Every preparedness minded person should get their General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) license. See how you can apply for your license in less than 10 minutes.
Start Application Here: wireless.fcc.gov/uls/
Updates 3/2019:
GMRS Licenses are now good for 10 years! Same cost as before.
After the FCC Part 95 Rule Changes, the MS350R radios recommended above are discontinued and becoming hard to find. Here are some for details on this...
FRS/GMRS handheld radios that will allow you to access the GMRS repeaters are no longer available. This has to do partially due to differences with the requirements between FRS and GMRS even though most of the channels are shared. Here are a few different recommended options based on your need:
A) Handheld Radio with GMRS Repeater Channels
No “clamshell” or “off the shelf” radios available. Will have to custom program one of the radios below:
Baofeng UV-5R (www.amazon.com/dp/B007H4VT7A/...
Baofeng GT-3WP (Waterproof)
www.amazon.com/dp/B01BSL58Z6/...
Anytone AT-868UV
www.amazon.com/dp/B076W9DYM3/...
B) Mobiles with GMRS Repeater Channels
To access the GMRS repeaters without doing custom programming, check out the Midland mobiles below. But this is about the only option.
MXT115 Micromobile (15 Watt Power)
www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUGZ5XC/...
MXT400 Micromobile (40 Watt Power)
www.amazon.com/dp/B01N0X0LHF/...
C) Good Non-Repeater FRS/GMRS Handhelds
If you are looking a good quality handheld FRS radio (no repeaters) here are our recommendations:

Midland GXT1000VP4

That intro almost gives me a heart attack 😂
Spent an hour this afternoon trying to find this form. With your video completed the entire process in ten minutes, Thanks much!
I followed the process as shown in this video and received my license in less than 24 hours. GREAT video, thank you so very much!
Thank you for your very informal video! I've been looking into getting my gmrs license for a while now and couldn't figure out how until I saw your video. Thanks again!
Very nice tutorial. I designed training programs for IBM for 15 years. This is explained in great detail and easy to follow
This was very informative, thanks for the vid. Great job. Got my license confirmation today.
I really appreciate the fact that you went through there step-by-step it made it so much easier I probably wouldn’t have been able to figure it out if I was on my own thanks again
Excellent video. I was able to complete the application very quickly! Thank you for creating and posting.
Thank you demystifying the process about where to go and how to do it!
I watched your video and went on the web and applied at 11:00 am on nov 6 then at 1:30 am nov 7 got an email from the fcc saying that I had been approved (I didn't think that they worked past 5 pm lol) pretty good I got my licence and call sign in less then 24 hours, thank you for the help 😎
when you register do they email you the frn #
@@DTOXPUNK they did mine
@@DaveSquibbSr actually i looked up my name its on file now lol
@@DTOXPUNK good deal 😎
Thanks! It took a bit more than 10 minutes as things have changed a bit since this video first came out, but it helped tremendously!
Thank you for posting this, easy process once you know where to go.
Leave it to the government to make things more complicated than they should be.
Thanks for the info. I got my license today!
Thank you! The FCC site is not user intuitive. Your video was a godsend! The site is slightly different now but I was able to find the right login areas.
Good! Didnt see online how long it takes to get call sign. You explained it. Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial! The only step I was stuck on when I was doing it was the license code. I was looking for GMRS and the code is ZA. Who would have thought it was at the bottom? lol
Thank You. I would have never figured this out myself.
Thank you for making this video. I followed your video step by step, thanks again.
Thank you. Just subscribed. Will check out the GMRS Radios you recommended.
Thank you very much for sharing this! Using your tutorial, I just registered for my GMRS license. 🙂
This was great step by step, BIG help thank you
Really easy to follow presentation. Nice job.
That was an excellent presentation! I felt very comfortable navigating the fcc site. Thank You!
Couldn't have done it without you...lol...Thank you.
Thank you for this information, I just registered for my gmrs license.
Nicely done and thank you!
Your video was very helpful, many thanks.
Thank you for the tuturial!
Thank you sir, very helpful
This was a big help. Thank you
Excellent video, thank you!!!
Great work every step of the way sir.
Thanks for posting this video !
I just applied for a new GMRS license ! ....so much better than CB...
Thanks for the feedback. Glad it was helpful!
Good info thanks. I watched it at 1.5 times play speed.
I trying to update my license and thank you. Gov made this site completely complex for a person obeying the law. Especially for a radio that works about 6 blocks and most buy them and never registered. Had a boat check and pulled out copy of letter for radio and they said they don’t need it.
I highly recommend this video . thanks
Big help, thanks!
Thank you for this video. I filled out the application and it was accepted but I never saw a "payment" page. Now it just say application was submitted?? Any advice on how to pay and complete the process? Thanks
Great video. It’s very helpful when trying to navigate the confusing FCC website. The website has changed a bit (as of March 2020), but the video still gets you through the process. Thank you!
Thank you! Very helpful
Made it so simple even I could do it, Thanks. darn site went into limbo after payment went through...
Thanks for the feedback. Glad it helped!
Thank you for the help. I really appreciate your Video.
Thnxs 4 uploading and sharing
Can you update this video? A lot has changed and people still need this info. Thanks.
What do you do with form 159 once you applied for your GMRS license?
How do you get a password for the license manager log in page? Its not the same as the fcc password.
So can you just get a form from fcc office highlighted on the lines you need to fill out, then send in with a money order that's be ok too. Some people can wait longer no big deal.
thank you so much for your help ✌😎👍
My big question is there a way to get print out procedure on paper? How to apply for the license. The video version does not work for me because it's hard to remember what questions to answer and what to leave blank.
Thank you for your help.
I got 2 GMRS certified radios 2 FRS GMRS radios and a base and a couple uv-5r radios though not legal for GMRS I got it programmed to GMRS and MURS specs. I have a GMRS license.
I'm going to get negative feedback for this but I do support needing a license since we had a few jackasses broadcasting 50w on an FRS band wide channel.
And they went channel to channel putting their mic next to the speaker and broadcasting feedback.
We also had a condo construction site using FES bands their radios (radioddity FRS radios unless programmed will broadcast wide channel high power on all GMRS / FRS channels) one block away from the fire department dispatch and tower which they weren't too thrilled about.
Thank you! Very understandable and made things quick and easy!
Thank you for the video, the website was driving me nuts lol. Would have spent alot of wasted time trying to figure out that I need to choose ZA for the service.
where do I get the frn#? On the same fcc web sight
I already have my license but is expired how do I renew it . it keep telling me I need to submit a waiver
thank you so much this helped alot!
The Amazon link to the handheld Motorola radios only shows used radios for sale. Has it been discontinued? If so, a recommended radio?
This will be a long winded answer, but wanted to explain the situation...so here goes...

So to anyone who can answer this..
I just got a midland mxt handheld two way radio set for Xmas. Wanted to use them for a convoy on the highway?
Is the fcc license required? If so like is it a real threat not to have it If I’m just talking to like my brother while we are on a trip who’d be in another car? How serious is this?
Can my UV5R be monitored in DC? That's further than even the bubble packs.
cool just filed this video helped alot...
this is the best video i have found to help for this. but, the awesome government updated all their sites so nothing in this viedo is current. would you be able to create an updated video?
Thanks for the suggestion however, not at this time. Will keep it on the radar though.
Thanks for the video. the FCC is ripping people off with this $70.00 fee.
Less than $0.02 a day is a ripoff? Are you dumb or just stupid?
I agree.
And I heard it is $75 now.
@@TenthPrestegeisaFAG Nope you are both however. For thinking the charge at any amout is ok. O don't forget the agreement for unwarranted search or seizure.
I tried to get the gmrs liciesne but the fcc is closed..what do I do????
Great Video. I was able to submit the application however, due to the government shutdown, I could not get to the payment page. So I guess I'll wait and see what happen after things are up and running again. KC5FOE
hello, i want to apply for my fcc GROL license but i can't find anything on the website. What am I doing wrong? Thank you
How come I type in the ULS address that you show in your video and I don't get to the page you're showing. The FCC web page is impossible to navigate to get my GMRS license, it's a deterrent to even trying.
Sir, does your GMRS License callsign-number differ from your "FRN" and/or your Amateur Radio callsign?
Thank you Sir, very much indeed, for helping us "navigate" thru the FCC-licensing procedure, for a GMRS License.
Yes it does. The FRN is your FCC Registration Number. It is different than your licenses. Your FRN number is assigned to you and you can have multiple licenses under your FRN. For example, you can have your amateur radio license and your GMRS license under the same FRN number. If you were a student at a school, it would be the same as your student ID which you would use to register for multiple classes. Hope that helps.
Talon Survival
Yes Sir, very useful.
Thank you for your quick and personal response.
Oscar
@@TalonSurvival How would the FCC track these if you were using them in vehicles and four wheelers?
The FRN is so you don’t have to type your social security number on every government license application you fill out.
I used the tutorial and at the end it doesn’t show an application submitted but they took my money. When I search my file number and FRN it doesn’t come up. Mad 😡
How do you get your call sign?
I tried to apply today 7/7/2021 and the fee is still $70. Did they change their mind to stay the fee at $70?
It looks like the licenses are good for 10 years now!
….and down to $35 now. (5/2022)
@@mencken8 Wow, I was wondering where this comment came from. Its an oldie. Yep $35 now, I guess things change.
How much time be allowed to receive your FCC GMRS license ? I have waited 14 days is that normal?
Still $70 as of 1/20/22 for GMRS License. Supposed to be $35 by now. I quit and saved, hoping it will be less in a month
How long does it take to get the license
How long does it take for the FRN number.
Can you make your own calllsign?
thank you for posting this, made the whole process simple and easy with no guesswork. :)
Is it required to fill out the 159 form?
I didn't get a email confirmation receipt when I submitted my license. Is that normal? How long did it take you to get an email response after submitting? Thank you
It took approximately two business days for my email confirmation to come through. Be sure to check your email spam and junk filter. Sometimes they get hidden away there. You can also check the status of your license at wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/searchGmrs.jsp . When you license is approved, it will show up in the list.
Ok so what is the difference on this gmrs license and ham license ? I have a pair of cp200 motorolla n i just want them to talk to each other n use a repeater to extend range around my area n to use on trips . I hear ham license is bout $15 dollars also n you do the same thing. What is the difference in both license n radios . One license is $70 gmrs and ham is $15 dollars .
How do you obtain an FRN number
I applied almost a year ago, paid my money and as of yet received my license. So, I lost my money and no license.
When I submitted my form for payment all it says is Plastic_Card and a number of some sort but not any way to pay
The more I get into building my SUV for simple overlanding the more I think I'm just gonna hike everywhere all this stuff adds up FAST
The last info that I saw says the new $35 fees with start April 19, 2022
So how do you get your FRN number
Very helpful - FCC worst layout (worse than FDA)
Thank you. So 14 days to get my call sign via email?
Could be. Some get it in a few hours. Some in a few days.
How do you get a frn #
Thanks
Can I pick a call sign or is it just assigned
It is assigned by the FCC.
Early in the video, you said the license price was $70 for 5?years. I believe that changed to $35 now for 10 years
Did the FCC change the cos of the GMRS license? I heard there is a less costly license.
Still $ 70
Question...if I have a gmrs liciesne can I talk on repeaters too????
On GMRS repeaters yes, on Amateur Radio Repeaters no.
Question should my 14dbi gmrs agyantenna and tram 1480 be good antenna set up????
How do I get a frn number I need help
is there a test you have to take ? or just pay the 70?
ok thank you
No test for GMRS, just the application process and fee. In case you haven’t seen it, check out our article for more benifits of GMRS here: talonsurvival.com/why-every-prepper-should-have-a-gmrs-license/
Good video, I would tone down the noise at the beginning however as it is too loud and annoying.......
Noted. Thank you for the suggestion. We will keep that in mind for future videos.
Do u get a hard copy
You use too, but not anymore. I believe the FCC stopped mailing them out. You are responsible for printing your own hard copy now once you receive your electronic version. Others who recently got their licenses may be able to provide more info from their latest experiences.
How do I get a FRN #
Here are a few how-to guides from the FCC to walk you thought the process in their CORES system.
1) Register for a CORES Username and Password (apps.fcc.gov/cores/html/Register_New_Account.htm)
2) Register for a new FRN (apps.fcc.gov/cores/html/Register_New_FRN.htm)
