Plotts are awesome. I have one that is now 13 years old. I don't hunt but she hunts on her own. She is a total character. More people in the county where I live know her than know me. You can't hide anything from her for long, she sniffs it out eventually.
A great book is The Story of the Plott Hound: Strike & Stay by Bob Plott. Yes, Bob is a descendant of the Plotts who developed the breed from the dogs they brought from Germany in the 1700's. Lots of good stories in the book. Bob Plott has also written some other books about hunting in western North Carolina, including what is now The Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Fascinating history centered around the Plott dog.
Walkers' WV Plotts are covered in the book. Great dog breeders. You can get the books on KIndle.

I don't hunt per se, and I live in Canada. We adopted a dog a few months ago who came from a shelter in Georgia and, i'm pretty certain she is a Plott hound. I love these dogs so much. Love to see them be able to do what they were bred to do, great video.

A city man was visiting his country cousin, and the cousin said, "I'm going out with the hounds. Care to join me?" Citybilly said "Sure." Before too long, the hounds struck a track and began to bay. "Hey, what do you think of that music?" said the houndsman to his cousin. "I can't hear it," said the city man, "The dogs are making too much noise."

@@i-love-comountains3850 it’s instincts man. I had 2 sisters mixed (husky and plot hound). I was outside one night putting them in their kennel when I noticed 2 small eyes in my backyard. The husky was too busy being goofy, but my plot hound was alerted by my stare and was stuck on the eyes. I flung the door open and started running. While the husky stayed confused. My 6 month girl dashed out and headed straight for the rat. I was 16 and have never hunted a day in my life. It was one of the best experiences I have ever encountered with dogs. She got killed a year later but she was a damn amazing dog. I didn’t have to tell her anything.

Star mnt plott hounds were my first breed of bear hounds. But my best hound was a Hammer and Smokey river bred bluetick mixed with plott, damn he could track fast. At one time I slept, ate and breathed bear hunting with plott hounds I couldn't get enough. It was so addictive it just about took over every aspect of my life I was married to the chase.

To me when you take a Walker cross with a blutick and then cross the Walker with a plot take those two and breed the walker blue to the walker plot you talk about some of the toughest, best mouths trailing and hunting perfect speed and really really smart It takes about 7 years but once you get it done there is no better hound out there you could turn them loose in the wall Mart parking lot 10 miles away from the woods and they will find you a deer or whatever it is you want them to run but since they have just about stopped dog hunting in Florida I've just lost interest in hunting at all and the still hunters don't understand that when they get away with taking away one form of hunting it won't be long we won't be able to hunt at all especially now that you can raise deer like cows they are already saying well now you can just buy your deer meat from the deer farms so thanks alot high dollar still hunters taking a tradition from Americans that waited all year to get to hear that sweet wonderful beautiful hound music there is nothing better in this world than watching your pops at 5 or 6 months old get in with the older hounds and then the day you turn out just the pops on a track just them only and they take that track and trail and jump on there own it just makes you so proud of all the hard work you put in I could go on forever but I will stop boring ya'll with my cry baby story but it hurts you all the way down to your soul to know that you may not ever get to hear that sweet music good luck this year fellas dump the whole box fellas and pay attention because they sneak that crap in on you because the high Dollar still hunters are buying up and leasing as much property as they can and you want to say idiot I know a couple guys that hunt both ways but they go to Texas and spend $8000.00 or more depending on the deer one of them spent $14,000.00 on a 14 point one year That to me is just egotistical because I swear I have not found any way possible to eat antlers.

I am from West "By God" Virginia and have been here my whole 37 years of life. Bears are starting to move closer to where I am from in Marshall County, so bear damage stamps for $10 has been selling more and more at the local sporting goods stores or depts like in Walmart.
My Dad at 63 years old would absolutely love to get a black bear, after doing a wild boar hunt and how thrilling that was, his next step is bear hunting. We were hoping to see one while mule deer hunting in Idaho this past Oct. so he could use his deer tag on a legal bear, but it didn't come to fruition. I myself want to chase bear as well, but in WV one cannot legally bait, but can run hounds. My neighbor does it, I may have to go with him even though it reminds me of giant raccoon hunting. Still neat to see and hear the hounds work.
Wouldn't mind learning spot and stalk tactics or even saddle hunting near oaks and berries in the fall since WV doesn't have a spring season like some western states. Preferably archery, but firearm season would be nice too. Or whatever tactics would work if I don't have access to someone with hounds. Thanks for sharing.

Another really good video. Your point about incrementalism is the truth -its plain to see it here in Britain -no bow hunting no hound hunting, no hand guns and a hill to climb just to get a rifle but still we don't stand together. If only hunters would see that they will come for us all if they can, even the old men taking their grandchildren fishing. We have to stand together and stand proud of our traditions and our love of nature.

Great video! I've been trying to hunt bear where I live in NY, but the hunting is tough, especially in the big woods of the Adirondacks. No baiting, and no hounds (though we do have a training season) and the food sources are tough to pin down. We're basically limited to spot-and-stalk hunting in very dense and mountainous terrain, which while challenging and engaging, can also be frustrating when you don't take a bear, much less see one.
I've been looking to do some hound hunting in either in a mid-Atlantic state, Ontario or New England. I did some training runs with some houndsmen recently and the whole experience was quite amazing.
I'm looking forward to future content. Keep up the good work!

Yea I understand killing them on the outside they wreak havoc on the young deer and TURKEYS someone made a comment about breeding the nose out of a hound when you hunt enclosures there is a little truth to that but the right enclosures will make your hound have to use those senses if you build enough hiding places for the game and it was a compromise to make all happy they are charging you for your dog trespassing on to other property and ya'll know most dog hunters are respectful and try to get along with land owners there are always a few bad ones out there that get the attitude I'll show that SOB AND they will dump thirty or 40 head of hounds on the still hunters property the night before and let there dogs run all night have deer scattered everywhere there is a place here in Florida called FARMTON USED TO BE MIAMI DOG HUNTING TRACT NOW A MAN HAS TAKEN IT OVER AND YOU HAVE TO SHOCK THE CRAP OUT OF YOUR DOGS SO THEY DON'T TRESPASS ON TO THE STILL HUNT AREAS YOU KEEP DOING THAT THEY WILL EVENTUALLY STOP RUNNING DEER SO I DON'T EVEN WANT TO GET IN THAT CLUB TOO MUCH MONEY ANYWAY $1750.00 A YEAR AND I THINK YOU ARE ONLY ALUOD ONE HOG 2 DEER AND 1 TURKEY IT IS 52,000 ACRES THEY HAVE RUINED IT FOR DOG HUNTERS YOU PRETTY MUCH NEED TO KEEP YOUR DOGS ON S LEASH. Pepper, Plott's descend from German hound lines (I believe they have similar ancestors to Hanover or Bavarian hounds currently bred in Germany).
Most other North American scent hounds come from fox or raccoon hounds (which were also European but generally with French or English lineage).

Yes, Bob is a descendant of the Plotts who developed the breed from the dogs they brought from Germany in the 1700's. Lots of good stories in the book. They used to use Plotts to hunt wolves in North Carolina & TN. Bob Plott has also written some other books about hunting in western North Carolina, including what is now The Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Fascinating history centered around the Plott dog.
Walkers' WV Plotts are covered in the book. Great dog breeders.

The difference is traditionally people hunted for food. They needed to hunt because they had no other way of getting food. You, on the other hand, do this purely for sport. That isn’t tradition

He still hunts for food, watch his other videos on rendering lard and using the whole animal. Not everyone is required to limit themselves to a domesticated lifestyle just because the world has changed and we can mass produce food. You might enjoy not providing for yourself and letting someone else feed you, but many other hunters (myself included) prefer to feed ourselves from the landscapes we love by pursuing sustainable, healthy game populations, much as our ancestors did for tens of thousands of years. In the not so distant past, indigenous hunters could have reduced their reliance on hunting and assimilated into an agrarian society focused on animal husbandry/trade with white settlers, it wasn't "sport" for them to continue hunting. They simply did not choose to live that lifestyle because it didn't align with their core values. I haven't purchased meat in quite some time, I choose to make hunting a necessity to obtain my animal protein because that aligns with my ethics. So for some of us, our relationship to hunting today is a little more complex than just quitting and going to the store

I'm not a hunter but I am not against it.
If more people hunted for meat (esp. deer but also bear), then there wouldn't be so much demand for beef or pork and less land would be devoted to raising them to feed humans. That in turn, would help reduce greenhouse gasses and slow global climate change. Plus, we would be healthier. Deer is much leaner than beef or pork. I don't know about bear.
I've eaten both - taken from my land by a hunter that I know. I liked the bear better. Both were in bbq sauce - think - sloppy joes except with bear or venison. Now I'm hungry....
