    I used to wonder why dating apps don't recommend date ideas. I.e. "You like bowling, they like bowling. Why not go bowling together?" And then I realized they make all their money off keeping you swiping on the app. Putting you in high pressure situations and making you feel like you failed is their retention tactic.

      Because dating apps are interested in making money.

      @GrantLeeEdwards 3 месяца назад

      @@mars7304 No, you’re the one who doesn’t get it.
      Losing paying customers to successful matches is a fundamental flaw/downside in the dating app biz model. To suggest that BMBL or MTCH can simply circumvent this problem is nonsense. It’s precisely why these companies have been struggling. Look at the stock prices of those two names before you reply with another ignorant comment.
      Is it GOOD for their bottom line to lose customers? No. Does that mean that the incentives magically align so that they are motivated to prevent successful matches? No. If you understood what you’re talking about you’d know how competitive the landscape is. Hence you can’t tank matches if you expect to out-compete other apps.
      And if you think there’s some grand collusion at work, you’re even more delusional than the original commenter.

Breaking down the natural connections between people reduces things that normally occur in communities like sharing and making intimate connections. And what do I do with those fifty-three minutes?"

    AI hype is directly correlated to share price, where there is high investor confidence (and investment) following announcement of AI for publicly traded companies. It's an ad for investors, and it works.
    Yes, it's almost certainly an investment bubble (for reasons not mentioned). Yes "AI" (machine learning) is useful. Etc.
    AI is (very) sophisticated pattern matching (or functional curve fitting). It wouldn't be hard for AI to find compatibility. It wouldn't be "dating" just finding some list of values associated with likelihood of relationship compatibility, and report these usefully (eg. 8 out of 10 conversation score, 4 out of 10 for liking dogs, 7 out of 10 enjoy similar foods). I suppose it could underpin a simulation as well, but this seems overly complex.

    How do we know this is a hype bubble. Cheifly, because we've been using "AI" for years, and people hardly noticed until LLMs got big. The AI we've been using is usually called machine learning, and has been steadily improving for years. It's a fairly useful tool in limited use cases

    From a programming perspective, this concept is indistinguishable from a matchmaking algorithm. The AI's wouldn't date each other like in the Black Mirror episode. That's not a thing. They would just exchange data. The algorithm itself is just theoretically more powerful.

    Yeah the colloquial use of the term “A.I.” and combining them with other tangential terms is destroying its ability to meet our expectations when it’s finally deployed at the consumer level. Matt Binder is right.

    In a world where social relationships are broken because tech was used to amplify the differences between people, tech bros (and sisters) apparently think we need more of the very same thing that broke everything in the first place.

    Couldn’t this ai dating tech potentially give room for predators to further prey on people? This feels like such a bad idea on so many levels

  • @chickyshack1978
    @chickyshack1978 3 месяца назад +3

    What's to stop predators from figuring out how to get in contact with their perfect victims? They can set up 100s of profiles and trial and error their way into women who have a history of dating abusive or manipulative men, or those seeking only single parents with vulnerable children.
    The "fix the bad boy" character just got a huge power up. It removes the ability to hone your spideysense with real world application.
    Many predators especially those in religious communities play nice literally only until the wedding ends.
    I am sure the dating apps will try to excuse these incidents with a disclaimer or tech glitch comment.
    I used to work for chat lines/ tango and let me tell you, it's a horrifying prospect to let ai run the show.
    Also for the men, you think you're getting fake hits now ...just wait til you don't get a chance for a date until you sent xx msg at $ xx per msg

    I think there’s some confusion on what they are trying to do. First some priors
    1) chat bots CAN simulate conversations with each other
    2) the biggest problem with dating apps is choice overload
    3) there goal with using chat bot trained on you is to simulate conversations with other people and therefore select a subset of people you’d match with that based on the chat simulations, you’re more likely to have a better conversation with
    Now for the actual problems
    1) depending on how this is implemented (before or after the swipe process), this won’t actually fix choice overload. So yea it’s gimmicky
    2) the amount of training a person would have to do for a chat bot to learn their mannerisms, conversation styles, etc is unreasonable to expect from your average person with little incentive to buy into the idea. Basically, it’ll increase the barrier to entry for anyone actually engaged and more likely to screw up and match you with people you actually wouldn’t have a good conversation with. Most people will delete the app in frustration before the chat bot learns enough from them to be somewhat predictive.
