To me, this song perfectly encapsulates the swede
It's a lonely, melancholic melody with a bass line that somehow offers promises of hope and brighter days.
But the piano itself seems hesitant to offer such dreams and just stays the course with its solitude

Jobbade i gruvor, men även i skogen. Morfar kunde fortfarande mila (att göra kol genom långsam förbränning).

I heard a wonderful story about Jan. When this song broke big in Sweden, he was quite fed out of playing it live. But did it because the crowd demanded it. The touring arrangements wore very simple and he couldn't (of course) bring his own piano.
So when he arrived at some "folkpark", somewhere in Sweden, he discovered that the piano was out of tune. The director of this "folkpark" refused to pay to get the piano in shape so Jan payed someone to fix it out of his own pocket. He did his thing and afterwards he payed the same guy to "restore" the piano into it's previous shape.
I can't guarantee that this story is true, but it seems possible.
I discovered this record in the subway in Sthlm. Some stranger had make a bargin at some second hand store and had put his hands on this record on a original vinyl. He was very pleased. I overhead him and searched for the song on Spotify. I realised that I head this hundreds of time before, not knowing who made it.
Now I also have the vinyl. Not original pressing thou. Still looking :)
I bow my head to you Jan! You wore truly great.

FYI - this song became such a hit, that Jan and his group had to play it every evening, sometimes twice. Jan finally got enough, so one night he announced: "tonight we are going to play for the last time "Visa från Utanmyra". So they played it - and he never returned to it with his group (the great Jan Allan with trumpet, and he told this story).

l have discovered Jan's music by formerly listening to his sons (Anders & Jens) music projects and Jazz på Svenska has been one of my favorite album since then. Swedish jazz can't get any better than that !

Love this! My roommate had this vinyl in Berkeley back in the 80's! more than 25 years later I was craving it and all I remembered was the title: Jazz Pa Svenska and found the CD! Now it's here, so great!

I´ve been listening to Scandinavian jazz lately (Bobo Stenson, Tord Gustavsen, Helge Lien, Espen Eriksen, Esbjörn Svensson), and I´ve tried to put my finger on the sound. It sounds like a mix between American jazz (of course), Swedish folk songs and some kind of latin rythm (bossa nova?). When I listen to Jan Johansson, it feels like a concentrated version of Scandinavian jazz, like the source. Could it be that Jan Johansson is the origin of this style of jazz you hear in Scandinavia to this day?

Jan Johansson started the Scandinavian quite sound of jazz. Listen also to Bugge Wesseltoft (Snowing on my piano) and Solveig Slettahjel.

I was searching through some old pictures in the 1890-1960 of my birth home and just now found out that Jan Johansson grew up in the house next door to where I grew up (though he grew up there 60 years before me, haha).

Jan Johansson satt in hos Arne D då hans orkester spelade för oss i realskolan i Söderköping i mitten av 1960-talet. Spelningen väckte mitt intresse för jazz. En tid efteråt omkom Jan i en trafikolycka.
