@@PalleRasmussen Wolverines are no match for any species of bear, but they can definitely scare them off. Idk if thats what you meant but I would love to see a video of a wolverine actually killing a bear.
That's a domestic ferret set up for this video. A true wild polecat is darker, has a darker face and a black nose with minimal white marking. They have blockier more solid bodies and are much more nimble. This ferret is "waddling" as it's curious and doesn't really know where he's at (I hike with my ferrets so I know this walk very well.) It also didn't even leave a dent in that snake. The ferret's nose is a dead giveaway. Polecats only have black noses whereas pink noses are the most common nose coloration in domestic ferrets.
I know someone who worked at an exotic vets office who told me that the "ferrets are rodents" misconception resulted in allot of emergency visits from snake owners who practiced live feeding LOLZ.
Mine is so clumsy im suprised even the ones in the wild could survive in in the wild there clumsy goofy playful funny furry slinklys.and the pole cat isnt that much diffrent just wild.but yet they can crawl.into almost any tiny rabbit holes i seen mine catch a mice once but plsyed w it instead of eating wich i wanted him to do.but there not very graceful like a cat.but thats why i love them and own them.there hilarious lil theives
The scene is set up and they have used a ferret to play the polecat. The European polecat should be darker but it's more the way it moves that gives it away. Polecat would be quicker and more efficient at making the kill.
so... polecat is wild ferret? and vice versa - ferret is domestic polecat?.. what the point in having two different words for the same enimal? I mean there is obvious difference between pig and boar for example, but ferret/polecat...its like giving special word for domestic fox.
+OgrabliatorKorovanov No, they're the same, just two different names. Look at the red panda, it goes by a myriad of names such as fire fox, red panda, lesser panda and so on. It's a region thing. I think Polecat is the general term (or the species name) where Ferret is more precise and refers to a direct sub species in the genus Mustela. Kind of like Coyote, Wolf and Dog.
No, a ferret is not the same as a polecat. It is a domesticated animal (has been for the past 2500 years) and has genetic differences to the polecat (narrower head, weaker jaw structure). Ferrets are naturally social animals, seeking out both human and ferret interaction to remain content. They also lack any inherited survival instinct meaning they struggle to hunt anything successfully, don't naturally know how to eat whole prey they have no homing instinct in general, they are rarely territorial, and they have no real natural fear of predators either. They rely on humans since they, like dogs, are a man made species. The polecat has a natural fear of people and are solitary except during breeding and kit season. They are professional hunters with strong survival instinct and do not tame well. Plus the polecat has set markings with a dark mask that touches the solid black nose and solid black legs and tail. The ferret comes in a variety of coat colours and markings as usual with a domestic species. Even polecat coloured ferrets can be told apart from real polecats as most ferrets have a separate mask that does not fully bridge with the nose and single white hairs can be seen amongst the black legs and tail. These people used a trained ferret in the video which isn't even polecat coloured...
Ferret Fangirl! True-ish, technically the same species, different subspecies, so it's a similar situation of dog vs grey wolf. With domestication comes a change in the body, but it is still technically a polecat, just like a dog is still technically a wolf. It's one of those square-rectangle relationships. Where a ferret is technically a polecat, but not all polecats are ferrets.
I doubt it. Cats are still called cats just like their wild ancestors. But who knows how languages will evolve in the future. I think old languages actually had the same word for polecat and ferret, like "iktis" in Ancient Greek. Maybe if we go far enough back in time there was even a language with the same word for dog and wolf.
yea both polecats and ferrets are actually very good swimmers idk why they implied that theyre bad at it, they can even make do swimming in the ocean for a while
but it is quite big, its possible its a cross between the two. there have been times where domestic ferrets were released back into the wild along with polecats to control populations of small animals
polecats are not ferrets they are both weasels but a polecat is not a ferret. Plus in this video the "polecat" looks way to small more like an escaped pet ferret
a snall percentage of snakes are in fact poisonous due to their diets of eating poisonous amphibians (usually salamanders), so he should have said it wasnt poisonous OR venomous to be fully correct
+Cameron Johnston No they're not lmao. Ferrets came from polecats just like humans came from primates, they are 2 different species with a lot of similarities in terms of genetics and behaviour. One species has wild instincts and more abilities to survive in the wild, one has virtually zilch because they have diminished from breeding and adapting to modern environments where they don't need to hunt for food and look out for predators. The only wild ferrets you can get are black footed ferrets which have a strong polecat ancestry and also hybrids of the polecat and domestic ferret. The domestic ferret, like humans, would need to develop skills and a drive in order to meet basic needs in the wild whilst primates and polecats are already born with it.
+Jonathan Wharton Not any more. Cats, Dogs and Ferrets were once considered different species (Felis catus, Canis familiaris and Mustela furo) from their ancestral species (European wildcats, wolves and polecats respectively), but as of 2003 they were all redesignated as the same species (Felis sylvestris, Canis lupus and Mustela putorius) by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. (edit to add: technically domestic cats are derived from African wildcats (Felis lybica) rather than European wildcats, but those were merged into Felis sylvestris as well.)
+Cameron Johnston Ferrets are very closely related to polecats, however there are some differences in the bodies here and there. Ferret's are a subspecies to the polecat. Even ferrets can be called 'domesticated polecats' lol XD

"Courageous mustelid" Name one mustelid that wont go up against an animal twice their size.
The wolverine will kill a grizzly or polar bear over a kill.
