I just got a $50 Strat type guitar from Temu just out of curiosity. Out of the box, it's not bad at all! It was nearly in tune, clean, no damage in transit and delivered fast. Always wanted to have the experience of building a guitar and this is inspiring.
I would even consider that essential (and obvious tbh). Adjusting the saddle under full tension is asking for trouble, especially with cheaper bridges (but not just with those, really).
Nice first build. Reminds me of all the mistakes I made. For example when I saw you clamp the neck and body together, then bust out the cordless hand drill I was like-- OMG.. Noo. I would have mounted your trem bridge - since the body was already pre-drilled, put the tuners on and a nut, then clamp it together with low and high e strings installed, then you could line everything up. including lining up the pickup screws with the strings. If you had to drill holes for the pick guard that would have been the time. When mounting the neck I use the plate as a guide to drill 4 holes in the body first and use a drill press. Then clamp it together and continue the holes into the neck. Here's where I do something different. Once you have your 3/16" holes drilled through the body and into the neck , I take the neck back over to the drill press and re drill the holes to 9/32 in. The I install Everbuilt #10-32 brass insert nuts (From Lowes) into the neck. Then I mount the neck with #10-32 x 1-1/2in counter sunk screws. Makes for a very tight neck joint. Anyways.. that's my 2 cents :).
Please make sure those sunglasses protect from uv rays, starring at the sun with cheap sunglasses with no uv protection is actually more dangerous than just plain starring at the sun, because it will dilate your eyes wider for a dark environment while still still letting uv rays in. Always be wary of cheap sunglasses: just because the lens plastic makes things less bright doesn’t mean it protects your eye.
You only have one pair of eyes so don't be a tight butt abd buy proper glasses with certification. I only wear glass polarised Made in Japan, durable and zero eye strain. Never looked back from my being cheapo plastic junk days.
It is better to have sunglasses with UV protection, sure, but it's not like sunglasses without UV protection will somehow destroy your eyes within days. It might at best have a fairly miniscule effect after several decades (and any actual scientific proof of the long-term benefit of using UV protective sunglasses is almost nonexistent). It's not like the difference in pupil dilation with and without sunglasses is that significant to begin with, plus you only wear sunglasses a fraction of time, so the rest of the time your eyes are "unprotected" from UV anyway. Saying "she should not wear those" is vastly overblown. The whole UV protection scare is to a large degree just luxury brands trying to sell you their insanely overpriced products (and cheap sunglasses doesn't automatically equal no UV, too). Also, fun fact, even with UV protective lenses, a large amount of UV radiation finds its way into the eye around the frames anyway. So yeah, sure, UV protection is a nice thing to have, but it's really not that big of a deal you've been made to believe either.
In the end you will find it less stressfull buying a cheap Stratlike guitar and upgrading parts and doing the neckwork. Amazing that you did no check of the neck before installing it. The adjustment point was clearly visible at the moment you took it out. My experience told me to make the neck perfect to your liking before even thinking of connecting it to a body. So, straighten it, flatten the frets, crown them, polish and then you'll be good to go, neckwise. Enjoyed the video though. It's a good warning to people that casually want to throw a guitar together and think it'll be fine. It won't. Keep your videos coming. They are a very good learning experience!
As a fine woodworker and someone who has done a couple kit builds, one from scratch builds and a lot of modding, I am one of the ones clenching my teeth...but also laughing along with you because this is honestly how my first kit build went. Nothing fit, everything required fine tuning and I lost my patience halfway through 😂😂
Even the cheapest guitar will sound good through a nice rig. Something like this is probably the best way to learn setup and what parts do what in your guitar. Everyone that is learning to play should try and build a partscaster at some point.
I play almost exclusively sitting, and I use my strap even when I'm sitting, I like my neck up high and a lot of guitars don't naturally sit the way I want them too. Even my acoustic L48 has a strap on it.
I play the same way, I feel weird not using a strap and I like playing higher up too. It's way easier with my crazy pointy guitar from the 80's and I couldn't play that without it.
It doesn't look like sawdust composite, i honestly think it might be sticks that are glued and compressed, though some of it has some decent banding, but yeah. its weird no matter what.
I’m a big Temu fan. Now I’m a big fan of yours, you’re a nice gentle funny bloke. You do have an absolutely gorgeous wife! Well done on all respects! From a 71 yr old Brit who just missed out on the bidding for Rory’s Tatocaster today (by £888,990) so maybe I’ll treat myself to a kit one! Great stuff!
I just did the samething but I Hollow Body Electric Bass from Amazon, I bought a hollow body 6 string body and then put the bass neck and pick-ups on it. It has a very unique sound.
6:10 That's definitely a plywood, you can get gun stocks with similar patterns. It's too cool, though. I would've never thought to use stuff like that for instruments.
Yeah usually those are made by putting tons of prestained pieces together. They're called laminated necks I think and are sometimes considered even more stable than single piece.
Just a tip. Attach the bridge and make sure the neck and bridge line up, before drilling the holes to neck and body... Especially on the cheaper bodies, the screw holes dont necessarily line up correctly.
Ryan I love your channel to death, but Temu engages in some seriously questionable labor practices. It's disappointing to see you take money/products from them.
indeed. I was rather surprised to hear that they are sponsoring the video. I thought that these, kind of morally questionalbe, collaborations exist only outside my bubble
Drilling neck holes - measure twice cut once. 12th fret has to be midway from nut to bridge. Saddle adjusters can make up for slight errors in neck hole placement.
That neck is not Zebrawood, it is cottonwood layers that have been dyed, heated, and glued. Basically a random plywood. Real zebrawood is endangered. Personally I think it looks cheap and weird, but everyone has their own taste.
oh it looks cheap and weird, and thats why i like it. lol. Buy yeah i think you are right, i know nothing about cottonwood but it looks like sticks that were compressed and glued in some places.

All guitars need setting up after building. This turned out pretty good, for something thrown together out of parts. I think it will be worth the effort of fine-tuning it.
Great Job Ryan. And yeah I think the neck seems to be Zebra wood whether it's some sort of ply or laminated pieces I'm not sure. I've just had a look on Temu & what they do sell are angled maple neck shims, I've only ever seen these available from StewMac and they're quite expensive for what they are. Temu seems to offer them at a more reasonable price I'm gonna grab some to check the quality 👌🏻

The P90 sounds really good. I might hit the neck with some Danish oil to tame the contrast some, but it's a decent looking guitar.. for a Temu parts guitar
Temu has some great tools for the home luthier. I love their nut files....save about 75.00. Just bought a 13.5k telecaster stacked single from temu....used a three way DPDT switch....drilled a hole into the volume tone plate....put the switch in between vol and tone knob. Love it...split the pick up into serial, parallel, humbucker settings for the switch. Gives me four more sounds to the telecaster. Love parallel. It's not monophonic....I took a chance. It wasn't one of the super cheap 6.00 ones....12.99 for it. I like the 13.5K hot humbucker bridge setting. Very quiet pickup. I don't see bridge telepick ups at 13.5k very often. I've wax potted cheap chinese pickups....only one time it didn't work and the pickup stayed monophonic.
I recently bought a roasted neck for a guitar. It was nice but was smaller than the neck pocket on the body. Huge side gaps for days, I had to carefully center it so the string alignment wasn't off but I'm looking into another option outside of ordering it from Temu. Ordering from them is sometimes 50/50 but not horrible although parts from Temu might not always be ideal. I'm considering buying a guitar body to see how that goes.
@@christopherfelser Of course not because Mighty Mite is a straight up legit company that specializes in quality parts and not some obscure factory in China. I was hoping to go cheaper but I guess Mighty Mite is my best option if I want this to work properly in the long run. 👍
It's possible to get reasonably priced high quality parts if your patient and learn what to look for. I've found that most of the generic Chinese stuff isn't worth the headaches.
Not gonna lie… that guitar looks rad, and sounds pretty damn good. If it feels good to play, even better. With a proper set up, that’s a pretty sick guitar. I honestly love it. If you ever do a giveaway on it, put me in the running!
Wondering what the parts would have cost to build that. I know prices are varied and subject to change, but just a general idea ballpark figure would be cool. Maybe I missed that part though. Surprised that all the parts were there and functional for the most part. Very interesting.
it was like a $160ish order, i should have figured that out for the video you are right. I approached it more as a 'can this be done' sort of dirrection.
@@60CycleHumcast Ive given Temu a shot. Just to compare it with price and quantity of direct access to China comparing it to the two other sites and rate it low access and doesnt price beat. For me theres no reason to go there. Last time I checked "guitar" theres was no access through Temu. At $160 for a kit thats a no. Thats $100 over budget especially for a Zebra neck and broken bridge. I know you gotta feed your kids but you dont have to feed them mine.
If it makes your feel any better, I bought a partscaster with a VEGATREM in it and a couple of the bridge hex screws were defective and I had to replace them. SAME problem. It was a COVID guitar so I wrote that off as 'they bought the parts they needed' and got screwed.
I have found that wire colors do not necessarily correspond to expected norms when buying super low-dollar products. That wood is playdonium. It has the same hardness and strength as drilling into buttered toast.
Hey fellow trekcock, I bought a LOVELY Tele style neck from Temu for 30 bucks, maple, like no joke, really well made, skunk stripe, mahogany truss rod hole, frets just needed leveled, but properly spaced and intonated just fine, I would DEFINITELY buy major parts from Temu again 🤷 ps no lacquer etc finish, so perfect, lovely smooth natural finish with Abelone or M.O.P fret marker dots ..not sure which.
Invest in one of the cheap notched straight edges and set the neck straight before installing the strings. Unless you use a heavy gauge, it will give the perfect relief every time. I went with the purple TEMU body, but a black satin neck from Amazon.
@@Peasmouldia I also use an un-notched for checking fret level as opposed to a fret rocker. Simply place it on the far edge and slowly slide it towards you making note of any light coming through. Something else I always do is to try tapping down high frets slightly with the butt of a screwdriver handle as opposed to dragging out the file automatically. And of course I use an un-notched for checking the level of the bridges on both acoustic and electrics.
Make sure you hammer or press those frets into the fretboard first before you start grinding or filing the frets. Its highly likely that humidity changes made the frets pop up higher just as many guitars have fret sprout on the top or bottom of the neck. Good luck Jedi Master.
On the temu website that neck is advertised as zebra wood, which is a real type of wood. That is most definitely not zebra wood so it is definitely some sort of plywood, or how you said sticks glued together lol.
I just bought a loaded red-wine tortise-shell Strat pickguard with HSS Seymour Duncans for about $150 there. Not everything chinese cost (and is worth) $20.
Good luck. We have enough trouble selling our own merch. Not exactly a cash cow. Also dude. It’s clear parody. Your inability to recognize that is a you problem.
The neck looks like PSL (Parallel-Strand Lumber). It is an engineered wood consisting of strips of wood glued together. I would imagine the resonance of the wood/glue combo would cause the strings to sound more like a resin reinforced maple neck and sound much less warm than a softer wood. That is just my guess.
8:13 "this is gonna get sketchy guys" Yeaaaah kinda knew it was going to go that way. There are some decent parts on the web but not a whole lot of standardization. Better to buy a cheap kit or "REAL" parts from vendors. I have an extra 2 guitars from just putting spare parts together. Love both of them too. Congrats on the build and making guitar sounds!

I love the individually bagged tuners. It wouldn't be from China if it didn't unnecessarily waste a bunch of plastic! BTW, buzzing in the lower frets, like the first 6 or 7, is usually an indication of the neck needing some relief. You may have overtightened the truss rod. Before making any more adjustments, let it settle in under string tension for a bit. That material is just getting used to being a guitar now for the first time. Buzz in the upper frets is a good sign that the action needs to be raised a little bit. Also, you should always detune your strings before making adjustments to the action, whether up or down. Hope this helps you in taming that beast, lol. Good luck, and have a happy holiday!

I was worried about that to when I saw the price. She should not wear those.
...don't stare at the sun, even with sunglasses
This. I got some knock-off Oakley sunglasses sent to me as a part of a scam and they did NOT block UV when I tested them.
Great job! I'm in the process of ordering a kit, this was very helpful
Do not buy that neck, it has not trust rod, that will result in you not being able to adjust your trust rod when you have neck bowing
It's easy to assemble a guitar from parts for me the hardest part is always the finish
Because of you and your channel, I, a extreme metal guitarist, just ordered my dad a Surf Green Strat HSS
Oh man loved the vid. But seriously that was the best demonstration of microphonic I've seen! Funny but really effective! Greetings from Ireland 😎
The neck is a composite wood. Kind of like sawdust and some other materials. Still cool
It doesn't look like sawdust composite, i honestly think it might be sticks that are glued and compressed, though some of it has some decent banding, but yeah. its weird no matter what.
It’s not sawdust. Thin pieces of dyed wood smashed together under very high pressure.
I had a lot of fun watching, but I'll take a pass on building a "Temucaster" of my own. Lol
But you can't go wrong with those cheap shades 😎
Love 'em!
I just did the samething but I Hollow Body Electric Bass from Amazon, I bought a hollow body 6 string body and then put the bass neck and pick-ups on it. It has a very unique sound.

That's definitely a plywood, you can get gun stocks with similar patterns.
This was HIGHLY entertaining! Thanks for this!
It's all good, but it might be best to put on the E strings before drilling neck holes. I had one not go well... Fun build!
It was a fairly tight fit in the neck pocket so I wasn’t too worried about getting it straight
Cool cool cool... Shows the CNC accuracy is strong in their process. Thanks again, now I wanna try it!
Instead of putting in the strings, you can use dental floss. Good idea, though.
Drilling neck holes - measure twice cut once. 12th fret has to be midway from nut to bridge. Saddle adjusters can make up for slight errors in neck hole placement.
I started thinking about trying this two weeks ago, and then here is this video, in my recommended. Must be a sign to just do it haha
@@60CycleHumcast all of my guitars are cheap, but only I’m weird.🤣
With the setup, I would check if the neck is lined up with the body, it could be at a slight angle even though the neck itself is straight.
I love the Braxie shirt! If you ever come to Braxton County, WV I’d love to buy you dinner and hang. I’m not far from there, just over an hour away in Beckley, WV. Thanks for repping our cryptid!
All guitars need setting up after building. This turned out pretty good, for something thrown together out of parts. I think it will be worth the effort of fine-tuning it.
I believe the neck is made out of dryed out dairy queen chocolate and vanilla ice cream? Taste it to be sure? You're welcome! 🤘😅 Happy Holidays!😊
OMG! When you were shimming the neck and the neck fell off… I fell off my couch, laughing😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Temu seems to offer them at a more reasonable price
I'm gonna grab some to check the quality 👌🏻
just use folded paper😂
kidding, please don’t
I ordered some of those full neck shims off Temu, they confused the angle with the thickness of the wood. Not good 😂 No angle on them but 5mm thick 😂
@@locky828 you know last time I searched for them it seemed to be only from stewmac but now they seem to be at a few places, I didn't realise until after I made the comment lol

‘Is the neck straight’ 😂😂😂 not to the body when you held it up😂😂
The P90 sounds really good.
Mighty mite has never let me down.
@@christopherfelser Of course not because Mighty Mite is a straight up legit company that specializes in quality parts and not some obscure factory in China. I was hoping to go cheaper but I guess Mighty Mite is my best option if I want this to work properly in the long run. 👍
@@bloodguts6786 fair point.
It's possible to get reasonably priced high quality parts if your patient and learn what to look for. I've found that most of the generic Chinese stuff isn't worth the headaches.
I like the way you did this video. I sort of went through a pickguard problem when I worked on my squier (purple) strat.
Those guitars behind him look AI generated 😂
Mrs Ryan looks like a proper soccer mom. I like that.
Not gonna lie… that guitar looks rad, and sounds pretty damn good. If it feels good to play, even better. With a proper set up, that’s a pretty sick guitar.
I honestly love it. If you ever do a giveaway on it, put me in the running!
Good job, thoroughly enjoyed!
@@60CycleHumcast For sure, I get that. Who knew it could actually be built from solely Temu parts? No I! Lol.
@@60CycleHumcast Can it be done? yes. Would it be better to spend the same on a Squier or Harley Benton? A resounding YES.
@@pasteye1671 I agree.
If it makes your feel any better, I bought a partscaster with a VEGATREM in it and a couple of the bridge hex screws were defective and I had to replace them. SAME problem. It was a COVID guitar so I wrote that off as 'they bought the parts they needed' and got screwed.
That neck looks like it was made from thousands of satay skewers all laminated together!
Honestly really like the neck with the exception of the fretboard. That neck with an ebony fretboard though would honestly be gorgeous.
I have found that wire colors do not necessarily correspond to expected norms when buying super low-dollar products. That wood is playdonium. It has the same hardness and strength as drilling into buttered toast.
Hey fellow trekcock, I bought a LOVELY Tele style neck from Temu for 30 bucks, maple, like no joke, really well made, skunk stripe, mahogany truss rod hole, frets just needed leveled, but properly spaced and intonated just fine, I would DEFINITELY buy major parts from Temu again 🤷 ps no lacquer etc finish, so perfect, lovely smooth natural finish with Abelone or M.O.P fret marker dots ..not sure which.
can you send temu link for the neck you bought for your build. cheers 😀🎶🎸
Really? Temu? Shame!... *Ding*
Shame flute!
Love playing with guitar building and this turned out great 😂. However nowhere near as well as them glasses fit Lauren! 😊
Invest in one of the cheap notched straight edges and set the neck straight before installing the strings. Unless you use a heavy gauge, it will give the perfect relief every time. I went with the purple TEMU body, but a black satin neck from Amazon.
An un-notched straight edge for the neck angle would save some vexation too...I have both. Cheap and surprisingly accurate.
I love how Lauren(?) was so much more interested in the sunglasses and the mushroom night light than your guitar build. Reality bites.
My wife is the same in that regard.
She is so cute an talented!
Fun build loosely goosey style. Like to see an update video after the tweaks and how it holds up. Pros cons after the fact! Thanks bro
On the temu website that neck is advertised as zebra wood, which is a real type of wood. That is most definitely not zebra wood so it is definitely some sort of plywood, or how you said sticks glued together lol.
For reference, that neck is a laminate wood. Basically a nice form of plywood. I have several stocks to rifles with similar patterns.
I once, many years ago, played one of Greg Lake's Alembic basses that he only ever used in the studio and it had never had strap buttons.
I need the make one but with jazzmaster parts of AliExpress
I just bought a loaded red-wine tortise-shell Strat pickguard with HSS Seymour Duncans for about $150 there. Not everything chinese cost (and is worth) $20.
It's "Engineered" Zebra Wood. They sell it in most of the Chinese kits.

Ya got a new subscriber, first time watching you, very enjoyable.
The neck looks like PSL (Parallel-Strand Lumber). It is an engineered wood consisting of strips of wood glued together. I would imagine the resonance of the wood/glue combo would cause the strings to sound more like a resin reinforced maple neck and sound much less warm than a softer wood. That is just my guess.
warm neck and a biting bridge sounds like you have a winner of a guitar

I read this in Kevin Mccallisters voice. Like in that scene where he finds a picture of buzzes girlfriend? That exact line.
"The Click Bait" ? Hah, Love Ya , Buddy.
Frets probably need a file and polish aswell
Does that green guitar in the back on the left have tri-sonics installed in it?
