You have a PhD and only make $52K a year? Damn all bad I am a Certification/Certificate holder in Sterile Processing and I nearly make that after taxes (48K) with only 2 years experience. That's to show you a degree don't mean everything and sometime can mean a waiste of time and money. But good job on paying off your student loans! 👍
I ran my credit card up to 5k and my limit was 6k lol. I decided that 2020 would be the year I pay it off. I’ve actually paid more than half of it within the first 3 months of this year which raised my credit score from a 680 to 730. I’m so happy. I hope we get another stimulus check because it’s going directly to my credit card.
I also paid off $300,000+ in full 100% after i completed 3 of my degrees. i personally don't like to pay more than minimum payments, unless it's super high interest rate. i would consider the opportunity cost and use it to invest and generate more. so i actually use the money to invest instead of paying the loans, then i ended up tripling my investment, so i paid off my student loans fast that way. i just posted a video about how i paid off $300,000 on my channel. please check it out and let me know what you think too 😃
My degree and cost of living while in school was $92,000 and I managed to pay it all and walk away from my graduation with zero debt. Lots of hustle and discipline in those 5 years 💪
Mine did. I was specifically told not to take mote money than it takes to pay for books and tuition. They told me any extra, decline. Then they told me a few stories of people who ruined their life getting in debt.
Ya I agree, you’re signing legal contracts - master promissory notes that review everything about the loan - being in law school how did she not read the contract she was signing.
Totally. Erika is clearly in an amazingly privileged position to be able to pay an average of 110k+ per year in loan repayments over two years. After tax and living expenses (even if they're minimised), you'd need a gross income verging on 200k and probably more. To be earning that sort of coin, first year out of school is not standard (she's one of the lucky/privileged) To also preach about financial minimalism while living in a spacious apartment in Ginza, is disingenuous too. Hats off to her for the philosophy (I think financial minimalism is great), but it's difficult to take her seriously. (Very) high income, family/friend financial support, existing wealth (she mentioned multiple real estate deals) were likely reasons for her being able to pay off 220k in two years rather than keeping her spending in check (not catching ubers, not paying for lunch, etc.).
matster77 matster77 Hello. I initially tried to ignore your comment, but this was really hurtful and I felt I had to respond. This comment made me want to just delete the channel, but I figure that would be a cowardly way to quit, so instead I wanted to respond. It’s terrifying putting myself out on a public forum like RUclips, and sharing details of my finances and my life. It’s completely out of my comfort zone, but I decided a few months ago that I needed to do it, because I hope that by sharing my story maybe I can help someone out with their finances, or inspire them to get in a better financial situation. Being in $200,000+ of debt is terrifying for anyone, regardless of income. I thought that by sharing my story, maybe someone else who is weighed down by debt might watch this and realize that they too can become debt free. I focused on tips that could apply regardless of income level or debt repayment amount because I wanted the tips to apply to everyone. The only reason I even mentioned the amount I paid off was in hopes that someone would see the title and want to click, and hopefully then be inspired to tackle their student loans. I obviously regret sharing the number now. I should’ve just shared the tips. I’m sorry that this video upset you so much and I’m sorry you “can’t take me seriously”. Yes, in order to pay off that amount that quickly, I was lucky enough to have a high paying job ($250k range). As you stated, it’s not standard to make that much out of school. While I did work very hard to be #1 in my law school class first year to secure that high paying job (while bartending until 2am many nights to help with expenses), I agree with you that it’s luck-I don’t feel like I deserved that job more than anyone else. In fact, I know many people far more deserving of that job. The assumptions you made about existing wealth and family/friend financial support are false. It would’ve been lovely to have, but unfortunately not the case for me. Finally, you called me disingenuous for living in a spacious apartment while talking about financial minimalism. I have never been called that before but I’m sorry you felt that way. I recently quit the high paying law firm to take a risk and pursue a few things I’m very passionate about (I talked about it in my recent “passive income” video) because I care about having an impact on people more than I care about money. You should know that the Ginza apartment was paid for by the law firm. Since I’ve quit, I can no longer afford that apartment (and even if I could, could never justify paying that much in rent since I truly do believe in financial minimalism) and have since had to move into an apartment that I can afford. You’ll notice that the backdrop of my videos changed 2 weeks ago. I was frankly a little embarrassed to tell people this (because I absolutely loved living in that beautiful Ginza apartment and never thought in my wildest dreams I’d have a chance to live in an apartment like that), and didn’t feel like this was something I needed to share with the world, but now you know. I hope this clears up the assumptions you made about me, and I really do hope you have a nice day!
I don’t think I would characterize her ability to pay off $200k+ in student loans as springing from privilege. I think it shows a person taking a calculated risk with debt and using it successfully to position herself in a high paying career. Her suggestions are scalable and can be applied to the person $50k in debt with a $70k a year salary. Now, if you are $200k in debt and only making $50k then, no, you won’t be able to pay it off in two years. But...I would argue you weren’t very wise taking on so much debt for so little return on investment. That is not Erika’s fault and shouldn’t be a reason to to call her disingenuous. Her story may not mirror other people’s situations but dismissing it seems unwise. What she did is actually fairly impressive and unique amongst newly minted, highly compensated professionals. Time and time again I see doctors finish residency, take a job for $250k-400k a year and immediately buy the $70k truck, the boat, and the 4000 square foot house on 20 acres. And they still are massively in debt from school. So, for her to tackle her debt like she did is impressive and unique.
Look, hey, ignore my comment. It was obviously ill considered, (falsely) presumptuous, and overly critical. The tips you provide ARE helpful to someone wanting to get to know this stuff. So keep doing you and ignore the negative twits, like myself.
@@matster77 Wow, I didn't really expect a response like this from you, but thank you for going out of your way to send this. Honestly, I deeply appreciate it (you have no idea). Thank you for taking the time to read my long comment and understand my story a little more.

Girl, I’m in a similar boat and I’m not even a lawyer! 😩 I’ve paid a total of one off in full. Private loans are predators and they prey on your financial illiteracy. There’s hope! I’m looking to transition into tech to increase my income. Last debt to pay off!
Hi Tiffany! For private loans, consider refinancing - it can help lower the interest rate and perhaps other benefits. There's another more detailed video on my channel about refinancing (I think it's a similar title to this one)
This video is definitely the positivity i needed.. I’m a first generation soon to be graduate looking at a lot of debt. It’s very scary and stressful, it worries me alot.
Lifestyle inflation, the same thing here! Not living below your means just postponing lifestyle inflation for a certain period of time. As always great content!
Congratulations! You must feel relieved... When you repay your student loans, you get a guaranteed return. For every additional dollar you pay towards your student loan now, you save paying interest on that dollar for the remaining term of your loan.
You really crushed those loans Erika! Something Ramit Sethi always says is to figure out your debt payoff date. It helps avoid the mental belief that debt will loom over you for all eternity
So glad you mentioned lifestyle inflation! I have friends who get raises and think that means they can spend more. It’s so dangerous. That’s why I’m such a frugal person.
I think this shows that even being a professional doesn't mean you will automatically understand your own financial situation. Being very conscious of your finances and actually making a plan are so key, regardless of what you do or how much you make.
I’m getting on board now, after 12 years, I let my Student loans grow to over $300,000 on an income for acupuncturist because I did not want to face it~ around $27,000 ? I’ve been in 5-6 years of practice realizing I need to grow a business to pay this off. I believe I can do it, and start to face it. !!
Yes!! I believe in you! I'm so excited that you've taken the first step--which is realizing that you need to pay it off. (I totally understand the not wanting to face it because that's exactly how I was until I had my reality check). I'm releasing a video next week which will be a more detailed version of how I paid off my student loans, so I hope you'll take the time to watch!

Now I’m currently selling off those nice things I bought while experiencing lifestyle inflation. Totally agree that’s it’s MUCH more difficult to come back down. Thanks for the good tips here. Currently tackling credit cards then onto student loans. Look forward to more helpful info!
Hi - While we have different levels of debt and income, I still found your tips extremely helpful. Remembering to control your spending is something everyone should be mindful of when they recently graduate
After reading the comments, I find it frustrating why the system is set up where people take on so much student loan debt in order to enter and pursue a high income career. The ‘goal post’ appears to be pushed further away for most of us 😕
Amazing story and very good content. You're a smart woman, crazy how you paid it off in 2 years!!! I was more fortunate but I went to school while working and Rutgers in 2000 was much cheaper then... so I came out of college owing about 36,000. I paid it off in 15 months. I lived at home until it was paid off. Thanks to my family's support in those 15 months.
Great video. I agree, the "I'm still broke" mentality is discipline you need to get out of debt and to live that debt free life. "I have the money, but I don't have the money for that" Wow a quarter million in 2 years. I thought paying off 20 grand in 3 years was impressive. Of course I am just a little ol' lumberyard worker. Lol

I graduated with 40K in debt from college and I paid it off in 4 years. Honestly wasn't that bad. But I can't imagine 200K with most kinds of jobs people get after college. You beat the odds.
Hi Erika. I want to thank you for being so open about your student loan debt. I find your information extremely helpful and motivating. I find you very beautiful, extremely smart and possess one of the biggest hearts I've come to see in quite some time. Thank You. I look forward toward your future videos. So weird that in Italy (and Europe I guess) you only pay 4-5k a year for a university that has the same quality of MIT or Harvard or Yale where you pay ten times more.
Yup education definitely should be cheaper. But the difference in that example would be that MIT, Harvard, and Yale are well known outside of the US by people outside of the industry. The same can't be said for many (not all) schools in Europe. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who could name any Italian university off hand in the rest of the world.. Most of what you are paying for at ivy league schools is also the name and renown. And also the networking/benefits you can get by having that next to your name. Definitely should be cheaper though as what you are learning should be the most important part...
@@la-xl9sw a lot of this fame is because of marketing and American movies. I moved to the USA 20 years ago after I graduated in Italy. I spoke with many young American people who graduated from Harvard, Yale etc Well, they don’t have more knowledge than hundreds of people I know who graduated in Italy, or UK or Germany. Actually some of them don’t even know a lot of important things on geography, history and current issues. But you are correct about the connections they can give you. It’s like an elite group of rich kids whose parents are parts of elites too. So they will get great six digits jobs thanks to the elite group they are in.
making an extra payment can also bring your principle down. Paying the minimum balance applies to the interest only. You can also call the student loan company and ask them what your interest payment is, the pay the minimum plus an extra interest payment to bring your principle down. This can be done on a much lower salary, even minimum wage.
Erika I think this investment for 200K is worth it because as an attorney you can earn up to 300K a year so paying it off is a breeze... I on the other hand was undocumented for 16 years and I started working with all sorts of labor jobs with no support from parents but I paid cash for my college degree and I am 46 year old though I don't have a career but I am debt free but it doesn't mean anything I still need to find a job...
Wow... What a testimony, you crushed that debt! You hit the nail on the head about goal setting, it's imperative! Congrats on becoming debt free and thanks for sharing this! New sub 😁👍
I think it is important to note that even if you graduated with a Liberal Arts degree and currently work at Starbucks, it is still possible to pay down a loan on a sub six-figure salary. It's arguably more important. Erika, I do not think it would be above the audience head to make a future video that digs deep into the numbers of paying over the minimum payment. It's very important to understand the impact that paying anything over the minimum payment has on the interest paid over the lifetime of the loan. Per your example: Loan amount: $225,526.77 Est. Interest: 5% Monthly Payment: $1,318.41 Interest Paid over lifetime (minimal payment): $162,600 If extra $200/monthly is paid, you will save about $60,000 over the lifetime of the loan.
I'm coming back to this comment now--I think you're right that I really need to do a video on the numbers for paying over minimum payment. This student loan video seems to be getting popular now (the views have gone up in the last few days) so maybe now is a good time to add some more debt-related videos to the channel.

Erika I admire your vulnerability by exposing yourself and risking negative feedback. Everything is a process and of course people don't see a individual process just the result. Unfortunately most seem to not get that. However I just finished school and my interest is accruing so much for a 6 month grace period. Great job Erika. I was "lucky", ... I had an athletic scholarship (tennis and basketball) that paid for my room and board, and all I had to do was pay for books, etc. I also had a student work/study job (as well as saving the money from my summer jobs), and when I got out of college, all I had was a "small" government loan (that I paid off slowly at 3% interest), and a local bank loan, that I paid off immediately after I got out of college. Then, on top of that, I paid off my home 9 years after I bought it, and recently bought a new Silverado, that I paid off in less than a year. It is great to be "debt free".
~$5k per month? That's a wild number to be able to put down on a monthly basis (makes sense given the wage, though city living can get expensive quick). Bravo!
Beautiful as always. I did not have any student loan to pay off. But of course this is due to the fact that I went to a French public university back in the late 1870's. Back in the day, we didn't have internet or youtube to brag about it.

Totally. Erika is clearly in an amazingly privileged position to be able to pay an average of 110k+ per year in loan repayments over two years.
I have $150k to pay off making $80K. I’m hoping to pay off within 3 yrs. I live in the dc area and I’m looking to downsize to a cheaper apartment. Cost of living is high. I also plan to apply to Jobs to move into the six figure range.
Hi Gwendolyn, I love your plan! I lived in the DC area too (went to law school at Georgetown) - cost of living is super high. Downsizing is a great idea to quickly cut costs. So it applying to those 6 figure jobs. You have a great plan & I'm rooting for you!
You can do it💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 Downsize and possibly become a minimalist. Only buy out of necessity 💜
I also paid off $300,000+ in full 100% after i completed 3 of my degrees. i personally don't like to pay more than minimum payments, unless it's super high interest rate. i would consider the opportunity cost and use it to invest and generate more. so i actually use the money to invest instead of paying the loans, then i ended up tripling my investment, so i paid off my student loans fast that way. i just posted a video about how i paid off $300,000 on my channel. please check it out and let me know what you think too 😃
Briana Williams I work as an analyst! I contract with the fed. Gov.

Congratulations! You must feel relieved... When you repay your student loans, you get a guaranteed return. For every additional dollar you pay towards your student loan now, you save paying interest on that dollar for the remaining term of your loan.
I really love your mentality and what you're saying. Thank you for the insightful comment!

That lifestyle inflation statement just changed my life forever

I’ve been in 5-6 years of practice realizing I need to grow a business to pay this off. I believe I can do it, and start to face it. !!
Yes!! I believe in you! I'm so excited that you've taken the first step--which is realizing that you need to pay it off. I'm releasing a video next week which will be a more detailed version of how I paid off my student loans, so I hope you'll take the time to watch!

It was a bad investment to lend that money to a student with a useless degree. If you pay them back they will never learn personal responsibility.
I graduated with 40K in debt from college and I paid it off in 4 years. Honestly wasn't that bad. But I can't imagine 200K with most kinds of jobs people get after college. You beat the odds.

Awesome and inspiring. Setting goals work every time. Great job!

Can you do a video like this on paying off student loans with lower incomes?
I think it is important to note that even if you graduated with a Liberal Arts degree and currently work at Starbucks, it is still possible to pay down a loan on a sub six-figure salary. It's arguably more important. Erika, I do not think it would be above the audience head to make a future video that digs deep into the numbers of paying over the minimum payment. It's very important to understand the impact that paying anything over the minimum payment has on the interest paid over the lifetime of the loan.
Per your example:
Loan amount: $225,526.77
Est. Interest: 5%
Monthly Payment: $1,318.41
Interest Paid over lifetime (minimal payment): $162,600
If extra $200/monthly is paid, you will save about $60,000 over the lifetime of the loan.
I'm coming back to this comment now--I think you're right that I really need to do a video on the numbers for paying over minimum payment. This student loan video seems to be getting popular now (the views have gone up in the last few days) so maybe now is a good time to add some more debt-related videos to the channel.
I really appreciated this. Thank you for sharing your experience. It is very valuable. Best of luck moving forward, Erika!

You are wonderful! Your information is very wise and helpful.

Nice video and congrats! Please do a more in depth video on why/how you refinanced and how much $$ you were paying towards the loan on average.
Okay perfect! Will do! :)
