1:49 If you are using the latest version of blender and you are trying to find the "vector" button, Select the line, Right Click, Click "Set handle type", and click "vector". Hopefully this helped some of you guys.
13:45 make sure to add Mix RGB, not mix shader, or your hair will turn bright magenta XD he does it super fast so it's hard to tell which ones he uses so be careful to pay attention.
Tip: If you enable Node Wrangler _(Edit > Preferences > Add-ons),_ you can hold Alt+Rightclick and drag over two nodes to create the correct mix node, already hooked-up. ;)
I like how you say you expect people to already be familiar with shading, but you go through the process at a decent pace and actually explain why you are using different nodes . . . both things very few "for beginners" shading tutorials bother to do.
UPDATE: I tried it and i can't describe how amazing and helpful this was, i was able to create a great looking hair in a very short time, and in a very easy way that allows a lot of control, and the shader can be customized and it's gorgeous! can't wait for more tutorials, especially the softbody animation ones! The previously available tutorials were quite harder, the use of the path curve here makes it much easier than the bezier curve, I'm definitely going to try this, and the shading was crazy! Thanks a lot!
hey I'm super glad this is working for you! would love to see any results you got if you're willing to share, shoot me an email or a message on instagram!
What I love about this method is that there’s literally no way to screw it up. No matter what you do, it’ll always end up looking good. And if it doesn’t look good, you just have to make some small adjustments and it’ll look great.
4 years later, on Blender 3.6, and this tutorial works like a charm, the only warning I'd give is that the UV option thing that lets you edit the Bezier Curve's UVs is gone now, so if you make some curves with flipped UVs you'll have to flip the curves to match the others, or you'll have to set the curves to meshes, which means you can't edit the curves after. It was my own mistake, and I wanted to mention it for anyone else before they made it too.
I am starting out in blender to become a virtual barber. The reason, is for my Head 3D Scans that fail due to scanning hair being near on impossible. This tutorial is incredible. thank you for making the time to create an audibly perfect and visually stimulating (I have sat through hours of life stealing videos believe me...) This video tutorial has saved me hours of messing around. thank you once again.
this guide is a godsend. ive been putting off the hair on this model for about 6 months because nothing id found before suited the stylization i was going for. i am grateful
Nice clear presentation. Just a quick tip (which you probably already know). When I begin modelling I add an "empty" to the centre of the scene and label it "mirror object" (It can be locked in place and hidden). Then when I use the Mirror Modifier from the drop-down menu in the properties panel, I check the "Mirror Object" box and select it as my mirror object. This keeps all mirrored parts of a model perfectly aligned with each other and won't shift position when editing the mesh.
This is an excellent tutorial. I've seen quite a few of these types of tutorials, but yours is the first that helped me complete a fully realized hair model.
Great use of the Anisotropic shader: take something, bend it to your needs! If you're going to start making tutorials, I think you have all it takes to make a good teacher!
This is *amazing*! I've been use curve modeling for hair for a while but it had never occurred to me to incorporate stray hairs into the bevel. The result is gorgeous.
It is 10/19/2022, I am using Blender 3.0, and this video and some of the comments are extremely helpful in helping me create hair for my character. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!
This tutorial should be the go-to tutorial for hair rendering in Blender without using particles. I'm using Blender 3.0 but even now the methods shown in this video opened up tons of possibilities to me that I didn't even realize were there, and are lessons that can be taken into modelling anything with curves. By far one of the best hair tutorials I've found yet that touches on everything just enough to get you to great looking stuff and teach you a lot in the process. Not only were the methods excellent, but the video itself was great at showing everything. For a first tutorial, you really nailed it dude.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you. I just couldn't quite get it working from other tutorials/videos. This was by far the best one I've seen, and had it working for me in no time.
It's the best tutorial I've ever seen. There was no more trouble to understand even though I didn't know English. I'd be happy if you could make more tutorials. Thank you.
I was having trouble figuring out how to color the hair once I modelled it like this, because a plain line can't be unwrapped, so 11:10 was a big help. Thanks!
This is your first tutorial? Wow, you blew it out of the water! This helped me a lot! I learned a few things I never even thought about in my 3 or 4 years using Blender.
Man, I'm shocked, what an incredible job, I think I've never been so impressed with the practicality of doing something that seems to be so complicated, congratulations!
I'm still a novice and have always been intimidated anytime nodes are introduced, but this was really helpful and really convinced me that it's probably a good time to put the fear aside and start learning. I love the transparency applied to the hair and root ends. That's what brought me here. I plan to revisit this once I have a better understanding of each of the node functions. Thanks for taking the time to share your creativity.
awesome ,thanks a lot for that tutorial, i tried to model a lot of times hair with curves but always it look weird, and with your video i did something awesome for my first time with curves
Wow, this is the best blender hair tutorial on youtube. I hope someone will make a tutorial on how to retopo/reduce the number of faces becuse this method is the fastest and more beautifull that i've tried
This is a really cool tutorial, appreciated a lot that you didn't treat us as little babies who needed every single shortcut etc. And went right to the point.
from my 5 years of digging the internet and teaching my self blender, this has become my most favorite tutorial. thank you so much! well explained and professional
This tutorial war SO informative!!! still very much up to date and explained in way so it was easy to understand and follow. what a shame there are no more tutorials of you!
I'm kicking myself so hard for not seeing this when you posted! I was goofing around with hair cards and faux particles - always circling around this but never discovering it. This is a top gem even as Blender 2.8 steams along!
This is so wonderful and exactly what i was looking for. I would love to see your hair animation process, and would even be willing to donate/pay for it. Simply one of the best blender tutorials I have watched! Thank you so much.
This will be a *most useful* technique. I had always wondered if there was a way to model hair from curves, and here we go. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. :)
Wow great looking results, the shader really took the geo hair I was creating to another level. The added floating splines/geometry on the bevel shape is a unique solution.
10:53 NOTE FOR ANYONE FOLLOWING THIS POST 2.8. Use UV for mapping is no longer an option because the program automatically does this for you. This tutorial still works wonderfully. I'm sure there are better and or more streamlined ways (such as using the hair emitter for a different kind of look) However this serves its purpose just as it had years passed for me. Pancake you may be unkown but this tutorial was A+ You should update it!
I came across this tut by pure chance, this is really the best dealing with hair from from curves. It would have been great if I stumbled on this before I started making my graphic novel "Amarla Dane, strands of destiny" but it is never too late to improve :) Great and detailed tutorial, keep'em coming please!
Amazing tutorial. Can't believe it's your first. You are a saint for showing this super cool way for making hair. Please continue doing tutorials, the Blender community truly needs people like you. Says a former 3dsMax user, now Blender.
This was the exact video I was looking for. I found a lot of videos and how to make hair from curves but this is a really good one for materials. Thank you so much for this!
1:45 to change handles to vector in 2.8, go to edit mode for your circle, select "Control Points" next to "segments" under the selection toolbar and choose "change handle type" to vector. this will help when trying to shape your circle similar to his :)
This is amazing and so well explained thank you so much for taking the time and effort to put these tutorials here for free! It helps out people like me so much 💖💖
This tutorial is very well made, probably the best hair tutorial in RUclips. This has helped me so much, thank you for making it. I can’t wait for what new videos you make next!
I've been trying to model hair for a few days now, and this has been the best video to really get me the results I'm looking for. I really appreciate the upload!
Holy moly, this is exactly what i needed, theresvwery little tutorial on how to do polygonal hair (as opposed to particle hair or plains with textures) even though i think it has a lot of applications and is the better for a stylized look. I was working with curves but id always get bland looking stuff, and if i wanted complex hair it would take forever. Ii didnt quite know how to get results that i wanted and i ditched it for manual modeling. I might try again with this!
This is the simplest technique for making appealing stylized/cartoony hair. I’ll be testing this and adding some physics to it, I’ll try to show what I find with this method. Thank you so much!
Dude, that's fantastic!! What an awesome tutorial. Sure, you do things pretty fast and it's kinda hard to follow, but i don't think that was the main purpose of this video. I loved it and can't wait for more videos like that.
Massive respect to anyone who knows how to do anything in blender before 2.8
Still useful even 6 years later. Thank you for the tutorial... I was wasting time trying to sculpt hair, this is much easier and faster.
You are a legend for giving this video away for free. I hope you do more tutorials, thank you!
1:49 If you are using the latest version of blender and you are trying to find the "vector" button, Select the line, Right Click, Click "Set handle type", and click "vector". Hopefully this helped some of you guys.
It did help, thank you!
THAANKS SO MUCH!!!!
Thank you so much
How is it just tiny bits of information are so impactful? This is a game changer!
LMAO - This is exactly where I got stuck!
You have no idea how hard it is to find a comprehensive hair tutorial. THANK YOU
A tutorial on animating the hair sounds great
i second it your idea
@@totyshy this vid i free but animating is what he gotta charg us haha jk hope he makes it
yesss. but with wind or physic move..
Mebansharai Marbaniang oh yes!!!
you can hook the points to an empty and animate that, or use de Animall addon to animate the individual points
This tutorial is one of the internet gems. Should be canonized.
13:45 make sure to add Mix RGB, not mix shader, or your hair will turn bright magenta XD he does it super fast so it's hard to tell which ones he uses so be careful to pay attention.

カーブだけでパーティクルヘアーみたいな細かさの髪の毛が作れるのか。大変参考になった。
Thank you for making this tutorial.(I'm sorry if my words are strange.)
Holy crap. Why are the oldest Blender videos always the best. Thank you so much!
Not only this is one of the most helpful videos for any character artist, but it's also narrated by one of my favorite actors - Zach Woods.
What I love about this method is that there’s literally no way to screw it up. No matter what you do, it’ll always end up looking good. And if it doesn’t look good, you just have to make some small adjustments and it’ll look great.
"...there’s literally no way to screw it up..." LOL Very funny, but right on point!

how do i clean up mesh? make hair strands less dense and merge overlapping hair? i cant figure that out, otherwise it could have been a great method

The bit with the transparency at the tips was a great idea that's made my curve-hair look a lot nicer!
This is the best stylized hair tutorial that exists as of right now.
this guide is a godsend. ive been putting off the hair on this model for about 6 months because nothing id found before suited the stylization i was going for. i am grateful

Your tip for the extra hair strands at 9:55 blew my mind. The hair looks so much better with just those small extra curves added.
This is an excellent tutorial. I've seen quite a few of these types of tutorials, but yours is the first that helped me complete a fully realized hair model.
thats really true!!!
I absolutely agree, i feel like this has given me a great starting point.
Great use of the Anisotropic shader: take something, bend it to your needs! If you're going to start making tutorials, I think you have all it takes to make a good teacher!
People like you are REALLY generous, sharing so many pro tips and entire pipelines of their work.
This is *amazing*! I've been use curve modeling for hair for a while but it had never occurred to me to incorporate stray hairs into the bevel. The result is gorgeous.
The best geometric hair tutorial I have ever seen
BLESS YOU AND YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE!!!! YOU ARE A LEGEND FOR THIS!!! YOU HAVE CHANGED MY WHOLE BLENDER LIFE!!!!

I was having trouble figuring out how to color the hair once I modelled it like this, because a plain line can't be unwrapped, so 11:10 was a big help. Thanks!

Wow, that was your First tutorial! Great job!!!
Really ingenious. I've seen curves used this way but the shading technique here is what puts this over the top.
This tutorial is the best hairtutorial I've seen, hands down. Life saver!

You just solved my problems with hairs in blender, you are my god now!

Thank you so much! I had no idea you could have separate shapes in the beizer circle, and the shader setup is really helpful
Hey dude, You should definitely continue this channel. You have a very easy way to explain things and you got a good voice too. Keep up the good work
This was AWESOME!!!, Thanks for sharing
Pure magic yet simply explained!
This is amazing, your video boosted my learning curve 10 times faster in 10 minutes then other tutorials in days. thank you

Nice! There seems to be a tremendous dearth of (quality) hair tutorials. This one helps a lot!
This was so amazing and easy to follow! I was making my own hair as I watched thru this. Thank you for sharing and God bless you!
AMAZING methods!!! WOW!!!
Thank you SO much for this video, this is exactly the kind of semi-stylized hair I've been trying to make.
best hair tutorial ive seen so far, great work
Mate, this is brilliant. I am sorry to see that you have not done a lot of videos and none in quite some time. The modeling and texturing are genius.
Dude, that's fantastic!! What an awesome tutorial. Sure, you do things pretty fast and it's kinda hard to follow, but i don't think that was the main purpose of this video. I loved it and can't wait for more videos like that.
Probably one of the best blender hair tuts I've ever seen.. that was awesome man!! Thank you kindly

I look it in 2021 and this video is still actual. Thank you!
Are you a God? I think so. It's amazing, great work! I'm really inspired to move into character design because of this video.
Your way of explaining is very good, much better than lots of other I saw. Unfortunately this is for 2.7
Fantastic tutorial. Well explained, well narrated, concise, in depth... very helpful.
Why can I only leave one thumbs-up?
