  • Come along as I work in my flowers. I cleaned up one of my flower beds and planted my mother's day flowers and a ton of other blooms. My strawberries now have a new home too.

Before I remarried after my husbands death at 42 my pump went out. Kids were to young but the boys tried and did help. I pulled the rope up from well with my hitch on car. Went to store exchanged pump and assembled as I’d taken apart. It worked ! I was so proud of us.

I think I must have been born with a love of flowers. When I was 3 or 4 years old there was a little house at the end of our block with a tiny, fenced yard with no lawn, just flowers, like an English cottage garden. I was allowed to roam as long as I didn't cross the street, and I would walk down to admire the flowers. The old lady who lived there noticed me and we would chat. One day my mom and I were walking to the bus stop and as we passed the house, the old lady called out a greeting, calling me by name. My mom, startled, asked, "Who's that?" I replied, "Oh, that's my friend."
That was the first of many. Throughout my childhood, I was always tagging along after the old people in the neighborhood while they worked in their gardens, asking questions about the plants and how to grow them. You'd think I must have been a pest, but I was very popular with the old folks. Even Mr. S. who was so proud of his dichondra lawn that he'd yell at any kid who set foot on it; except I was allowed. Even old lady F., who shot Kile's britches full of rock salt for stealing peaches from her orchard, gave me permission to pick her peaches. 😇😂
I was an odd little kid, but they must have sensed a kindred spirit.

Today I replanted my Cherokee tans ! I have planted 3 times!!! A varmint has dug them up twice already! Hoping they will be ok! And I planted more green beans! I am about like Granny, love green beans! More Mississippi pink eyes planted today, 2 more zucchini planted, another row of okra planted! And my first ripe tomato was picked today!!! I started basil in a pot ,today I transplanted them to my raised bed. Pick handful of blueberries, picked double handful of blackberries! Canned my kraut! 2 more churns going and will be ready by the end of the month. Froze squash today too! So thankful I had a good day with my health! And pray tomorrow I don’t pay for the good day I had today!

When someone shares a plant with you my Grandma called them “pass along plants”. It’s still one of my favorite things, to receive a plant from a friend. I always smile and remember who shared with me. I was given 60 iris bulbs this spring from a lady at church. I planted them in so many spots in my yard. I can’t wait to see them bloom next year and think of this kind lady.

Thanks so much for the video-visit as you worked in your flower beds. My mother and grandmother both kept large flower and vegetable gardens. I inherited the "gardening bug" from them. I remember my grandmother always had moss roses near her back porch. Whenever I see them I think of her. My flower beds and garden are much smaller than mom's and grandma's but still bring me peace and pleasure, beauty and abundance.

Everything looks so beautiful Tipper. I love hearing about the history of where you got certain flowers or plants. How wonderful to think that even after our loved ones have passed on we can have something living that they grew. There’s something amazingly beautiful about that. I hope everything works out with the central heating and air conditioning and the pump. What a time for that to go out. Thank God Matt is now able to be home to do those kinds of things.Thank you for sharing such a nice video with us. Be well & take care.

That flower with tiny red flowers is a Penta, one of the best flowers for our hot weather. The more you deadhead them, the more they bloom. They come in lavender and pink, too. Can't beat them in a pot. Used to be difficult to find, but growers now keep them well stocked. Four O'Clocks was one of the very first flowers my sister and I planted as children. They do well in pots, too.

I dearly love growing things, vegetables, flowers, animals all the things ❤. Last year I had pumpkins at my house for the first time and my daughter and I would go out every night right after supper, even before I would clean up the kitchen, and see how everything had grown since the day before. This year we were fortunate enough to build a big raised bed and we are growing tomatoes cucumbers peppers and our usual herbs and all my flowers, and right after supper we all go out to check on everything and water, and we usually stay outside until dark. Sure, it puts me behind getting my kitchen cleaned up from supper, but it’s my very favorite time of the day, in the cool of the evening, seeing how everything is growing and anticipating that first ripe tomato! ❤

    Dear Tipper,
You really are the dearest, sweetest person and I love spending time with you…….especially in your flower gardens! I have a beautiful, climbing rose bush that came from my Nana’s garden that was probably planted back in the 30’s or 40’s. (Could have been the 20’s or before) She loved working in her flower gardens in the front of the house while my Gamp had a fabulous vegetable garden in the back yard. Both had very “green thumbs” that I definitely inherited,…..not only from them, but from my own Mum and Dad. Same tradition……..my mother loved flowers and my father loved growing veggies! I love both!! Thank you for being there for all of us. You’re so appreciated, Tipper! God bless you!
Love to you and your wonderful family,

I think it is called a sweet shrub or carolina spice. I could not get one to grow. When we moved here to the farm. I was so happy there was one here Doug's grandma had planted. Way back in the woods here, and they are old woods, one day I found one of those old farm places; what was left of it was the stone ramp foundation to the cow barn, and the front yard flower beds, just like you said. There was a big lilac bush and some perrenials, still coming up. You just wonder about their lives; probably before 1840, when the soil wore out and people started leaving New Hampshire for places like Ohio. I could listen to you all day Tipper, because everything in life fascinates you, and gets people interested. How anyone can get bored!?😄

I adore that photo of the lady in her yard. There’s nothing prettier, to me, than the old stacked fireplace as I often seem, now standing alone, and wonder about the folks who lived there. That is truly a beautiful photo with the seet lady and her flowers with her home in the background. I have a book, The Face of Appalachia, by Tom Barnwell. It’s lots of photos , mostly from 70s or so, and mostly in Madison County (but not all). He really captured that moment in time. Much like, John Irwin, with is photos and oral history. I think 25 years from now, you will be referenced. I hope you have your own book(s) one day, as time permits.

I have my mother’s bleeding heart. She moved it from her homestead and I moved it from my childhood home to my home. The plant is probably 60 plus years old. It was huge this year with lovely blooms. I have my lilies next to it that my children have given me for Mother’s Day and Easter beautiful blooms. I told my son when the estate is settled some it the bleeding heart and lilies and my irises are still blooming to please transplant them to his house. I actually put it in the agreement when I settled my parents estate that the bleeding heart and irises come with me when it was safe to dig them up.

My love of gardening came from my maternal grandparents, Ida May and James North (who I was named after). They lived on a hilly location and filled those hills with Flags, phlox, cabbage roses, daffodils, bleeding hearts, day lilies, Hosta lilies, Columbine, peonies, Lily of the Valley, and zinnias. I'm sure there were others, but these are the ones I remember. I always thought their yard was so beautiful because every square inch bloomed. I think of them often watching your yard and the way you plant, which I think was much like my grandparents planted.

Thank you Tipper. Two of my sisters live in the house where we grew up. We have a rose Bush that my mother got from her mom way back in the 60s. It is one of those old fashioned roses. Your video reminded me of that lovely Rose.

Makes a person feel a certain kinda way, thinking about passing flowers/plants down through generations. I can't think of a word that does the feeling justice, captures it the way that feels (there may be such a word, IDK, it's more than or different from say, 'enjoy' or even 'love'). Gives one a sense of connectedness to those long gone. There's nobody in my family who's yet ever done such a thing (that I know of). That's very sad, now that I think about it!

I found I had tears in my eyes after awhile....I wasn't even listening to you I was off thinking about my mothers Hansa rose and wondering if anyone had a piece of it. And then remembering how every time you would come and go from the front door all the bees would be buzzing and the aroma....and she would take you around and show you each and every flower that was blooming or about too.

It's a good day when I get to see a new video!! Woohoo!!! You sure work hard. I got a few things planted today too, but I can only do a little at a time. We so enjoy our garden and we love taking people for walks around the yard when they stop by for a visit. We just walk up to the back glass door and look around and smile. It is such a joy!

Have always loved both my vegetables and flowers. Often plant the flowers in the veg gardens. I have the family heirloom plants from many past generations but now the young folks do not care about the history or the heritage. So sad. One day they may care but will not be any left to pass along as the old folks die off.

Re Ethelene Dyer Jones, I used to read her column in The News Observer. Loved learning the history of the mountains surrounding our new home. Her column must be where I first became familiar with Blind Pig and The Acorn soon after you started it. Due to life circumstances and a new computer, I lost track of the blog about 2011 and even forgot the name except for vaguely remembering it was something unusual. Reconnected after watching your Sept 2021 Appalachian Vocabulary Test with the girls on RUclips, although it took me awhile to realize you were the same family as BP&TA. I was so excited, and have been avidly watching ever since. Like your other viewers, I feel like you're surrogate family. ♥️ Continuing to keep all of you in my prayers, especially Corie right now. It was so good to see Granny on camera the other day, and loved her crocheted creations. Joining her in praising God for her renewed health.

Your flowers will be beautiful. I grow strawflowers every year. I start mine in the winter and plant them out the first or second week of April. I’m in zone 6 in Haywood county. Matt’s neck of the woods. Mine are in full bloom right now. I always enjoy your garden tours.

I love flowers but I’ve never planted many. I’ve just always focused on growing vegetables. I’ve planted a few flowers this year and just ordered another raised bed to plant more. Brandi’s mom gave us a hydrangea before she passed away 11 years ago, it still blooms out a beautiful blue every year. Your yard looks wonderful as always, God bless you my friend.

The moss rose is sold as an annual, but drop the seeds , if you cultivate the soil next year, they will come back. I have a big tractor tire in my yard and planted them in there and they have come back every year for 20 years, and I'm in Southern Indiana.
