“He’s a Fake”: Robert Kuttner on How J.D. Vance Disguises His Anti-Worker Views as Economic Populism

We speak with journalist Robert Kuttner about Donald Trump’s selection of Ohio Senator J.D. Vance to be his running mate in the 2024 election. Vance rose to fame in 2016 after writing the memoir Hillbilly Elegy about his upbringing in Appalachia. He was elected to the Senate in 2022 with the backing of right-wing billionaire Peter Thiel, who spent $10 million on his candidacy. While he was a vocal critic of Trump’s politics, once comparing him to Hitler, Vance has since embraced the MAGA movement and is now one of the most vocal defenders of the former president. Vance’s elevation is “very dangerous” because it lets Republicans pretend to care about working-class voters, says Kuttner, co-founder and co-editor of The American Prospect. “Vance is much more effective at connecting Trump’s cultural and social and racist populism to what looks like pocketbook populism, except it’s a fake,” he says. “We are really screwed if we can’t find somebody who can beat this ticket - and the ticket is beatable. You just need a stronger candidate than Biden.”

What is really worrying is the number of people who completely flip their moral compass in pursuit of power and recognition. I include Nikki Haley in this. When one stands in front of anyone, including oneself, and one can spin one's own moral compass on a dime, what hope is there?

I’ve read Project 2025 and I don’t see what you’re freaking out about! 1)Reducing school lunches? We throw away the majority of those lunches. My sister who is an office manager at an elementary school has told me they throw away the majority of the food supplied all over California. 2)Reduce SNAP benefits? Too many people are on the dole in this country. We are paying for people that could be working and are sucking of the government teat! Only those who really need it should get it, like our mentally ill and disabled who can’t support themselves. 3)Outlawing pornography? That would be a good thing for this nation and it will probably reduce sexual crimes, too! 4)Stopping government funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting? Half a billion dollars are squandered on leftist opinion each year. Why should conservatives be forced to pay for the suppression of its own views. As Thomas Jefferson put it, “To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical.” It would be absolutely fantastic if they did this. Why should we pay for this? Pay for your own opinionated programming. Only public service announcements should be paid for
Just from these few proposals, our costs would be reduced. I don’t see anything wrong with any of that. Do you? Just what are you afraid of? You have much more to fear from Agenda 2030 and the GrEaT rEsEt. Check out the prison you’ll be in if those elites get reelected!
