unironically, the rest of the symphony composing world was fairly quiet for a while after this premiered. Most people did not want their work to be compared to Beethoven 9. It took decades until Beethoven was truly challenged when Brahms came along.
Funny how pretentious some people are being down in the comments section. Acting high and mighty because they claim to love classical music. I agree with some of their opinions on shitty pop music, but if someone makes fun of Kanye West one more time, there will be harsh words spat in their direction.

I personally think I was born in the right generation. I mean come on, I live in a time when I can pull up any classical work I want and listen to it as much as I want, and can even rewind, forward, and pause it. That's so cool when you think about it. This may not be the kind of music most people listen to, but if you appreciate classical music, this is actually a great time to be alive. You can find pretty much any musical work you want on the Internet regardless of musical time period, composer, or ensemble type. And that's a recent thing too; a lot of you probably remember a time when that wasn't possible. This particular video hasn't even been up five years yet! I see a lot of comments about being from the wrong generation and such, but think about it...Back in the day, you wouldn't be able to just pull up your favorite piece in your own home and listen to it as much as you want. You would have to wait until a symphony near you chose to perform your favorite piece. If you truly love classical music, or any music for that matter, this is a fantastic time to be around, whether you know it or not!
+BassTrombone95 Yeah "classical" music is definitely a whole lot more accessible in today's world. Even just looking at the percentage of the overall population, many more people today are able to hear these symphonies compared to the 18th and 19th centuries.
When Beethoven passed away, he was buried in a churchyard. A couple days later, the town drunk was walking through the cemetery and heard some strange noise coming from the area where Beethoven was buried. Terrified, the drunk ran and got the priest to come and listen to it. The priest bent close to the grave and heard some faint, unrecognizable music coming from it. Frightened, the priest ran and got the town magistrate. When the magistrate arrived, he bent his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, "Ah, yes, that's Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, being played backwards." He listened a while longer, and said, "There's the Eighth Symphony, and it's backwards, too. Most puzzling." So the magistrate kept listening; "There's the Seventh... the Sixth... the Fifth..." Suddenly the realization of what was happening dawned on the magistrate; he stood up and announced to the crowd that had gathered, "My fellow citizens, there's nothing to worry about. It's just Beethoven decomposing."
On May 7, 1824, Ludwig van Beethoven premiered his 9th and last symphony called Chorale, in Vienna. Here we are, today May 7, 2024, some 200 years later, God Bless Ludwig, and what would be the most powerful, spiritual and brutal musical work taught to the world. But if that were not enough, every time in my life that I lose my reason, my conscience, the motivation to even live, I can never help but hear the Ode to Joy reverberating. And although I don't express it, I always break into tears of happiness remembering every word and every letter that the choir makes great.
Most student's thought process. "I need some study music. How about classical. What classical composers do I know? Beethoven... Um... Kay. Beethoven it is." But at least they are still listening to a masterpiece.
I agree. This is the kind of msic you want to study with. But hey, no problem for others who want to try study with heavymetal or anything, im sure it wont be totally beneficial

I'm going to be pedantic here, but 9 symphonies is a lot. Especially for someone who died at his age and wrote so many other pieces. Yes, Mozart may have written over 40 symphonies, but most of them were much shorter and simpler than this. Beethoven basically only wrote grand symphonies which took a LONG time. (not counting other pieces like sonatas etc.)
@@jg-7780 No, what teh fuck is that? I actually know about Beethoven, I've loved his music for over a decade. And yes, I've listened to his music since I was only two years old.
A borderline alcoholic, basically stone deaf, tortured individual who existed in a completely chaotic way on the fringes of society, who was lonely and disenfranchised had this going on in his mind and put it to paper, and yet could not hear the phenomenal greatness of his genius! This is all absolutely incredible!
Beethoven was laughed at when his audience heard him playing while deaf, and it appeared to them to be auditory gibberish. One can only what wonders were in his head. Truly a magnificent artist.
its history is the most tragic I've met, I really feel amazed and a tear runs down my face when listening to their music, it's just the best thing that has created life to be proud and make us understand the genius of human existence. It gives me a feeling of sadness and happiness, without words.
I know it's a joke, but there is actually a 10th. Found few years ago, Beethoven only live to compose the 1st movement (15min33s). It is believed that the 10th was going to have 7 movements. You can hear it on RUclips. There's a book dedicated to the 10th, called The Tenth, by Joseph Gelinek...
Imagine how the composer's mind would be blown finding out there exists a medium where his composition has been listened to over 92 million times, all the while being adored and discussed amongst people who have never met each other.
He already foresaw that! As he said... “There ought to be only one large art warehouse in the world, to which the artist could carry his art-works and from which he could carry away whatever he needed. As it is one must be half a tradesman.”
I'm not born yet but I adore hearing Beethoven from my mother's womb while she's forced listening to it because she's only 14 years old and prefers Adele.
Alan Spector I know this is supposed to be comedic, but it's a very good comment nevertheless. It's refreshing to know new generations still adore classics.
My point isn't that children shouldn't listen to classical music. It's that listening to classical won't make you an extraordinary individual, but playing it on the other hand... P.S Sorry for the typo (*if you're)
***** What are you talking about? That's not even what I'm trying to say! I think you might have clicked the reply button on the wrong comment. I'm talking about all the kids in the comment section that think they are the only ones in their age group that listens to classical music. Everyone listens to classical music! Listening to it doesn't make you anymore special than when you listen to any other genre of music.
I don't know how people listen to this epic af master piece while studying. I love it and there are some movements so strong and intense that it is hard to focus on the study. The worst part, if I have a pen in my hand I start waving it like directing the orchestra.
I listen to it for studying because it makes me write fancier words. Plus it makes you get in the mood of studying like making your essay is a intense thrill ride.
pirulo cebollita I listen to symphonys for studying and also when in breaks. Because it's the music I respect the most and I agree with you listening to this kind of music while studying feels like your not giving respect to the artist, so I do everything in my power to try and respect it hint why I listen to it when in breaks and many other ocasions.
Hey stupid piece of shit. Maybe I used the wrong word, but I still enjoy the music. If you're gonna start insulting you better go to Nicky Minaj or Justin Bieber, you would fit better there
This month marks the 200th anniversary of one of the most important pieces of art ever conceived. Incredible how this piece has revurberated and thrived throughout the generations. What an immortal legacy Ludwig left 👏.
Imagine how happy the guy would be knowing that his work has been listened to over 95 million times even after 200 years. This is the height of human kind.
This is a religious experience. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of the other Romantic-era composers, the clichès really... some of the post-romantic era and some of the old-timers like Bach and Mozart... But this one symphony... this one and just it... it is something totally different. the entire piece (except for the first 12 minutes of the 3rd movement) makes tears flow out of my eyes while I dehydrate, ecstatic. If you're ever feeling like you're losing faith in humanity, this is the remedy. I feel exalted, proud and majestic just for being of the same species the composer was. If we annihilate ourselves somehow, at least THIS ONE SONG MUST SURVIVE. Everything else can be lost, all the species, the oceans, the atmosphere, the Sun itself, but as long as this one piece of music survives, humanity will shine brighter than any supernova could.
Amal Akram you need to see to read music, Beethoven wasn’t fully deaf, he made most of his masterpieces while he was able to hear still, you also need to see to see what keys you hit on the piano, vision is pretty much as important to hearing when it comes to music, maybe even more because although you can’t hear you can feel vibrations, but not being able to see so you can read music and make music can but an end to your music career unless you’re Ray Charles.
So you're telling me that people searched for Beethoven symphony 9, clicked on this video, starting listening, and thought "oh that music sucks" and disliked ? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME ???
Lots dislike all videos they watch just for the lols. I'm also sure that many people clicked on this looking for the Ode to Joy part and when it didn't immediately start playing they thought it was the wrong music. :p
+Nathan Lalande OK! 6800 people disliked this piece. but 52,000,000 listened to it! It beats most pop plays! But as some one else has commented "it is horses for courses"

@@mrgrinch8540 omg Yesss, it's so cool when the melody plays at 19:48, and then the same melody plays with other instruments again at 20:30, and again at 21:22 Man, I LOVE this symphony...it's crazy to think how one man alone could come up with all this in his head:0
@@nameless5053 Well, obviously it took time and effort. But what made Beethoven so great is his obbsesive scribbling. If he wrote something down and it was amazing, but he knew it could be better, he made sure to completely change it. But Mozarts manucripts look more fresh because he was more "one way" unlike Beethoven. This is opinion based but I think Beethoven was more of a hard worker, and Mozart was a genius.
It seems like a lot of people want to know how he wrote his 9th Symphony while deaf. It turns out, just like one has a "mind's eye" and can memorize and visualize intense detail through the imagination, one also has a sort of "mind's ear", where not only can someone hear melodies (all I have to write down is "I came in like a wrecking ball" and everyone here probably has the melody in their head), but also the distances between pitches (the first two unique pitches in Beethoven 5 are a minor-third apart, for instance), and duration. Then, with a high level of training and exposure, people can figure out actual individual pitches (the first sung note of Ave Maria is a B-flat). I can do this myself, to an extent, and in fact mentally writing (as opposed to writing at a piano) is a fantastic way of training your mind to contextualize melody, form, and harmony. I'm certain that Beethoven did a lot of writing away from the piano, and this allowed him to really train his mind's ear to hear harmony. It is important to notice that the further along the symphonie came in his repertoire (the progressively more deaf he became), the crazier his music became, in terms of harmonic usage and melody. This is because the mind's ear is less scrutinizing of hard harmonies, and in fact they can sound very normal in your head. It is very possible that Beethoven had a VERY strong grasp on what he was writing, but in fact didn't know EXACTLY what his music sounded like. Perhaps now he would hear this now and say "Ay! I messed up the trumpet part in measure 220!"
I once read an article about synesthesia, a condition where a person's basic five senses are somehow mixed, for example, being exposed only to a sound and experience some taste or seeing a color or pattern and actually smell something. It's crazy and hard to explain but I recommend reading about this condition, I myself found it amazing. The said article in fact used Beethoven as an example, how could a deaf person write such a beautiful symphony? The author did not defend the theorie but suspected that Beethoven somehow developed a kind of synesthesia: he could hear the music with trhough his eyes.
Leandro de Lima Very intriguing idea, Leandro! Indeed I've studied the condition; sometimes I wonder if I have some gotten form of it (I ascribe words and phrases to complex chords). As I wrote above, it is possible to train one's mind so much that they can literally envision music without needing to write and hear it. I think, after decades of intense composition, he was able to write 9 by mind alone. Much like one can "imagine" an interesting shape and then draw it on paper, without something to base it off of.
he wasn't completely deaf when he wrote this. Hence he is not playing much on the high. All Beethoven fans please dont hate me for sharing this knowledge. I was reading this in a post based on Beethoven's life. He never made music as a deaf man. he made music until he became completely deaf. That is what as written in the post :)
It is so hard to get into classical music...what I mean is that it's so hard to know where to start. There are so many pieces you recognize, but there are no lyrics or titles to go by.... Someone needs to make this easier for us modern clueless folk
I know that it is referred to as "Beethoven's 9th Symphony" but its hardly an easy way to recognize a song. It'd be a lot harder to remember The Beatles songs if they were called John Lennon's fourth two and half minute rock song", etc
RedYellow Blue ok? Classical musics titles are named after what they are. Not what they are about. Some are also named for what they were made for. Too understand their names meanings you need to study classical music.
Exactly! Which brings me back to my original point....someone has to make it easier to get into this kind of music for those of us who aren't educated on the subject!
RedYellow Blue there are lyrics. They start at about 50 minutes i belive. The name for this specific peice is "An die Freude" more comenly known as "ode to joy"

+BassTrombone95 Yeaaas indeed! Finally, someone sees the beauty of it.
Good shit man!
+BassTrombone95 Yeah "classical" music is definitely a whole lot more accessible in today's world. Even just looking at the percentage of the overall population, many more people today are able to hear these symphonies compared to the 18th and 19th centuries.
Concluding to your comment it is quite the safest periods of time yet.

When the magistrate arrived, he bent his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, "Ah, yes, that's Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, being played backwards."
He listened a while longer, and said, "There's the Eighth Symphony, and it's backwards, too. Most puzzling." So the magistrate kept listening; "There's the Seventh... the Sixth... the Fifth..."
Suddenly the realization of what was happening dawned on the magistrate; he stood up and announced to the crowd that had gathered, "My fellow citizens, there's nothing to worry about.

Possibly the GREATEST symphony in history. The fact this man wrote just 9 symphonies and managed to change the world is a miracle.
Yeah
I'm going to be pedantic here, but 9 symphonies is a lot. Especially for someone who died at his age and wrote so many other pieces. Yes, Mozart may have written over 40 symphonies, but most of them were much shorter and simpler than this. Beethoven basically only wrote grand symphonies which took a LONG time. (not counting other pieces like sonatas etc.)
Especially considering he was deaf for several of them.

Man, I LOVE this symphony...it's crazy to think how one man alone could come up with all this in his head:0
Very informative comment, nice!
No doubt, Beethoven - the greatest composer of all time.

The whole movie is based around the 9th.
Never seen the movie. Never will!
Classical music doesnt make movies more deep or noble!
SwordsHeldHigh It wasn't good *because* of its references to Beethoven, it was good outright.

Beethoben! I'm your fan! When will you come to Mexico?
Yeah, ha ha, just like Jesus or Hitler!
No, but really, it's okay, it's just a joke. It would be bad if I inslut him, but no, it's just a harmless joke. C'mon, I bet you've made fun of anyone dead, or at least laugh at something similar. In fact, this isn't worse than someone making fun of alive people, and specially when they have any defect. I just said a little joke, I'm not punching him or something.
Anyway, thanks dude.
tragos tragakis seriously? that remark offended you? Wow, okay.
Cameron Margetts Interesting you referenced Zombies because this is referenced in Day of the Dead -1985. It is what they let a captive zombie play and is from the segment at 46:15 .
Yo Dude. You just gotta use 'Edo Tensei'. So we will have back whoever who died back to life. Wouldn´t it be great ?

Happy 200th anniversary of Beethoven's 9th! I adore every note of this masterpiece.
I have no idea this year was his 2 Centenary
