Wright Thought That Weinstein's Theory Was Completely Crazy, Despite Agreeing With Some Of Bret's Claims In The Past. Weinstein And His Wife Heather Heying Responded To Wright, And Said That This Was Not A Theory But A Hypothesis.

How can this man have a PHD and not know that deductive reasoning is not how we do science?
He may know it’s not sound reasoning. He’s interested in fame, power, money, views…
It's literally how we do science. We had to solve the induction problem. See Karl Popper. Induction outside mathematics is fallacy. Not that I am defending Brett Weinstein here. Just don't confuse inductive reasoning with anything but fallacy unless you are using induction to prove some mathematical proposition.
@@noosphericaltarzan You can start with inductive reasoning.
@@soulknife20 You'd be starting with a fallacy so you'd need to stop doing that and work from a model. You should check out Karl Popper's solution to the induction problem. Induction in most of its forms is fallacious. For instance, the black swan fallacy is currently a famous version of how induction goes wrong.
@@noosphericaltarzan the problem of induction is that we cant ground it in any epistemic foundation.
That doesnt mean its a fallacy since.
1. Induction works
2. It contains no logical contradiction.
Now if youre talking about the black swan fallacy, yeah that can be a fallacy but thats induction applied without testing which isnt science.
For instance a scientist would make an observation, that swan is black, and from that generate a hypothesis.
All swans are black and then test it. If we tag all swans known to exist they will all be black.
The conclusion would then be limited to the tagging area which would mean inductively you could say "if i see a swan its probably going to be black" and be correct.
Logically and outside of science a person will observe swans being black and say "all swans are black" which is fallacious.

My theory is that Bret saw Peterson’s rise to fame in 2016 and just copied his grift.
Precisely. Just as Peterson created fake outrage about lying about Bill C-16, Weinstein created fake outrage lying about his uncovering of telomere issues in experimental mice and lying about racial issues at Evergreen college. They both(more so Weinstein) used Joe Rogan to launch their careers.
I remember he "moderated" some of the first debates between Peterson and Sam Harris. And when Harris kept saying "Uh, okay, I'm not going to concede that reality is determined by whatever gives you the most Darwinianly selective advantage", instead of Weinstein just saying "okay, so that's the result of the debate, they don't agree", he kept insisting that Harris agree with Peterson, because he thought it so necessary that Harris and Peterson join together in some unholy union of atheist skeptic and postmodern tradCath.

I can't even march in time! Conscripting me would be like a Woody Allen sketch from the pre-Mia era when he was funny). If it's only 10% or less they might be deliberately wheedling out non-compliant personality types. Hazing rituals, which are traditional in military outfits even though the modern military officially disapproves of them, must lead to some dropping out, but the point of the ritual is that those that remain are less likely to leave because they have undergone an ordeal that would have been for nothing if they left after having gone through it, so they become more committed to their membership of the group responsible for their hazing. Well, that's the theory at any rate. So given hazing must lead to some drop outs, is it a similar figure?

It's an unlawful order- they had to alter the definition of vaccine- and what they claim isn't backed by anything- approved by unelected offices and panels. That's like renaming " genocide " to " administrative culling"- then providing an "explanation" that sounds official with " science" . Exactly Like Hitler. Kind of bummed that everyone on the show was unfamiliar with Robert Wright’s work. A “Skeptic/science blogger” who operates in a space that is “definitely where Weinstein came out of” is a pretty irresponsible characterization. I’d recommended listeners of this show to subscribe to his Non-Zero newsletter where he has previously been quite critical of the Weinstein’s as well as offer quite good coverage of the Russia/Ukraine war and the American response to it, among many other things. He somewhat recently interviewed Ben Burgis (friend of this show) on his Hitchens book, whom Wright previously clashed with on the Iraq War. Hold you to a high standard: do better.
Calling him "quite critical" of the Weinsteins is underselling it. Half of Wright's career the past decade has been opposition to the New Atheists and IDWers, from a leftwing, anti-interventionist perspective.
Just made the same comment! I was also very surprised and disappointed.

Robert Wright is definitely NOT intellectual dark web adjacent. He somehow managed to be interested in a lot of the same stuff but without partaking of any of the same values or attitudes.
He's been on the 'maybe Brett Weinstein is a complete charlatan' beat for a while, but he bends over backwards to be charitable, and so was withholding any final public judgement.
He's also always been a non-interventionist and constantly emphasizes the importance of 'cognitive empathy', and seeing foreign policy from the other country's perspective.
The more I think about it, Robert Wright is kind of what you get if someone actually proceeded with the kind of intellectual principles the Sam Harris types only pretend to espouse.
I dunno… RW is just as opinionated & defensive as any of these guys.
Oh, no, people might leave the military because they don't want to follow orders?
Yeah, it's more likely the maintaining of mandates in institutions even after they have been found to be nonsensical is as a test of obedience. The military has always preferred cookie cutter conformists; a government doesn''t want mavericks or independent thinkers at the bottom end of a chain of command. That's a more likely explanation.
Bret made a plausible hypothesis. And it's hard not to agree with him. All the data SCREAMS that the mandates were obscene for any part of the population, let alone the military. Why would such a policy remain in place if its reducing military readiness? Those making these decisions are either doing so out of ignorance to the data, are too stupid to understand the data, or... it's intentional. You can argue it's not intentional if you want, but then you're left with our military leaders being ignorant or stupid. Pick one.
Masks marginally reduce the spread of COVID and do not reduce effectiveness.
Tell me you don't actually know a fucking thing about the data without telling me you don't actually know a fucking thing about the data
You know what would REALLY reduce military readiness, genius? Massive waves of COVID infections among the military. Seriously, use your fucking head, dude
i would not agree with your basis but id always pick ignorant for military leaders. smth smth malice
It's a false dichotomy. There's a possibility that you are wrong. The risks of the vaccine were overblown by people like Weinstein who made their living spreading fear and misinformation.
It is clear that whatever the risks of the vaccine, the risks of the real infection in the unvaccinated are much higher. And exposure to the virus is unavoidable for the military. The readiness of an unvaccinated military was more threatened than that of an unvaccinated military.
The vaccines are not risk-free, but full infection was/is riskier. Many people seem to miss this simple point. They act like the vaccines are super-dangerous and COVID is completely harmless, which is nonsense.
Most people I know were vaccinated. They are all fine. A few I knew who refused the vaccine are dead. A large portion of people I know got COVID eventually. Those who didn't get vaccinated got much sicker with COVID and had longer-lasting problems. I so far haven't gotten it as far as I know. I have had four doses of vaccine. I am grateful for it. It isn't ideal to take vaccines. I would rather it wasn't warranted. But it was better than the alternative, a lesser evil.

Counting on Netanyahu’s judgement to decide on the safety of the vaccine is some seriously shoddy reasoning.
assuming that Netanyahu was the chief scientist in charge of deciding the safety of the vaccine is even shoddier reasoning.
What’s up with the cartoon character in the lower right? Like grown up Sluggo…
Now that I mention it, what’s up with broke-ass robin wright in the white void? And what’s up with the freak show with the flag? He looks like a cool guy.
Is that Bubbles from The Trailer Park Boys in the lower right hand corner??? Why doesn't he have his glasses on?
Did Bret really use Bill Murray's line from Ghostbusters? "Back off man. I'm a scientist."
"They're doing this so that nobody will find out. I found out. I'm a random shmuck."
😄
Why all the uproarious laughter when he said he’s a scientist? He is a former prof. of evolutionary biology and recently published a book on the subject. He doesn’t currently practice, but still I’d say “I’m a scientist” isn’t a false statement; certainly nothing at which to laugh.
In any event, Weinstein is generally right and more importantly thinks like the excellent scientist he is and they’re wrong about him.
Step 1: Steal Underpants, Step 2: ???, Step 3: Profit
Step 2: change made in China tag to made in America
I see why you have thousands of likes and Bret has tens of thousands. It almost gives me hope.
I'm very critical of Bret but this video has made me lost a few iq points. This was a truly pathetic attempt to criticize someone
Hence the petty reason for this 2 minutes fo hate
I'm sorry but I don't know how anybody could sit there and expect us to take them seriously wearing a syrup like that. I couldn't even concentrate on what he was saying, I was too distracted by the wig.🤣🤣🤣
