As a Queen fan of 35 years and having seen them live many times (including at Live Aid) you have to react to their live stuff as Queen were the only band that sounded BETTER live than in the studio. That's what I love about Queen... I don't agree that the live is 'better' than studio, not always. In fact they are one of the few bands where you can take your pick and massively enjoy both!
Live has lots of energy and ad-libs/variations and crowd participation, while studio has all the harmonies and guitar orchestrations that set Queen apart!
      Best of both!

      John didn't sing.
      It's just a fact.
Many many interviews with the band tell us that the whole thing was done with three singers and multiple tracks.
Each would sing every backing vocal in each part (different keys) and the best mixdown to suit the style of the song was used.
Inspired by the Wall Of Sound created by Phil Spectre for the Beach Boys (who the boys in this video forgot when listing great vocal bands!).
The three guys just happened to have certain qualities (and abilities) to each of their voices that, when they merged, they sounded magical.

Queen never stuck to one genre like most bands. Freddie could sing songs that went back from 20s to 30s with Seaside Rendezvous and 50s with Crazy little thing called love. They were the first to do what was considered the first thrash metal of its kind with Stone Cold Crazy..Freddie spat some bars there!! Freddie could sing rock, pop, opera, blues and jazz....Dreamers ball is a bluesy jazz feel... cool cat is in the falsetto register. Freddie did opera with Montserrat Caballe too. Listen to Somebody to love live in Montreal 81. Roger in that same concert sang I'm in love with my car!... check them all out. Freddie had a 4 octave voice range f2-f5..possibly f6.

Queen were a band that were (almost) always better live! Obviously they can’t replicate the multi layered harmonies of this song on stage, but they brought whole different level of energy to the live performance, to all their live performances. So you simply must watch this live at Montreal 1981. It is next level amazing. Please, please, please! DO MORE QUEEN! From Montreal, Dragon Attack, Save Me, Keep Yourself Alive. From Milton Keynes, Fat Bottomed Girls, Action This Day. And perhaps the best concert of them all in terms of energy and crowd interaction, Wembley 1986. One Vision, Tie Your Mother Down, Under Pressure, Another One Bites The Dust and Now I’m Here. Loved your reaction guys, and I love Queen.

Fun fact: they were not really vocally trained, Roger (the drummer) knew the basics cause he used to be a choir boy at this school as a child, actually in the beginning of Queen he used to give Freddie some singing tips since he wasn't that good yet. Queen has some amazing songs like I'm In Love With My Car, Tenement Funster and Drowse with Roger singing and She Makes Me, '39 and Sleeping On The Sidewalk with Brian on the vocals. John (the bass player) is the only one who only sang backing vocals at concerts but never in studio since he claimed he wasn't as good as the others.

There was a band in Cleveland (MSB...Michael Stanley Band) in the 80's and you should check them out. They were popular in the Midwest and Florida. They have quite a few songs on RUclips, Anyway their song "Someone Like You" is sung by their second lead singer. Michael Stanley just passed away recently.

Roger Taylor had a bit of vocal training when he was in the Truro Cathedral School Choir but nothing more than that. They are all multi instrumentalists too.

Many hits that ate underrated because they were overshadowed - and more so than many other bands of the era still sound fresh and unique today. For some overshadowed gems try : You And I, It’s Late, Save Me, long Away, Drowse, Tenement Funster, Machines, Also with Queen you kind of get a 2fer - the studio version is one version then the live versions are often brilliant in their own right - not just trying to replay the album songs but recreating them for a live environment and ad libbing along the way

Rather than take you guys in the direction of this song live, I'd like to request another song. My Fairy King, which is the song where Freddie created his stage name, referring to his mom as Mother Mercury. It's beautiful and has a fantasy theme. Really early and really underrated.

Queen is as talented off the stage as on! They had no vocal training, nevertheless, they had brains, beauty and amazing talent! Can't say just how much I love Freddie Mercury and Queen! ❤ YOU MUST LISTEN TO QUEENS SONG" UNDER PRESSURE " with DAVID BOWIE! It will blow your mind, especially when you hear the bass riff!

Most beautiful and "intentional" version (with the gospel-style "call-backs" - that's Aretha's influence - takin' us to church) - however, one of the most moving is the Montreal 1981 live- with video! thanks, guys - (better singers than Freddie? I suppose "best" singer is very subjective....) BTW - Freddie, Brian and Roger were the singers... John, not so much -- but he did fill in a bit in live shows...Roger was the high-vocal star in the live shows... all while playing incredible drums...

I saw them in concert in Dallas Reunion Arena. The concert in this video looks just like the one I went to. Freddie was wearing the liaitards, he would have a white one on, then it would change color to yellow, then black, I'm not sure how they did it, every song he looked different, and the guitarist had that same outfit on too. I loved the concert.

Apart from the bassist, they all sang. Their previous band Smile already had some pretty good vocal harmonies made by Brian May, Roger Taylor and their previous singer Tim Staffell. By the way, Tim Staffell also had a band after Smile, called Morgan. Awesome keyboards-based progressive rock. They released two albums, "Nova Solis" (1972) and "The Sleeper Wakes" (recorded in 1973, but only released in 1977).

The backup singing often sounded like a whole choir instead of just the four of them because they would layer the vocals during recording - the entire band was incredibly hands on with the recording process. This was back when they used actual tape reels instead of computers, so on their more complex songs it could take hours upon hours and the tape would be worn thin (according to Brian and Roger when discussing the making of “Black Queen”, for example). And nope, they weren’t vocally trained at all, not even Freddie! Some of the vocal layering was done with just Freddie’s voice over and over itself in different keys - the very beginning of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, for example, is just him, though the operatic section includes all of their voices. Check this song out live in Montreal! It’s one of Freddie’s best vocal performances ever.

On some albums theres a lot of overdubbs to create a choir effect
Freddie was so good at double tracking it would faze, unless they wanted that effect he had to conciously do the tracks differently to stop that happening

Roger and Brian are both lead singers in their own right but not they nor Mercury were professionally trained musicians or singers. They were just crazy good and really perfectionists with every aspect of their music. They took a long time to produce albums because good just wasn't good enough, it had to be perfect. I love Queen, still, after all these years and I have been following them since the very beginning, as soon as they hit the US with their first single.
