I switched from yoga to somatics at age 65 due to yoga injuries. The best time to do somatics is anytime. Just do it and it will show its amazing benefits over time. I had no idea how to relax my muscles until I did somatics for a few months. The pandiculating came naturally after I persisted in my practice.
I love this! I agree. Any time is a good time to pandiculate - just as animals do. Once you find yourself pandiculating naturally when you feel tension building up you know you're reconnecting to your body and your brain is back in charge.
I’ve been doing somatics for a few months. I do feel better, definitely not 100 percent but getting better. How my question is do somatics make you more flexible? Because I could never ever touch my toes. The closest I can get is right below the knee. Even when I was a kid. I feel like I’m doing something wrong because I’m not getting more flexible. do you have any suggestions?
Yes, Somatic Movements can help you with your flexibility. Inflexibility is generally the result of tension in the center of your body - in your back, waist, and front. If the muscles around your spine are tight, your back and front will be tight. When you learn to pandiculate instead of stretch you will start to reduce excess tension in your muscles which contribute to challenges with flexibility. Stretching makes you tighter; pandiculation gets your brain (the command center of your muscles) back in control of the muscles so it can reduce tension, making your muscles softer and more able to move easily. Hopefully that helps.
