Mother flying fox caring for her baby

    A black flying fox (Pteropus alecto) cradling her baby with her wings while she cares for it. Like all mammals, female black flying foxes are dedicated and caring mothers. Flying foxes are a keystone species, essential to the continuation of Australian forests as we know them. Many Australian rainforest tree species have evolved alongside bats, and therefore predominantly release their pollen and nectar at night, when bird and insect pollinators are inactive. Without bats, these tree species will progressively die out, and eventually take with them the other species which depend on them, in a cascade of extinctions.
    Additionally, unlike most bird pollinators, bats are willing and able to fly long distances between isolated pockets of natural vegetation, performing the vital functions of dispersal of pollen and seed to overcome the problems created by habitat fragmentation. This is of vastly heightened importance following the catastrophic fires of 2019/2020, which incinerated areas of rainforest which rarely, if ever, experience fire, and are therefore not well evolved to recover from fire damage.
    In 2008 the shooting of flying foxes was banned in QLD after the government’s own Animal Welfare Advisory Committee found it was inhumane. In 2012 however, a LNP government overturned this decision by making flying foxes exempt from the humaneness requirements under our state legislation. Shooting a fast moving mammal in the dark is difficult and dangerous, with some studies showing only 5% are immediately killed when shot. Others are incapacitated and left to suffer for hours or days, often pregnant or with babies on board. These are incredibly intelligent mammals, very similar in many ways to your domestic dog or cat at home.
    A QLD government funded study found that when using shooting as a crop protection measure 'crop losses are often still extensive'. So the Queensland government has established that shooting is not only inhumane, it's also ineffective - yet still allows it to happen, legally. The use of full canopy netting over orchards however, when correctly installed on a frame, has been highly successful at preventing flying foxes accessing the fruit.
    A final note: If you see a dead black flying fox at this time of year, particularly if it has been electrocuted on powerlines, don't touch it, but please call 1800 ANIMAL to report it, as there may be a live baby under the wing. In Queensland call BCRQ on 0488 228 134. bats.org.au/

      Hello Andy, agreed! Like most mammal mothers, flying fox mothers will search desperately for a lost pup, and take risks to get it back.

    What a treat, bats! Ever since the bushfires of 2019/20 we haven’t seen or heard bats or lyrebirds.

      Hello Bec R, that's terrible! I am so sorry for your loss; the whole world is a poorer place, now that we have lost so much in one catastrophic season. Bats would bring back much needed colonising seed to devastated areas, if only there were patches of surviving canopy to attract them.

    well captured - I get the grey headed flying fox here feeding, but not roosting, also several microbats. They are much misunderstood aren't they?

    • @GubanaNatureRefuge
      @GubanaNatureRefuge  2 года назад +9

      Hello KG, great to hear from you :)
      We don't see grey-headed much here, mostly blacks, and the little reds when they are migrating through - down for summer, or up for winter. The general attitude towards bats is gut wrenching to be honest. They are incredibly intelligent, sensitive mammals. Without them we'd be screwed - and as I like to tell people, if you love tequila, you should love bats; the lesser long-nosed bat is the primary pollinator of blue agave, the base ingredient in tequila.

      @@GubanaNatureRefuge interesting, I will raise my glass to them!
      the grey-headed of course are listed as vulnerable, and they are the primary pollinators of the 3 primary koala food trees. people misunderstand pretty much all nature sadly. thanks for your work 🦇
