My beloved Whippet was Floyd and as close to a universally loved dog as I have ever come across. There was no "downside" to sharing my life with him except he only lived 15 years. I truly believe they (Whippets) are the perfect dog if you remember to never never never walk him without the leash. A Whippet is a 35mph love bug.
Our Whippey is off the leash 90% of the time, at parks, woodland, beach, etc learnt him recall from a very young age and he has no issues coming back. Acme gundog whistle training is also a good way to be able to let them off. Given Whippets love of running its also essential they get time off the leash.

Whippets are THE BEST!!!! We have two seven year old whippets and they mean so much to everyone in the family. So many similarities Snoot has to ours. Snoot is adorable! Thanks for sharing 👍
This is just not accurate! I have owned whippets and greyhounds--they are not catlike at all..that is, they readily come when called, crave and return attention, are not stand offish. I have owned a Saluki as well--another sighthound--now they ARE cat like.
Teaching a dog tricks isn't to show off. It's actually pretty important that dogs know more than just sit and come. They should know down, sit, come, stay, leave it ect. So that they are 1) well behaved and 2) it stimulates their minds and makes them less likely to be destructive when they are mentally stimulated.
The interaction also develops the bond between owner and dog. They don't hate the part where they get rewarded either! Treats and affection. Your #2 reason is also very important for working and hunting breeds. They go nuts if they don't have something to do for too long.
my whippet passed away a few months ago, I love watching videos of young healthy whippets living great lives to reminisce on the times he was still here. I've watched multiple of your whippet videos and snoot and snelly are so adorable. thank you for uploading!
Snoot is gorgeous. I lost my little whippet girl in an accident last week, so watching this made me appreciate and remember all the little quirks she had. Thank you.
My dog used to have separation anxiety when we left the house. I read somewhere that you should not make coming and going a big deal, because this increases separation anxiety. So, when we come home, we don't pet her or talk to her a lot until we're settled down and she's settled down. I might calmly say hello, but that's it. No physical contact. When she's settled down, then we can pet her and love on her, which is also a reward for being calm. When we leave, we don't say goodbye and we don't make eye contact. We just walk out calmly. After a few weeks of doing this, she stopped showing signs of separation anxiety. It was hard to train ourselves to do this at first, because we always want to love on her. We'd sometimes say "bye!" and then see that anxious look in her eye and realize we messed up. We set a camera up and saw that she doesn't wait by the door for hours anymore when we leave, she just goes to lay in her bed or she sometimes plays with toys. When we come home, she's also calm now and doesn't jump all over us. She will lay on the couch and watch us calmly until we're ready to pet her.
This got recommended to me and I have a 4 year old Whippet named Roger. It’s like watching a video of him, you’re right - his best trick IS sleeping! Haha
I have a runt whippet/chihuahua mix and he makes short snort noises (similar to what you would think a pig sounds like), and one of the things that I label him as (doggy, baby, etc.) is "snort". Your "Snoot" is so cute (even rhymes with it!)!
It's so crazy how similar whippets can be to each other! My whippet has such similar characteristics. Also love what you said about how you think it's a bit weird when dogs are overtrained. I agree, I find it odd when dogs are just robotically obeying commands and after having a sighthound I can really appreciate the independence of a breed!

I often think how would I had survived my childhood if it hadn’t been for him. He knew when I was sad and would always come comfort me. My mom had him before I was born and he loved to be 17 years old. When he died I was devastated. Most all dogs give unconditional love but Whippets seem to be kindred spirits. I’m in my 40’s now and still think of him often.
