I feel like this is just one of those instances where the truck was in a very specific circumstance (combination of stress, possibly material choice or failure, and other factors) and something broke. If you watch enough RUclips videos you'll find plenty of instances of one truck surviving a specific trail/climb/condition and another one failing. I just came to this video from a long snow driving vlog where the guy in the TRX got stuck four times and the Raptor (not a 37) and a Rubicon made it through unscathed. On another day, on another trail with the same amount of snow or whatever, it would probably have been different. All of these trucks are incredibly capable across the board, but none of them are invincible. Drive what you like.
Perhaps your next TRX could be the 1012 HP Hennessey MAMMOTH.
Why it’s a overpriced body kit

I've been a Ford guy for years, but in 2017 I bought a new Ram and I still love it.
2017 F150 > 2017 Ram
I was always a Chevy guy and bought a 2015 Ram 1500 5 years ago and it has been nothing but excellent! Really changed my mind about FCA/Stellantis. Then I recently bought a 2008 SRT8 Chrysler 300 as a daily driver and it has also been a wonderful vehicle.

Suggest you send the tie rods out to metalurgist for analysis. They will tell you the metal content (compare to manufacture spec) and they will tell you what caused the failure.
Glad to see you sticking with what you love in the TRX, I know you did it for some new content but us OG subs would watch 100 more videos with the TRX if you put them up. On a side note maybe make the Raptor the next giveaway, people would love to win a Raptor that was truly tested off road by you…..
I bought a gen3 22 raptor with 37s. Between that and the TRX, honestly I liked the way the TRX looked on the outside a little better, but I loved the way the raptor felt on the inside better, and that’s where I’ll spend all my time.
Gotta say for those of us that run into the problem for TRX vs Raptor, we are lucky to have such “debates” lol. Y’all stay safe out there and keep riding 🤙
Buy a oem TRX and Raptor tie rod and put them in a press of some sort and do a stress test till they fail on a video. Make sure its a gen 3 tie rod though
Bronco tie rods are very tiny. They are the same specs, almost, as the older gen Rangers. A lot of guys will bring them with on the trails in case they snap the stock ones and at least they can get home. There are a few options for reinforcing them. Most people will never take them off road difficult enough to break most of them
Upgrading tie rods is a pretty typical mod for ifs when your lifting the suspension and/or adding power. I’ve done it to every duramax I’ve owned and have never had an ifs issue.
@@al1087 The classic version (2001-2007) were known for weak tie rods and the reason GM subsequently upgraded their size on the newer generations. end- Link sleeves or aftermarket are a necessity when taking this era truck off-road.
@@cobra12398 they didn't upgrade the tiesrods, the new 2020s literally have the same size of tierod as the early 2000s

@@cobra12398 I've got sleeves I'm gonna install someday.
Mike, I would not throw the old tie rods away if I were you. I would give them to the Ford dealer and let the dealer get them analyzed.
Lol they’ll probably just throw them away , it’s not that serious 😂
Conflict of interest. If that happens on the highway, people could get hurt.. I'd get the tie rods tested myself 1st.. Material grade, stress, fracture and tensile documentation.
@@TracyH007 It could very well be just a bad set. It happens with everything that's manufactured.
But if it's not, and more Raptor owners start coming forward about their broken tie rods, Ford's feet need to be held to the fire!
Good idea
No analysis needed really, tie rods were bent and snapped on the threads.
If I were to say do anything, it would be to take those + some OEM tie rods for a TRX and have them compared and test the quality and something like a bend test.
If i had to guess, what ever caused damage to the front bumper ended up slightly tweaking the tie rods. once they have a slight bend, the force of turning or any external forces on the wheels will cause the tie rods to bend more and snapping just as yours did.
Trx is a me too raptor. Someone buggered yours but there’s about 100x more guys beating on raptors successfully than trx’s to be fair.
You should take it back to that same trail again just to be sure lol
I’ll give your Raptor a good home!!!!!!
Just FYI. That plastic piece that is glued to the bumper is to cover the collision avoidance sensor in the bumper. The plastic has to be super precise, otherwise it causes the sensor to fail or not work at all. They cannot put a metal cover over it without disabling the sensor which would disable your collision avoidance, auto brake, and adaptive cruise control.
GET RID OF THE BLOODY NANNYS AND WE WONT HAVE THIS CRAP ANYMORE
My guess would be it was previously damaged earlier on the trail and then the torque from spinning broke it completely . Then once the right one went and you continued to rip on it .. other one let loose … just a hopeful guess from a gen 1 owner
i will say, the road noise is 100% from the tires. raptors come stock with k02’s and they ride really nice
Goose tune the raptor and if you wanna really move get big turbos or if your really crazy rmb sell a bored out 3.5 with 1200whp and top mount turbos it does shoot flames would love to see
Glad to see you keep with Ram TRX
I personally think you are making the correct decision. Keeping the TRX "or a TRX" and getting rid of the Raptor.
I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with ram, maybe just bad luck got a lemon but don’t plan on going back
For as long as the Raptor has been out, jumping, baja runs in Mexico, have never seen the tie rods break. Would of went with Rpg complete tie rods if your so worried about the stock ones. I for one have never worried about my 17 Raptor's tie rods. Some Broncos had issues, other's have wheeled there's with no issues at all.. Might be some bad heat treating on these rods as of late? The Raptor R beat the trx on road, they were neck and neck off road.. The trx does have 80/20 power all the time which takes a lot of guess work out. The trx has launch mode which works very well. The Raptor would have to be put in awd/ 4wd and certain rpm's when launching. Most drivers can not come close to getting that right.
And the R is on 37s
@ Street Speed 717 Glad you are staying with the TRX. You have been very fortunate to have the chance to put both the TRX and the Raptor to the test. I've had the opportunity to drive numerous Raptors and TRX's and have decided on the TRX. Keep the videos coming.
450 hp. Not 500. And also 37s. Rotational mass is a killer. Figured that was obvious when you wanted a shorter tire for the zr1 to go faster 🙂
Chevy is the heartbeat of America. Ford-Found On Road Dead. I pulled more fords out of trouble with my little Colorado than most other trucks!
Tie rods are much stronger when pulled vs being compressed between mounting points so with the steering rack in front and him going up that hill and the tires spinning that meant the tie rods were being compressed from the wheels to the center as the wheels pull forward and alls it takes is the wheels to get intermittent traction and it would flex the tie rod and bend it.
Dude the guy just didn’t believe you at all 😂 TRX for life 🇺🇸🇺🇸🤙🤙
The tie rods breaking was pretty simple reasoning you had 37 mud grappler tires climbing up a packed dirt hill on wet rocks and leaves while in the trx you just floored it all way up and their wasn’t no you going slow unlike your raptor where you stopped on the hill which was most likely parking on rocks that happened to be big enough they redirected the tires breaking tie rods
The TRX gapped the Raptor R 1/2 lengths from a dig. Rolling race was the exact opposite. IMO the Raptor R is gonna wind up being the faster truck w/a proper driver. Which is why you have to get one!!! We NEEED TO KNOW!!!
My F150 sport is leveled with 36 inche nittos and I never had that problem . I take my truck off roading in New Jersey all the time . Had to be a faulty part .
Mike saying “it was just a dirt hill i have it on camera” sound like when i get in trouble and im explaining to my mom that is wasn’t going 154 in a 35
I'll keep my TRX
If you look at the angle the tie rods are at on the ford VS the TRX you will see the TRX are almost level to the ground where the ford is at a 35 degree ish angle and that puts more force on all the steering components. just my 2 cents.
Those angles are NOT stock, that truck's been messed with !!
It was the first big rock on the passenger side that the truck wouldn't go over. Bobby said stop and then had you turn driver to go around it on driver side. That rock was big
The problem is the person before mike leveled the truck, creating bad ball joint angles in the tie rods. And with all the other trucks that went up the trial don’t have bad ball joint angles, mixed with mud grapplers, with extreme lugs pull at rocks/dirt, that’s the problem not ford.
For reference, look at the angles of the ram in video, compared to ford ones the stock suspension the other has almost a 3 inch level
100% agree Boss, those suspension angles from the front looked way too radical !!
I think you're making the right move, by sticking with TRX. I know a lot of people who have trouble with Fords breaking on the trails. We have a lot of off road country her in Utah. And on another note. I would really like to be your first Utah winner.
When you were talking about the Raptor, I was just shaking my head, everything you talked about is what I feel about Ford trucks. I test drive them they are good , but they dont fit me. I am in my 5th Chevy Truck!!!
‘Ford gotta be using that Chinese steel”
So funny yet nowadays so true.
Congrats Paul, i really hope i get that GT500, ill probably sleep in it for the first week lol
Steer clear. I own a 2018 Raptor and the engine has been rebuilt twice. the finance guy that helped me at Ford owned a GT350 for several months before the engine blew.
Visually that Raptor is a pretty good looking truck. Seems like to me there should be some aftermarket upgrades to make the suspension better. I would always recommend a Dodge over other trucks because I am a Dodge nut but not going to knock how good that truck looks. With some modifications it seems like it could be a pretty solid truck. Though I can see the sentiment in that it costs so much it should come already super solid.
Personally I’m more into the fords but I cant really pic a side in terms of performance because both the dodge trx and the raptor r really aren’t baja trucks to be fair as they are advertised. They are more just for show. I know a lot of people hate on the v6 raptors but they take a absolute beating like I’ve never believed. But from experience the only thing I can criticize on the dodges is the hemis are not great and the suspension is rather soft. But also the cummins trucks the engines are way to heavy for. Overall can knock dodges to much. More can overall point out the flaws and failures but they both have issues all trucks do.
I've always liked the raptor more than the TRX. I like being able to be fully RWD. And the raptor is 700lbs lighter. No denying the fact that the TRX is faster and sounds amazing.... still both great trucks!
Offroading is Offroading period! Your not a bad driver, your blessed to be in a position with your vehicles and you don't hold back if it breaks you have the money to get it fixed. TRX for the win!
Stay tuned for the next car Mike pretends he’s going to swap the TRX for.
WELL I TRIED. I DIDN'T KNOW IT WOULD BREAK IN 2 DAYS.
@@StreetSpeed717 Maybe a new daily truck can be the truck Bobby bought it's a bit old school. 💯🏁
from factory Trx is on 35's and raptor R is on 37s. on the same size tires I think the raptor still takes TRX from a dig even with the superior trx launch control... on "Throttle house" In a roll race the raptor walked the TRX
Lol🤦🏻♂️😂😂 have to come out with excuses
@@aarondiaz81 Walked it, are you dumb mate, that's no excuse !!
"I'm not gonna sit here & say Its a bad truck..." You've done nothing but for the last few videos lol
Too the point of being over-the-top offensive to Ford and Ford's generaly !!
Try the Chevy Silverado zr2 and modify the engine and suspension, and try to create a Zr2 that competes with the TRX
Mike sharing the love with the working class! Congrats on the Bronco!
Cringe comment
I’m honestly surprised Ford didn’t ask for those part back so they can be tensile tested. If they have a material quality issue you’d think they would want to figure that out before this happens to somebody going 80mph down the highway. That would turn out a lot worse than what happened here.
The weight could actually have played the crucial part. Mud grapplers are notoriously heavy for size. A few static pounds extra will make a would of difference when you're talking about rotational mass.
I'm not a truck guy but what good is a Super Off road truck that you have to worry about off roading? TRX does make Raptors run for cover 🏆
Really hope to see TRX for a very long period of time on the channel its a great truck!
Mike, It’s a great looking truck! Love the color and looking forward what you will do with it! It is shocking to see it break like that! Edit: The RAM did win JD Powers build quality that last two years.
Jd power awards are a joke. Ram also won “truck of the year” in 2019. Thing is, the award was issued in February of 2019… 2 months into the year
Also, Companies pay JD Powers for such!!! Conflict of interest much???😉😉
True, your both right.
Big heavy tires and wheel hop that’s what broke the tie rods ,
Ford has had 46 separate safety issues recalling 6.8 million vehicles so far this year alone. Enough to break all records for recalls by a vast margin. #1
Really hope the raptor turns into a giveaway!!! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
At least go for a redemption run to see if you can actually make it up there without breaking another set

The TRX won the dig.
The Raptor R won the roll Race.
The Trx and Raptor R off-road was decided it wasn't a fair race because of surface conditions of the dirt.
Man, i hope you take it to the dealer or somewhere that will actually put that thing on an alignment machine. I do appreciate your mechanic though, i love how he says exactly whats on his mind. Telling you wheres your snatch block, gear up! Shackles couple decent small nylon slings.
The tie rods might not have been adjusted properly from the factory, the threads have to be at a certain depth on the ends or else there is a danger of shearing
@CGG_GSS might just be an induvidual lemon
This is classic gm stuff. Maybe they used ac Delco tie rods?
I’ve had both the Raptor and TRX. The TRX is bad ass on road but imo the Raptor out performed the TRX by a good margin off road and plus they’re are way more after market options for the Raptor. I was struggling to find stuff for my TRX.

Think a new Chevy 1500 build would be awesome, since they don’t make a “cool” truck from factory. Coilovers, wheels, tires, supercharger. Everyone does Trx or raptor.

On my lifted Jeep I run only the cheap Napa line of tie rods. For some reason, they are way stronger then the best ones and way cheaper.
you should build something crazy like a 3000gt turbo or a dodge stealth tt
You should have saw how bad my Ram 5500 front end went out on asphalt. At least you were on a rocky dirt road.

Oh boy! This ought to be a good one 😂😂 I wouldn’t mind to build a Raptor or TRX here on my channel at some point!
Best ever real life TRX vs Raptor R review! Massive Mike. Epic
Raptor R only lost in a starting from a stop drag race. But a roll race the Raptor R beat the TRX. The tie rod breaking think was just bad luck.
BTW the source for this is that Throttle House video where they did multiple runs. 👍🏻
@@asdf51501 Yes and said the launch control is what won it for the TRX.
VIEWERS Can we get a truck channel to put out a safety type video about pulling a trailer? There was a tragic accident in Raleigh where a young girl was killed by a truck pulling a float that lost its brakes.
It was definitely some sudden traction that broke them. Maybe you shouldn't have been as on the throttle but that wasn't anything crazy.
Nope your just making an excuse😂,any other truck would’ve made it up there. I thought the raptor would be better than the trx since ford was analyzing them for years but sadly the HP is still lower and the build quality is surprisingly bad on these newer raptors. Ngl tho the paint on body looks amazing but that won’t help it when it getting towed back to the factory

Just kidding, but I prefer my solid axle F350 for that reason
Just wait for the R. Try it again. Let’s be real. You’d have never ended up loving the truck as much as the TRX just because of the motor.
Raptors are big where I come from I’ve fixed more raptor frames and front ends out of any make or model. They do not hold up to abuse.
I have been working on the automotive fasteners industry almost 25 years and the only way those threads sheared like that is due to material defects like they weren't heat treated the right way, I'll bet that part is not as hard as should be or too hard to the point that becomes brittle.
Happy your keeping the trx it’s really a overall good truck for everything and it hasn’t broke there still are raptor people out there and have your raptor the next giveaway vehicle
I think FCA was prepared since they broke a tonne of parts testing the trackhawk so they knew exactly where the stress points were and I def think a lot of ppl underestimated the TRX build quality but your video jumping the TRX at 60mph and Ben Hardy's transmission line going loose causing him to get a new trans didn't help 😂 that's all ppl mention that have hate towards the TRX
Because FCA does the required amount of research and development and software tests and real world driving tests to confidently put a vehicle on the road so they don't end up with twice as many recalls as they should. Which is exactly what happened to Ford
FCA had horrible build quality back in the day. Glad they’re at least learning from their mistakes.
