With 4 weeks until the USA Olympic Track and Field Trials, Sara Hall executed one of her best ever threshold runs in Gunnison, Colorado (7700ft / 2350m elevation).
Coach and Husband Ryan Hall (fastest American Marathoner in history) commentates the workout from the bike and shares some tips along the way.

It’s pretty funny how they’re biking in front of her and having a casual conversation, while she is just totally zoned in on the workout
I thought the same thing!
Ryan can talk and talk and talk :-D Good stuff!
she has her music on
@@whamcee no way
its because he thinks that pace is slow
Hearing the casual conversation while also seeing her workout made this extremely entertaining.
Wow. Very neat to hear Ryan narrate the training and quite impressive to see Sara just nailing the pace.
Check out his "Run Free Podcast" podcast. Some good stuff there.
@@tomekb4gin5ki Thanks. Ran by her husband Ryan, I think?
It's amazing how she can run that pace for 8 miles.
Literally, it's not much slower than I cycle.
I slowed the video down to .25 to feel better about my own pace
Amazing footspeed and form
Just training, dont forget, its not how fast u run, but how easy u run fast
Well, that's why she's Sara Hall! :)
Thanks for posting. USA Women are on a whole new level in ‘21.
Simply outstanding. Wow! I am very impressed. I enjoy running a few miles a day at age 63. Ran track and cross country High school and Army. Love it.
Very impressed by this athlete...hope she finds success this summer.
Great content! It was great to hear Ryan mention you can’t internalize the results of workouts and worry about your fitness . I needed to hear that.
This was awesome, Ryan and Sara. Commentary and action in the same frame. Sara is so tough. Hope she goes all the way to the Olympics. Go, Sara!
i am so hopeing and preying she gets on that olympic team......all her times are looking really promising.....watching sara get 2nd in her last marathon was such an incredible race.......
This, by far, remains one of the most bad a** workouts and a great motivator for us age groupers! 👍😎
Thank you again for sharing how the PROs are doing it! Very inspirational!
I agree with Sara about the Novablast. It's amazing because of cushioning and also a very durable shoe. Easy to keep up pace too. It was my nr. 1 shoe in 2020.
I'm thinking of getting a pair. How many miles did you put on them?
Fully agree. I'm at 800kms in the Novablast and it still looks pretty good.
@@jono2154 awesome!
Brilliant again, Matt. Keep the quality up, mate. Your channel should blow up!
Boy oh boy that 10K Olympic trials race is going to be one full and stacked race!
what an inspiration Sara is! that face of pure determination is amazing and inspirational! Well done lady!!!
I can't wait to start running again once my little bean is welcomed into the world. Watching this reminds me why I love to push myself. All I could think in the intro was "Get It Girl!" Love it.
She said the Novablast is a game changer. Yup and hell yea! I’m so in love with those shoes that it’s insane. BTW, that looked fun and painful at the same time. Lol
A 2:20 marathon even for a man is no joke. Always loved Ryan hall but got to give it up for Sara. Best of luck to her.
I remember 20 years ago, all the feminist were saying that women will compete with men's time of 2:10 marathon.
@@k-level Why is it a beef if he just mention something that was mentioned. It is not like he is commenting on it.
@@marklegault6662 And they will, the female world record is 2.14. Men have been running marathons a lot longer than women. Women were banned from running marathons until 1967 and even then Kathrine Switzer had to run the marathon illegally and was almost pulled off the course by the male organiser. Her boyfriend stopped him from pulling her off. Give women a bit of time and they will be breaking 2.10 no problem, even though they dont have the testosterone naturally produced in their bodies that men have which gives men the natural advantage.
@John Cena Its a pity you dont understand Biology or else you wouldnt be writing stupid comments like that. Women dont have the testosterone naturally produced in their bodies that men have which gives men the natural advantage. Its like saying men could achieve 30 minutes for the marathon if they can have the same biology as a Cheetah.
She made that pace look so easy. That's about 16:35 5k pace for an 8 mile training run!
She ran a 17+ at high school state XC to win her division ! Check California state XC of 1998 !
@7700ft as well would be converted to 15:59 5K pace on the sea level for 8miles
@@19Kamau79 Definitely. Running at altitude is tough and that workout would've been even faster at sea level.
The pace was 5:20 how much more specific do you need to be. Who reads pace per 5k haha.
@@donalddarko3676 I ran several 5k cc races in HS around that time (some faster, some slower) so just thinking about it like that made her training run even more impressive to me.
Brilliant stuff - man goes for casual 8 mile high altitude cycle and makes obedient wife run behind the bike the whole way!! All fingers and toes crossed that you smash the trials Sara - will be awesome to see you lining up for the 10,000 in Tokyo!
The thing Ryan said at 3:01 was pretty awesome. I'm honestly going to try and use that mindset in my own (back of the pack amateur) training.
For sure man
It worked a lot when I was on track for a year. I'm trying to qualify for LA steeplechase. One 800 I surprised a guy even with no fomral training
Did a 6weeks altitude triathlon training in Gunnison awhile ago. Loved it! Came back to sea level and had this fantastic edge advantage.
This is the content we want and need! Thank you Sweat Elite for this great footage! Please Galen Rupp next!
Yes except the Galen Rupp part.
He's a has-been. Great runner, most assuredly, but he was more than a bit caught up in Alberto's "tests"
Combined with his Achelies Heel reconstructive surgery, Rupp just doesn't have any brighter days ahead.
His performance in Tokyo seems to back that up.
I think 2016 was Galen Rupp's last "good" year.
🤔
Super impressive! WCU’s cross country course runs along the Gunnison River and has some flat gravel roads if Sara wants to get off the asphalt.
This was an awesome video. Ryan needs to go into sports commentary. Is it me or does anyone else hear Sarah foot stike the ground heavier on the right side than the other. Sarah is on fire.
Yes, as if there was a small dropping of the right foot...
I have some of that with my left foot, due to an achilles problem.
I don’t think that her right foot strikes heavier. Have a look at the part from around 9 minutes when it sounds like her left foot is heavier. I actually think that it’s neither, and that the foot furthest from the microphone sounds heavier - for whatever reason.
@@robertlight2370 yes.
She's a total pro, and Ryan as well, so if there was an issue, it would be delt with.
@@robertlight2370 I think your right, just re-watched it seen the same thing. Must be a reverb or something.
I heard Sarah breathing 2:1 towards the end of the workout, at 12:35. That was a sign her effort level was going above lactate threshold effort. Don’t misunderstand me her workout was incredible.
She's like the Energizer bunny. Just doesn't stop.
I can run 5:20 pace. For a mile...
She killed that workout 🔥
Also she did this at 8,000+ feet of elevation. Absolutely insane!!!
that's fast
@@spencerwencer4237 7700
@@spencerwencer4237 a lot of people run up in Crested Butte cause that’s abt 9000 and it’s only 30 minutes from gunni. I grew up there so it’s funny knowing exactly where they are lol
I can maintain that pace for about 150 meters.
Forget Rocky movies - this is an amazing motivation! Real athlete doing some amazing work!👍
She’s like “You ready?” I’m like “Hes on a bike” 😂😂
She ran past me last year in Crested Butte with Ryan pacing on the bike! Super awesome!
Stellar workout. Beautiful form. Rooting for you next week and beyond.
Ryan: Great job at articulating the strategies and perspectives.
Holy shit, what an unbelievable fast pace.
great music discussion, valid points
Get it Sara! Big fan.. Love seeing the engine running
She should be representing in the Marathon..she's amazing and so gritty. I'm still miffed about the whole Olympic Trial Marathon situation. So much can change. I saw her in Chandler, AZ and she killed it! Best wishes for the 5k, 10k!
She's not running the marathon at the trials?
@@elclashh209 They already had marathon trials in 2019...The team is set.
Absolutely love the motivation here!
what a savage, insane pace... awesome job!
Great video mate. Quality content!
Dam that’s some serious pace for 12.8km … I’ve gotten into running 🏃♂️ last 12-18months more consistently, my biggest concern is dropping my weight down more. Was 111-112kg when I started currently at 99-101kg , hoping to hit 94kg by next 2months ish… got another marathon coming up by then…
I saw her run in high school in the northcoast section: great to see her success this year.
Keep that Christ centered focus and He will continue to bless you on and off the track.
Great video! Really rooting for Sara!
Amazing. Always love Ryan and Sarah. Great people. unbelievable
The only time I can run a 520 is 400 repeats with breaks. What a beast! Best of luck on your races!
Ryan is legend
Awesome video. Super informative and I learned a lot. Looking forward to more content
Great video. I am big fan of their family.
Excellent advice from Ryan Hall! I’ve been struggling with my threshold lately and I do think it’s because I’ve been overly focused on splits/pace. More effort focus is needed and approaching the result scientifically instead of emotionally is key.
great hubby & wifey team-work... god-bless this guy... you know this cat probably helped Sara not settling for a retirement date... hoping to see her at the Olympic Games Paris 2024... Placing my bets on this epic running-machine... god-bless the both of em... Go-America
I tried different shoes, New Balance destroyed my knee and then came across ASICS. Since then I always go with ASICS and now already had a lot of miles in Glideride.
Go Sara! You're amazing. Beautiful family.
Novablast it is as my next trainer :-D
Great content, Sweat Elite!
Great form! Time to break out the Vaporflys 😁 All the best with the trials.

Novablast 2 + Metaspeed Sky = perfect combination
got back into running and got a pair of the metas, wow i wish i had those back in hs lol
Your such an inspiration sara....keep up your strong work......you and ryan are my heros 🙂
what a machine! super talented and hard working.
Awesome video! Thanks.
Congrats Sara
Amazing running pace and effort and a clear demonstration of how efficient a bike can be :-)
Congratulations on breaking the HM American record
She's almost sprinting. Unreal fitness.
She isn’t near sprinting.
@@CorbsVids it's sprinting for 99% of the population
@@kylestephens9593 lol true that
In relativity to most of the U.S. population, yes, this is a sprint. Depending on the definition, one can maintain a sprint effort for no more than 7-8 minutes.
Ryan Halls ASICS bike is funny!
It’s the hyperspeed series
Only one half of the fork
Muy buen canal 👍 como entrena el atleta siempre los vemos en las competencias pero no en los estrenos y aquí se puede ver como se preparan
Absolutely flying, this athlete. Total respect.
Watching this while I dip my churros into hot chocolate......
Bruh: a woman, running 8 5:20s in a row at 7700 ft above sea level. I’m a man and have been training for 4 years and can’t do that for 1 mile at sea level probably. So fkn elite
This guy has the life... ha ha... getting to coach Sara & have a leisurely bike-ride all at the same time... ha ha
great visual of the run
"Feels really comfortable!"
**continues to suffer, comfortably
So she listened to Electronic Music ? That’s why she ran so fast 👍🏻
I LOVE Gunnison. Great run!
Thanks!
Amazing endurance, chapeau, Sarah!
Great coaching.
Continue firme. Sucesso. Abraços.
How wonderful, the magic of our sport called street running. I don't speak Sara's language, but in the language of racing the emotion is the same. Look at the pace 3:20 Showww. Very fan, how nice the support of his family. Congratulations! Keep it up. Success. Hugs.
Glad to see someone really using these fitness watches.
Her rhythm is so consistent
great points from Ryan about training at a high level with the help of music 7:41
SHE'S AMAZING!
Great vid
Amazing.
Crazy the sound of her feet hitting the pavement. It sounds like there's a slight slide as the ball of her foot hits the ground. When I run that foot strike sound kinda weirds me out but it must be the way it should be.
yeah she is not terribly fluid to be honest. slaps along with pure effort
Awesome effort. Keeping the race passion...nice lol Desert time.
Amazing running

You make very interesting and good videos. This music stuff is weird. In 1988 when we went to Florida, we bought 3 G&E headsets that had radio. I tried to wear that device once when I went for a run but it wasn't like in ads where you run happy on beach. I just didn't get it why someone wants to run in a disco. Noise like music is just a disturbing factor in running. Being in silence is good because then one can concentrate on running or thinking or whatever one wants to do.
@@k-level what is that good stuff? I don't listen to music even outside running but I decided to start to train at the same pace that Sara does, i.e. 5:20 miles.
I used to do my best training listening to Tony Braxton, more 7:20 pace than 5:20, but still.
if she's doing 3:19/km (5:19/mi) pace for this threshold, I wonder what her goal pace in the 10,000 would be...
Even in cooler temperatures I doubt she could’ve gone under 30:30. If you’re asking how fast she could’ve run in a steady paced race and perfect weather, her 2:20 marathon is the performance equivalent of about 30 flat for 10,000 meters. I’ll add 30 seconds since the track races are not her forte compared to the marathon.
whoever put the metric system in these videos THANK YOU from Australia!
Tremendo a 3:20/km sin problemas con 40 años no se como no se clasificó en Atlanta
Woah haven’t follwed ryan since he retired. My guy is yoked!
Hey! That’s my hometown 😁😁😁
How easy he holds the perfect pace for her while talking all the time.
I would have been annoyed to death by the 2 gentlemen talking during my training but I guess her not being phased is what makes her a real athlete.
Could you please add the running shoes those champs are using in the video description?
Sigma Pi + Western State College= Gunny! Ahhhhh great college memories!
Oh man - I live and train at 8500 feet and even with being acclimated threshold runs are TOUGH up here.
That's what a professional looks like. Sara is on fire.
Seems to be right on track. Does she have the Trials standard and Olympic standard?
What a power couple!
