@Raving Loony well at least they are free. They are probably Morecambe's biggest and most talked about attraction, the jewel in the crown with the promenade. Tourism does create wages. With a half decent local authority Morecambe would be thriving but the Council could not organise a p*** up in a brewery

I AGREE JAMIE 100%,ESPECIALLY FROM ST PETER' CHURCH IN HEYSHAM VILLAGE!! I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO LIVE THERE FOR 7 YEARS AND LEFT IN 2007.WASN'T IN GOOD NICK THEN UNFORTUNATEY,AND MY DEAR FRIEND JANET WAS ATTACKED NEAR THE BATTERY BY 2 TEENAGE GIRLS SHORTLY AFTER I LEFT. SHE WAS X ARMY,AND WAS DISABLED DURING THE ATTACK,THEN BEGAN DRINKING WHEN SHE RETURNED HOME TO HER MUM IN DONCASTER. OBVIOUSLY SHE MISSED WALKING HER TWO DOGS ON THE BEACH,AND UNFORTUNATELY EVENTUALLY DIED DUE TO ALCOHOLISM. I GUESS THAT IS THE WAY THE WORLD IS THESE DAYS,NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE!

@@kristinejames9812 thanks so much for your lovely message and your honesty about your friend who died. I am so sorry to hear that. A friend of mine went through rehab in Lancaster and then he moved to morecambe with a sea view flat and he is a good artist and he was enjoying his new found sobriety and being clean from drugs. However after trying to make new friends he is now left wondering if he has made the right decision because he is surrounded by people who are involved in drugs and drinking and it's beginning to become a problem.. Such a shame

    • @kristinejames9812

Jamie...I hope your friend sticks with it,but I know what you mean though, because Morecambe doesn't deserve the reputation that it has! I lived in basement flat 14 years ago on Sefton Road,by the Battery and was surrounded by drug addicts and alcoholics. I eventually moved back near my mum in Oldham after having bricks put through my windows 3 times.I even had a CCTV camera put up,and a guy was arrested and then released. But I still have really good friends living there, who I still visit.I met these friends whilst walking my dog on the beach,so maybe that could be the answer for your friend,if he is allowed a pet? I know that some things have changed,ie: the new cafe near the battery, the Midland restored etc,it's a shame the council can't get rid of all the scum who live there!!! I still miss my walks down to heysham village, and Carnforth
I also did the cross bay walk once from hest bank to floukborough in the lake district (for charity). That was amazing and I would recommend anyone to try it.Thats another suggestion. Also the platform used to have weekly tea dances, where you can just go and watch and meet people if you wish.Although that may not be your friends cup of tea..Sorry for rambling on.I do plan on moving back there one day, though because I really do miss the place.

    • @jamiegrieve5875
      @jamiegrieve5875 3 года назад +1

@@kristinejames9812 thanks kristine and so nice of you to suggest that for my friend. He wants to start an art project and a group for people who are involved in recovery from drugs and alcohol but he said he had make sure he was strong enough first and he really loves the place. I have arranged to go to see him when we are off lock down hopefully and we are going to go over to Leighton moss at Silverdale and Arnside and then he said he would show me around the town and Heysham where you mentioned. It's got such a nice old character and some lovely victorian houses and the place could be a real focal point so I think it needs people like my friend to try and bring some new life into the town. Why do people want to spoil it.

Just back from 2 nights in Morecambe. I thought with COVID and people staying in UK for holidays that there would be some of the old magic. Unfortunately not. The sunset is still amazing, but having not been in 20 years, I was in shock at how different it was. I actually felt unsafe walking alone in the evening and struggled to find anywhere doing proper breakfasts. The rides were full of screaming drunk teens and Happy Mount Park had little to offer. Maybe i was just wanting to show my own kids the magic I experienced many years ago with my parents. Times have changed for us all I suppose.

Morecambe in it's hey day was a truly wonderful place to visit. All the piers (3), but sadly now gone along with both fair grounds. I spent many a hot day on the sea front, splashing about in the pools and literally 1000s of people laying the grass or walking up and down the promenade. Truly magical times...

In November 1977, the shoreward part of West End Pier collapsed in a storm, and Lancaster Ciuncil lost no time in demolishing the rest, before any talk of rebuilding it came about.
Lancester Council obtained a grant to refurbish Central Pier in the 1990s. They used the money to demolish it.
I can't remember the third one.

Happy Mount Park was also missing from your montage. I have very happy memories of the paddling pool, the trampolines and the little train that took you around the circumference. Summers were always hot and sunny and the ice cream cones never tasted so good. Happy times. Sad to hear about the knifings, homelessness and grime that the resort descended into. Keeping fingers crossed that the Eden Project will inject some self pride back into the community.

Only twenty years ago they had that big open swimming pool area and the Polo tower in Frontier Land was working as was the roller coaster. but if I remember rightly the Midland hotel was is a state then, now the hotel is done up & everything else is but a memory, such a Shame!, it is amazing how places change in such a short time. Never mind the time past since some of these old pics. When you walk though the west end of Morcambe now and see what once were grand buildings, that are now in a state of disrepair & delapidation, it's so disheartening. It not only Morcambe it's a symptom of all over the noth of the UK and it's awful to see. Places dying like this.

      It needs attractions
Folk arent going to visit just to admire the view .
I was born there , lived on West End Rd , almost at the junction to Acre moss lane , could see the Big Dipper from front bedroom. Late 60's through seventies.
Visited a few years ago , the front is barely recognisable.
Happy mount park used to be immaculate, it's a shadow of its former self, everything looked grubby to how I remember it
That beautiful railway station at the front is now a cafe , unbelievable.
My Dad worked at the town hall and always said when the council was taken over by Lancaster , Morecambe was neglected.
The problem for Morecambe is it isn't near any other big towns or isnt on a through route to or from anywhere.
We live near Southport which attracts visitors from all over the North west, same as Blackpool , whereas Morecambe is more of an outpost .

I remember a wooden pirate ship beside the promenade and saw it in the background at 2.54 in this great video. Also, there were sand trains - tractors made to look like steam engines pulling open trailers with bench seats for paying passengers. It was fun to ride on them through water when the tide was coming in. In the 1970s there was the Radio 1 Roadshow and the Milk Festival near the Midland Hotel. Poor old Morecambe went downhill in the next decades.

Heard an interesting account from an elderly gentleman at the foodbank yesterday. In the early 70s when Morecambe & Heysham Borough Council was amalgamated and became Lancaster City Council it had just bought a fleet of lorries. These apparently were bought by Freemason Fred Edmundson without any tendering process and he started his haulage business. In 1991 Edmundson purchased the Winter Gardens which was listed as a grade 2 * listed building in the 70s. He removed all the valuable Waring & Gillow joinery such as the hand carved cherubs without listed building consent and then sold it to Barnfield Construction.
