on youtube, actually usefull stuff.

    Richard,
    Thanks for the video. I was trying to debrick a linksys E1000 v2 after switching from Openwrt (no wifi for that build) to DDWRT (used wrong one). I was unable to get Putty to work, removed the red + wire, and used just the GND, TX, RX, which resolved the problem with Putty! Awesome!!

    Richard, thank you so much for your very detailed videos. I learned a lot from this video and finally got my router back to working again. My router is wr940n v5, it got bricked when I accidentally uploaded wrong ddwrt firmware. It kept rebooting over and over again. I was forced to take serial recovery path and in that this video helped me immensely.

    Ognian Lipnichanski I am not sure where your comment went but I will answer anyway. I created the bridge to make sure that the voltage was set to 3.3V as 5v will fry your router. I know I did not connect VCC or ground but I did not want to take any chances. It only takes a minute or two to do it. Better safe than sorry. Thanks.

    Maybe this video should be called how to install DD-WRT on this router, because recover is a lot easier using the latest stock manufacturer firmware (auto erases memory). Someone probably already posted the TFTP IP it’s looking for in a forum, then you won’t have to buy a serial adapter.
    Maybe no adapter needed if someone else has already posted the TFTP IP Address for your router. I believe these routers start the TFTP server by holding down reset for three seconds when powering on. Most of the time eth0 might be the wan port of the #1 port on the 4 port switch side.
    Google the forums for your router made by this company and someone probably already posted the IP that the TFTP is looking for. Set your computer/TFTP server to use this IP that you find in the forums.
    If you download the official firmware, it will erase the memory in the beginning if the firmware install and no need to run commands manually.
    Now it will install the stock firmware, done and recovered.
    Now if you want DD-WRT on a router of this model that is bricked then you might need to follow his instructions. If you just want to recover it with the stock firmware then this is to complicated and not needed. I say it might be needed for DD-WRT since sometimes third Larry firmware use special images that are vulnerable to install the third part firmware.

    Great tutorial for the most part. BUt why would you use a steel paper clip (about 7:32 in vid.) for your pins? Probably be easier using copper wire of the right size, takes solder much better than steel. All-in-all, a great video tho!

    Knowing how to connect via serial interface is so very helpful. I was able to gain access to a Netgear router that I'd flashed with Tomato; the flash actually succeeded but somehow the password was munged and I couldn't get into the web UI.
    Access through the serial/USB cable let me see that the router was, in fact, booting correctly and I was able to "nvram show | grep pass" to see that the user password was a string of garbage characters and write a coherent password to the router right there, to be changed through the web UI once I got in.

      Richard Lloyd I completely missed that you had used paperclip pieces for pins. Anyway, my header pins came in and, after soldering them onto the mainboard and following your directions exactly (except for using an Arduino I had lying around in place of the CP2102), My WDR3600 has been unbricked and is working perfectly. You are welcome. It has saved mine a few times now. It seems that any beta build after r25974 DD-WRT firmware bricks it. Thanks

    • @AlexCVisan
      @AlexCVisan 9 лет назад +1

      Richard Lloyd and regarding bridging the 3.3V, I think that's only for the Vcc output of the module, so as long as you have no power connection between the CP2102 and the router's motherboard, I don't see a way of frying the chipset :-? is there any power through rx/tx I am missing?
      I'm asking because I just ordered a module like this one images9.okr.ro/serve/auctions.v7/2015/jan/02/a11bc61b18919800d9c55c5488a3c9d1-7354102-1000_1000.jpg which has two separate voltage output pins, a 3V3 and a 5V and I see no need for bridging any of these pins. Am I wrong? Thank you!

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  9 лет назад +1

      Ciprian Visan You are probably right but what if you are not? What if you mistakenly connect Vcc? For the few minutes it takes to take the possibility out of the question why not do the bridge? If you do not have a soldering iron then I can understand your issue. Thanks.

    • @AlexCVisan
      @AlexCVisan 9 лет назад +1

      Richard Lloyd I just re-flashed my router successfully, thanks again for this video tutorial! P.S.: I finally used a PL2303 chipset converter and I didn't short the 3.3V output :) and as long as you don't touch the converter's output Vcc(s) (I had 2 outputs, one for 3.3V and for 5V) you don't need to short anything. Worked flawlessly!
      Thanks again! Cheers!

      @richardlloydusa  9 лет назад +1

    Nice job. You can turn in login with putting to output to a text file, this way you can read what’s going on and getter better messages, if it shows a hardware issue the restoring could be a waist of time. Are you sure your programmer isn’t marked wrong? The square pad on the PCB is usually always ground. That’s weird that This router wouldn’t follow the standard?

    Hi Richard. I, unfortunately, TFT'ed an official TP-Link firmware with the boot portion not stripped to my bricked Archer C7 v1.1. When I try to TFTP the correct, stripped firmware, it doesn't do anything anymore. So my last hope is using the serial connection method. I have an old PC lying around with a real serial port. Instead of a UART-to-USB converter, can I just use a DB9 serial cable, strip the wires on the Rx, Tx and GND and connect it to the TP Link Archer C7's serial connector as shown in your video?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  8 лет назад +2

      If you want to go back to the stock Tp-Link firmware I would use the default DD-WRT firmware (21061) to bring it back to life then use the webrevert.rar to bring it back to the stock Tp-Link firmware. Then I would download and install the latest stock firmware from TP-Link. It's the safest route. Thanks

      Junior Vásquez Ruiz I was working on a solution for that on my TP-Link WR841N V9, which I have the same problem as you, when I dropped my screwdriver on the circuit board and fried it. I did order a new router because I love it and use it as a back up and DD-WRT range extending bridge too. I will make a video on how to return it back to stock. Hopefully the same process will work on your TP-Link archer c9. I should have it done this week sometime (depending on my success in doing so). Thanks.

    I am not quite clear about the 3.3V and the 5.0V... where did you measure these voltages?
    I have my UART and I can see there are 2 pins with one of them marked as 3.3V and the other one marked as 5.0V.
    When I measured them, they are supplying the correct voltage respectively... and I do not have the option to "short circuit" in order to select the voltage. Any clue?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  9 месяцев назад +1

      These UARTs vary in design so yours may not have the option. The whole reason for the switching of the voltage is to assure that if you mistakenly attach the voltage line (you should not be connecting to the router for this procedure as the router is being powered by the wall power supply) you don't fry the board. It's more of a safety thing than anything else. Just don't use it and you should be fine regardless. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. Do you have to solder the pins to router if they are inserted reasonably well and aren't loose?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  8 лет назад

      +Raghunath Thakar It might work if you don't solder them but I would recommend against it. Any movement or bad contact can cause noise and data corruption which could lead to a corrupted router. Thanks.

      Yes. I've tried that and it send's the .bin file to only 89-90%, doesn't go 100%. Plus powering routter while pressing reset for 3 sec, the releaseing reset doesent do anything.

      Richard Lloyd no. I don't have one. Only through network cable. In order to get a log from tftpd program i have to keep the reset button until i see the log, where it's waiting for recovery bin file. I only get 90% of the bin file exported with the same result each time.

    Eu tenho um tplink que ao enviar comando via ssh, acabei por gravar em uma pasta errada e apagou a memoria, ficando com os leds iguais a este. Com cabo serial e tenho 4 funcionando, nenhum faz a comunicacao com a memoria mesmo porque ela foi apagada e estes pisca-pisca dos leds se refere ao pulso eletrico do circuito para dar start na flash e como nao tem programa, nao é possivel o putty fazer a comunicacao. Lamento, mas isso nao é verdadeiro. Nao mostrou por completo ligando no router com problema e sim em um router que estava funcionando.

    Hi i need help :( i am new in this issue.
    I have only one question.
    İf i power router with its own adaptor, should i buy a 3.3 and 5 volt switchable serial converter?
    I want to buy this cheap www.robolinkmarket.com/cp2102-usb-uart-board.html
    This has no switcher.
    But if i dont connect VCC, i dont need 3 volt or 5 volt output? Am i right?
    You didnt connected VCC but you made a bridge and set that to 3.3.
    İs this possible that if i dont connect to VCC i mean netiher 3.3 nor 5 volt and only connect to rx,tx,grnd; the laptop usb volt i mean can it send 5 volt through rx,tx,or ground and can it fry my router?
    According to your answer i will buy voltage switchable serial converter. because those are more expensive.
    or that cheap one enough for me?
    Thanks very much

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  2 года назад +1

      Many things can cause this to happen. Check your putty settings are the same as on the video and check your connections (wires) are correctly attached. Play with the ground wire as well sometimes disconnecting it and reconnecting while trying works. If all else fails try it on a different computer and see if that works. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    unbricking foscam fi9828P (not v2). cp2102 module shows only steady red light (not blinking), windows 10 does see in device manager on com 4 the module and I updated to latest driver; but plug computer and camera with Ethernet then powering camera tera term (using com 4 and same baud 9600 as cp2012 in dev mgr), just a blinking cursor and no activity on screen. Tera term local echo I turned on to see if I could type characters and I can, but hitting Enter does not go to the next line. Camera has power as it intermittently rotates without doing anything. shouldn't the light on cp2102 be green if it's communicating correctly to main board of camera? Soldered on J8 of foscam the rxd to txd of cp2102, txd of foscam to rxd on cp2102 and gnd to gnd. Power cord in computer is also plugged in so it's using that to make power to cp2102.

      kumaresh raj Make sure you configure your serial connection as I show on the video at 9:05 once you verify those settings then more than likely you have your RX and TX lines hooked up to the wrong pins just reverse them and you should get an output. I did the same thing when I first connected the cables. Make sure you are connecting to TX and RX and if you don't get an output reverse the wires so that TX goes RX on the UART pins and RX goes to the TX pins. Please tell me if that fixed your issue. Thanks.
