Assembling a Flying V Guitar

- I ordered a Flying V Guitar off of reverb.com and was really happy with the kit. Here I am putting it together and playing it.
Update:
Since the making of this video, I have replaced the pickups and given it an unconventional paint job. I will make an update on this guitar sometime in the winter of 2022.

Great job fella. I just ordered mine and your video solidified me getting one. Thank you.
I turned mine into a James hetfield tribute V
I want to find an actual Electra and do this. I imagine they're pretty hard to come across.
@@johnbraucher1499 they are, I've looked everywhere for both Electra and other off brand flying V's
@@johnbraucher1499 I feel like using whatever cheap knock-off you can find is truer to the spirit of Hetfields V than trying to find a "genuine" Electra.

Fine craftsmanship 😎😎😎
Thank you
*Only issue I have is putting finish all over the guitar and flipping it onto itself before it settles. 😮 Other than that, beautiful guitar! 🎸🏆 I’m looking to make my own from scratch cuz I like how the Epiphone Prophecy is setup where the strap buttons are as well as input jack. ⭐️🍷 But I want P90 pickups to play dark sludge metal. Great video!*
These kit bodies often come with a sealer sprayed on the body. That is why your stain didn't work. You have to sand the sealer off before applying stain.
I'm a painter decorator I work with stain and wood all the time, everytime u apply stain or anything always give it a smooth sand so the pigment sticks to the wood, always buddy,if in dought always ask for advice no harm in asking for advice bro I still do! Always smooth sand it each coat no matter what u use for it to take hold and for great results the sanding sponge pads are great for guitar bodys like this gets into everything without ripping any edges or corners
@@paulyoung4781 Stain pigments don't "stick" to wood. They penetrate deep inside permanently changing the wood's color. The reason we sand the kit guitar is to remove the sanding sealer completely so the stain can soak into the wood, rather than be repelled at the surface. Staining and painting are completely different processes.
@@timhallas4275 You know what the dude was trying to say. You're just being a dick at this point.
@@timhallas4275 sorry my bad,I forgot the stain pigments still k deep inside the pores of the wood, sorry I get confused with oil paints and stains dyes buddy,I need to read a question proper than just reading half
It wasn’t stain it was just tung oil to give it a nice finish
I used a 25-1/2" scale neck on mine with a single humbucker, hard tail bridge, volume pot and the KILL SWITCH twins, Tap and Toggle!
Nice guitar. Thanks for sharing.
Cool asf. I need another kit project in my life.
Nice video but dude you need a basic home tool set.
It was assembled not built by you. But still a nice guitar.
Couldn’t even watch half, the background guitar playing was killing me!!!
Pretty amazing.
Time was i'd be into this (late '80s).
Found a Cort Arrow for $150, mid '90s.
Decent guitar. Set neck and a preamp i wish still worked. Last battery change hurt it.
Cool. Set neck. cort made some good stuff some from same factory as ibanez
@@allguitar887 They don't make things from the same factory as Ibanez. Cort makes guitars for Ibanez. They also make guitars for ESP.
Something everyone should know about Cort is that they have a history of treating their employees horribly. Like next level terrible workplace. One worker set himself on fire in protest of the working conditions. Do you know how bad shit has to be for motherfuckers to self immolate over it?
I remeber in the 80's cort had a v strat tyoe neck and cast trem . I took a black one set it up it was a hotrod screamer
@@hadleymanmusic Tnanx for the reply. I really dig my metallic red Arrow.
I also have a pre S/N ('76?) Ibz RR Sr that i love and was my main guitar while playing in a band. Been years since i gigged ('05) but before that last one, we'd practice on weekends with one before the date on a week night at the drummers house which was across the bay.
I didn't want to take Blondie across the bay during commute traffic so brought Red.
Played and sounded good but at band volume (First gen CyberTwin), it had a spongy feel. None of my guitars ever did that.
@@allguitar887 IBZ RRSr here.
Who knew?
I love this guitar!
Really cool
When will the update come around?
I’m thinking about getting one of these Flying V’s and having a custom pickguard just like the ones they sell on eBay
Cool build
The flying V, looks best, in a solid bright color, or a solid metallic or pearl.
I’m thinking of getting one of these. Black with a white pick guard.
Its not that easy
@@richardcramb4391 what do you mean?
To get it out the box and make it sound good.you maybe a great player but .
They come out the box.
And you build it and it sounds like shite. And the journey begins.
I hope you enjoy your journey.
I am enjoying mine.
Just saying its not that easy
@@richardcramb4391 bruh like 90% of the people who make kit guitars don’t use the hardware or electronics that it comes with. I’m pretty sure this guy knows it’s not gonna sound or play that great right outta the box

Go grab some Birchwood Casey's Gun Stock oil and wax...sand neck up to 420..then apply thin coats 3 to 4 in total drying completely in between coats and buffing out with an old t shirt and 0000 steel wool...(make sure it dry before steel wool)...after last coat buff with old shirt...trust me...it's the best finish ever for necks...feels and plays like butter...you can do body the same way if you like the natural wood look...same technique Eddie Van Halen used on all the Ernie Ball Music Man EVH sig series as well as the Peavey Wolfgangs later on..even his EVH brand thru fender is using similar tech...
Thank you I plan on doing another similar kit in the future and I'll try this technique.
Nicely done sir
Great build mate bet that wasnt cheap to do! But well worth it though great fun and great result buddy nice 1
I bought a nice block inlay neck offa wish.c
Ive also bought 2 strat necks a block inlay LP neck and a ibanez copy neck too . All are good quality....
Im just at the point of a V body and pickguard.
Id like to have a body with binding.
My necks are all undrilled bolt ons.
Once I find a body and pickguard ill be headed there.
Good job young man!
Omg ! Where did you buy it ?
Mantap ngerakit sendiri gitar👍
Perfect 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
nice job!!!
Awesome
What kind of kit was this? How happy are you with it still after 8 months? I really want a Flying V again but on a hard budget atm
Ok, I sadly do not remember what kit this was. However, there are some things you should know about kit guitars. Generally, unless you have some experience it's going to feel a little rough around the edges. With that being said mine plays well but I highly recommend you change the pick-ups because the ones that came with mine were really cheap sounding one's
Even to a novice if you know just a little bit about working on guitars and making parts-casters and gluing necks back on set neck instruments you should be okay as long as you know your way around a little bit of soldering you shouldn't have much of a difficult time and you can always improvise and change the guitar out with electric & hand sanding. The pickups definitely need to go eventually. Most kit guitar pickups tend to sound good, but be very microphonic).I built one that I would put up against any Gibson any day even though it's not made of the same quality woods,& everything else,it plays just as good as one in my opinion or at least for my personal playing style😁
I'm calling the Gibson police and Mark Agnesi on you for this. 🤔
I built the same one, I have a video or two on my channel
This is sick! I think I’m definitely gonna get one. What did you use to spray on the guitar?
I ordered one of these supposed to have a mahogany body and it was some kind of crap wood that weighed about a pound and a half
Considering buying it to make it look nuts. How well does it feel? I just want it for the body and neck
I have a question can I paint the guitar or just leave it
I love Flying V!! Why you didn't put oil on the back of the fretboard and the headstock? Or it is necessary?
the neck is already finished
Yes if it's unfinished...I highly recommend Birchwood Casey's Gun Stock oil and wax...I commented on techniques above...
Cool ..
No ground wire between saddle and electric circuit??
Lovely clean build, great job
That's not building a guitar, that's assembling a guitar! ;-)
I’m looking into getting a kit. Is there any need to do anything to the neck or headstock? Just leave the wood as is?
It all depends on what kit you buy and how you want it to look. Some people like finish on their necks, some don't and some kits come with finished necks.
@@gagenesbit cool thanks for the info brotha
@@Twalk40 Happy to help
@@gagenesbit how to know sir if the kit you bought is finished or not...and btw how much was the kit?
Same kit I got turned out to be amazing! I'd replace the tuners, pickups and neck and i'd also add a duesenberg trem with a locking nut
What kit is it?
Anyone know if this fits a gibson v case or padded gig bag?
yes it probably fits perfectly
The music reminds me of the band hum
those are EMG pups not what ever came in that kit
I wish lol.
A very simple guitar
Figure since its a bolt on v I'd wanna paint it white like james hetfield
😎🤘👍✌
Where did you get that kit?
How tall is the guitar
That's not "building". That's just assembling a kit
This is good
Thanks
Is this the eBay kit?
It's been a while but I believe I found this one on Etsy.
my God that back ground noise is terrible
He’s using way too much destitution
@@aceblack9031 I think you mean Distortion? And yeah it's a little too much not my taste but ey cool for him if that's the tone he likes
This is: MOUNTING A FLYING V...not building!
I'm trying to get involved with this vid, but for me,that guitar tone is too much. I'm sorry....the video content is ok,but I have to bail.
gage can you play and sing "smoke on the water" please thanks i can sing for you if you want
6:20 How to brake the Headstock...
I actually had a pillow off-screen to cushion the headstock and I was very conscious of the pressure I was putting on the guitar.
Why would you have to brake the headstock? Was it going somewhere?
everyone does natural wood. boring lol I want one tho

Good video, painful repetitive music
У меня кровь из ушей полилась от этого шкрябания на гитаре
Those pickups suck and make it sounds like shit.
Summon the power of Duncan !
Well it’s awesome but those pickups belong in a garbage can
first rule... explorer, les paul and especially flying v... never bolt on. heel joint is the only way... most gibsons are glued in for a reason. bolt on is a cheap cheater design and usually they are a pain in the ass to intonate... just a word of advice I am not impressed by bolt on cheesy guitars... a real builder doesn't need a kit.
@@notexpatjoe fender strats and p basses can be bolt on as they are traditionally built that way. like i stated flying v's and explorers are traditionally heel glue in necks or neck through for a reason. i build and design guitars. i will show you why certain designs it's best to glue the neck. fender styles are ok for bolt on... kits are junk and in my opinion made of poorly fit and cut and fitted with junk hardware and pickups. cheap china tiawan crapola guitar even in a kit is still cheap junk. the audio in this video is awful. poorly played and the pickups sound like garbage. all in all if you are 12 and need to rock, start out cheap and then when you get good pay for a real guitar. just me.
I went to your website but it no longer exists. Show us your guitar builds so we can see how it should be done.
raw is so boring we've all seen 100 V's built

YOU should have used tru oil for you clear coat better than spray on
