Heartbreaking. I left Lancaster Uni in 1995 and ended up as Frontierland's signwriter. It's a beautiful place. It has everything Brighton has, ten times over. Better beach, better views, fine architecture. It deserves so much more.

I left Morecambe 2 years ago for the north of Scotland. I found living in Morecambe's West End an unhappy experience. I'm from London and had to cope with prejudice and aggression fairly regularly. It was really hard to make friends. What really wore me down was the littering, dog fouling and noise. As soon as it got dark the shouting and screaming would start. It was unnerving. On a plus point, the prom and view is amazing and it's close to some stunning places.

I'm from London and trapped in the west end of Morecambe too, not for much longer, it's an utter shithole, and if i thought i'd end my days here i'd be running into the kitchen right now and grabbing the carving knife and ending it all.. jeez. nightmare town. Nice views.. some nice folks too, but i can't stand this place, it's hell. exactly as you say.

I used to live there back in the mid-'80s and then I could see the end coming, looking back I enjoyed it and had some good mates, we would have the jocks to come down for Glasgow fortnight, and the TT racers on the Manx Viking but the views the wildlife and the good times are still with me, even the Christmas lights, such a shame.

I was a (American) grad student at Lanc U in 1982, 83. I loved living in Morecambe because it on the coast. I remember the boardwalk always being busy and cheerful. I also had an invitation to perform at the Midland Hotel with a C&W band! Long, long time ago.

  • @fasthracing

Have to say I really like Morecambe. We stay at the Midland quite a bit. Love Rita's Cafe & Coopers amusements. Funny the council saying they want something for the kids where Frontierland used to be, when it was the council that in effect closed it as they would not grant PP for a new ride in Frontierland And why has the "polo" tower now gone, I thought it was Grade 2 listed?

well, whatever people say about morcambe, and its repuation for being crap, i quite like it as it is. i like to go there when its crap weather, and theres barely anyone around, and stand on the edge of the pier watching the waves. i think its the most beautiful place in the world; the natural ocean, the veiw of the mountains on the other side, and the interesting pebbles and its of glass and shells. if you want to see disgusting, go to the so called fun blackpool. there, you have to wade in shit to paddle, and breathe in fumes sitting on the beach. and london's got way more bad areas, anyway.
Morcambe is maybe not the best place if you want fairs and touristy stuff, but i can see further, and i actually prefer it. also, its really near to heysham, and heysham is georgeous. thats a nice area too.

Yes it is depressing, I'm not from Lancashire originally, but have spent too much precious time here, now i'm moving out from the North.. the towns of the North of the UK (that i've seen) all seem dull, stagnant, rundown and hopeless.. apart from much of the countryside and some lovely people. The govt and business never spent any money up here really, they aren't interested in the North. Sad.

From Wikipedia: A resort is a place used for relaxation or recreation, attracting visitors for vacations and/or tourism. Resorts are places, towns or sometimes commercial establishment operated by a single company.
This does not describe Morecambe in the slightest.

I looked at moving to Morecambe in 2003...I even put an offer in on a house in Westminster Road. On my second visit was confronted with a thoroughly unpleasantly pissed junkie sitting in the doorstep and a burned out car in the street. Decided to stay in Lowestoft. But Morecambe has SO much going for it...even in the West End where most of the Victorian terraces could be splendid once more... Sadly it all boils down to money and a town such as Morecambe should have its own council and funding.

  • @TheCererean

Morecambe is... not actually all that unpleasant. It's certainly more interesting than Lancaster. Sure it has poverty, and it would help if the buildings were spruced up somewhat, but it's surprising nice for a depressed seaside town.
Though it would help a lot if people didn't think regeneration was something that could be achieved by throwing money at a place, and Morecambe needs to accept that it's not a resort town any more.

  • @84sblack

I have seen some improvement in the shape of the Midland Hotel and also last year there was a Vintage Festival which are a start and also the Theatre is taking shape but I think there could more not least the Frontierland wasteland which should be developed and built on with something for the people of Morecambe and Lancaster and hopefully not more houses as I could imagine that happening if the council ain't careful. So come on people if you can't stay in Blackpool go to Morecambe. The Best View in the UK (From the Midland Hotel and Promenade) of the Lake District, Carnforth Station and Heritage Centre just round the corner as is Blackpool and your not far off the National Parks of The Lake District and The Yorkshire Dales and Don't forget the great walk along the Lancaster Canal near by from both Carnforth or Lancaster City. Come and see for yourself. You maybe surprised.

Hi, I love Morecombe I used to live across the bay at Millom, Cumbria, Morecombe has a real sense of community not like Blackpool people must go to Morecombe and spend money, support the town in it's hard times it wont just recover it's self we need to help it, don't rely on the council we the public must do it, so go have a good time and give the town your support.
    Thanks.

Morecambe's problems started in 1974 when Lancaster City Council took over the "running" of Morecambe from Morecambe and Heysham Borough council. Since then, funding for the town has all but been diverted to Lancaster at the expense of Morecambe. Now the place is over-run with DHSS scroungers who think it is a lovely place to come and live while claiming their benefits to squander on cheap drugs and give nothing back to the area.
If they want "Job-seeker's Allowance" they should be made to tidy up the squalor they have created.
Better still - send them to live next to him four comments down!

My step mother and separately her parents provided full board weekly accommodation in Morecambe to visitors in the 1950s and 1960s. They converted their properties to self catering accommodation when they realised that the market was changing. After that many visitors ceased to visit Morecambe for week long visits and day coach trips became the norm. Thus hundreds of boarding houses and B&Bs ceased to be viable. The West End of Morecambe became 'bedsit' land and the decline inexorably began....

John Harris is wrong, in many ways.Morecambe (known as Bradford on Sea) traditionally took Yorkshire workers due to the Leeds-Bradford-Skipton train link. Blackpool was a Lancashire resort.Since about 1904 there's been a Leeds Children's Holiday Camp in nearby Silverdale taking some 250 underprivileged kids a year, nearly all with fond memories of the place.I personally love Morecambe - ideal for (50+) lads walking weekends at nearby Silverdale. It has great potential.***+see Alan Bennett's "Sunset Across The Bay" BBC 1975 featuring Morecambe***

Councillors are middle class, often social climbers, and are rich with property, connections and investments and money, they live in a bubble and do not see the world as others. Sad they get the limelight as if they know anything. Lancaster council is dreadfully and officiously run with all the usual bullsh*t that goes on with their cronies, You even have to phone or email the council to get them to leave you bin bags.. which is evidence of their budget.. what little cash the council gets to spend, they spend it in their backyards first, well, you would, wouldn't you ? - selfish self-interest, and Morecambe can basically go to hell, the people don't actually matter as the town of Morecambe actually descends into a slow hell, as the long suffering prisoners trapped here hardly notice..

You also said: "Morecambe IS NOT A SEASIDE RESORT ANYMORE! It was in the 50's, it isn't now." - It's Morecambe, it's on the North West coast of England, It has a beach, it has sea, therefore IT IS A SEASIDE RESORT - You utter prawn!

Morrisons own promenade wasteland. Eden Project Middle class waste of money. Lick of paint would help. Lots of small projects.

Is nobody rounding up volunteers to get into a bit of self-help? Nobody but the residents owe Morecambe a living.

You must be joking. Some of the pavements in Lancaster don't look like theyv'e been relaid since they first went down. Even Marks & Spencers closed their toilets because their cafe was shut. When we remarked that shoppers still need toilets we were told to go to Macdonalds. My sister said yes I think i'll spend my money there instead of here in future. No wonder M & S are in the state they are in.
