I don’t think it was in vain. She learned who she was and what she was capable of because of him. He helped her have a future she only ever dreamed of. He also knew that had he chosen to live, he would be holding her back. I don’t think the movie showed this as profoundly as the book. I recommend it, if you want more understanding of why this shouldn’t be disappointing.
Cordelia Gao Janet McTeer is an Oscar nominated actress and Charles Dance played just one of the best villains of this (past) decade, Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. They definitely aren't poor actors. Sure they had little screentime but they are very good classic british actors.
